Renault Trafic 3(X82) — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

★★★★★
2.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

Since 2014 the Renault Trafic III has been built at Sandouville alongside its identical siblings, the Opel Vivaro B, the Nissan NV300 and - after two facelifts - the Nissan Primastar. As a Combi with up to nine seats in L1 and L2 lengths, plus the Grand Combi, it is one of Europe's most-produced van platforms, which keeps parts supply healthy but also means every shared weakness sits in a huge number of vehicles.

Engine-wise, the Trafic III started with the 1.6-litre dCi (R9M) in single- or twin-turbo form, from 66 to 107 kW - a robust unit familiar from the Megane and Espace. With the first facelift in 2019, the 2.0-litre dCi (M9R) arrived from 120 hp upward, while the base 95 hp variant stayed on the 1.6. Since the second facelift in 2022 the 2.0-litre is officially called Blue dCi, using AdBlue aftertreatment to meet Euro 6d from 110 to 170 hp. Both engine families already have their own weakness listings in the database and are generally considered solid as long as oil-change intervals are kept and the EGR/DPF aren't clogged by pure short-trip use.

The range's sore point is the gearbox: the EDC dual-clutch available from 2019 is widely cited by trade press and workshop reports as the most-debated weak point - especially in delivery and short-trip use with lots of starting, the dry clutch visibly ages faster. Since 2025 a new ZF 9-speed torque-converter automatic has replaced the EDC on the top engines; it's structurally more robust but has no long-term used-market track record yet. Buyers who want certainty should pick the plain manual gearbox - its clutch is also a wear item under commercial use (workshop sources cite around 160,000 km as a typical replacement point), but without the added risk of the mechatronic unit.

The TÜV Report for commercial vehicles gives the Trafic a below-average result with a 26.3 percent defect rate at five to six years - the main causes are steering joints, axle suspension, brakes and rear lighting, all wear items typical of heavily loaded commercial daily use. On top of that comes a long list of KBA recalls across every model year, from the parking brake through suspension fasteners to several waves of airbag and seatbelt issues. Checking the recall history via the VIN is always worthwhile before buying.

On the body side, an occasionally sticking tailgate lock and water ingress through door and sliding-door seals are known issues - both repairable, but good reason for a thorough test drive in the rain. Anyone using the Trafic as a family or club minibus should also know that, per the owner's manual, children under 36 kg may not sit in the third row - a point rarely mentioned when buying used.

Overall, the Trafic III is an honest, well-equipped van with well-documented, known weaknesses. Fully serviced examples with a manual gearbox or the new torque-converter automatic are recommended; for EDC-equipped vehicles, a test drive with both a cold and a warm gearbox pays off.

Engine Overview

The Renault Trafic 3 is available with 12 engine variants — from 90 to 170 hp. 2 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.

Trafic Combi Blue dCi 110 · Diesel· 110 PS
2022 2026

2.0-litre diesel developed jointly with Nissan with timing chain and good fundamental long-term robustness — with correct maintenance well over 300,000 km is possible. Weak point is the turbocharger boost pressure control on early examples (2005–2006). Timing chain can start to rattle from 200,000 km; oil quality is critical.

  • !! Injector Removal Causes Cylinder Head Damage from 150,000 km

On the M9R the valve cover also serves as the camshaft bearing — both parts are machined together. A damaged valve cover during injector removal will inevitably destroy the cylinder head as well.

Symptoms: Damage occurs during improper repair; no prior warning
    1,500–5,000 $
  • !! Coolant Loss / Seal Damage from 180,000 km

Faulty seals or cracks in the M9R engine block can lead to coolant loss. Overheating threatens if the problem is not detected early — especially at higher mileages.

Symptoms: Falling coolant level, overheating warning, white smoke from exhaust
    800–3,000 $
  • !! Timing chain stretch from 200,000 km

The 2.0 dCi uses a timing chain that stretches at high mileage and wears the sprockets. If the chain jumps, valve damage follows. Replacement usually requires removing the engine and is correspondingly costly.

Symptoms: Rattle on cold start from the front timing chain area that fades once warm

2014 2019

Modern 1.6-litre common-rail diesel with timing chain, powerful torque in the bi-turbo version — constructively complex and repair-intensive when damaged. Timing chain frequently elongates from 140,000–150,000 km; piezo injectors, EGR valve and DPF are known trouble sources. On short trips the particulate filter sooths up quickly. Only buy with complete service history and after engine inspection; short oil change intervals noticeably extend timing chain life.

  • !! Timing Chain Stretch from 145,000 km

The R9M timing chain sometimes stretches from as early as 140,000–150,000 km, despite a stated 250,000 km service life. Chain failure leads to valve contact and total engine damage — a costly risk.

Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start, engine warning light, harsh engine noise
    800–3,500 $
  • !! Connecting Rod Failure (Condensation Water) from 80,000 km

The R9M 452 repeatedly suffers connecting rod failures attributed to condensation water ingested from the intercooler. Short oil change intervals and frequent short trips increase the risk.

Symptoms: Loud knock from the engine, sudden engine stop, oil pressure loss
    4,000–15,000 $
  • !! EGR Cooler Crack / Coolant Loss from 100,000 km
