Fiat Ulysse 507 — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The Fiat Ulysse II (Type 507) launched in Germany in March 2022 – exclusively as the E-Ulysse. Unlike its platform siblings SpaceTourer, Traveller, Zafira Life and Proace Verso, which offered a diesel from the start, the Ulysse was electric-only in Germany for over three years. A diesel engine only arrived with the August 2025 facelift: the 2.0 BlueHDi 180 with 130 kW/177 PS and an 8-speed automatic, replaced from May 2026 by a 2.2-litre Multijet with 132 kW/180 PS, whose peak torque now arrives from 1,500 rpm instead of 2,000 – a swap that trade forums attribute mainly to CO2 reduction.

The E-Ulysse uses a 100 kW motor (136 PS) that delivers only 57 kW continuous power – modest figures for a van weighing close to three tonnes, and not ones that promise driving fun. Two battery sizes are offered: 50 kWh gross (46.3 kWh net, roughly 231 km WLTP range) and 75 kWh gross (69 kWh net, up to 329 km). In everyday use, testers report under 200 km for the smaller battery and under 300 km for the larger one without a charging stop, and a DC fast charge to 80 percent takes around 45 minutes. Fiat backs the high-voltage battery with an eight-year/160,000 km warranty guaranteeing at least 70 percent residual capacity.

A known issue concerns the fitted Mahle onboard charger (CAOBC1), a documented weak point across several Stellantis EV models: if it fails, AC charging at a home wallbox or public charge point is no longer possible, while DC fast charging usually keeps working. Owner reports mention multi-week delays for replacement parts, so checking the charging history and test-charging at a wallbox is worthwhile before buying a used unit. On top of that come several recall series: a chafing fuel line, an A/C compressor fault that can shut down the drivetrain, a faulty high-voltage cable with elevated fire risk, non-compliant emissions diagnostic parameters, inadequate seat anchoring, and deviations in the speed display and driver assistance systems. It is always worth checking the KBA recall database by chassis number before buying.

For used buyers: any unit registered before autumn 2025 will necessarily be an E-Ulysse, since diesel models simply are not yet available on the German used market. The E-Ulysse suits predictable short and medium trips with the family or shuttle duty rather than spontaneous long-distance driving. Buyers wanting more range buffer should specifically look for the 75 kWh version. The upcoming diesel versions should appeal more to high-mileage drivers and towing use, but remain years away on the used market.

Engine Overview

The Fiat Ulysse 507 is available with 3 engine variants — from 136 to 180 hp.

Ulysse 2.0 BlueHDi 180 · Diesel· 177 PS
2025 2026

Powerful PSA diesel (2.0L HDi, 100-133 kW) for mid-size cars and SUVs. Common-rail with turbo, later versions as BlueHDi with SCR catalyst and AdBlue. Fundamentally robust and long-lasting with high torque. Injectors and the turbocharger are the main wear items. Timing belt with water pump should be replaced at least every 160,000 km. DPF regeneration becomes problematic with short-trip driving patterns.

  • !! Timing belt snap caused by defective water pump from 90,000 km

The plastic impeller of the water pump can disintegrate from as early as 50,000 km. Fragments enter the timing belt drive and cause the belt to snap with subsequent total engine destruction.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises unusually, coolant loss without visible leak, faint grinding or squealing from the timing belt drive, sudden engine shutdown when belt snaps
    600–900 $
  • !! Dual-mass flywheel wear from 130,000 km

The dual-mass flywheel wears prematurely, especially on the 107 hp variant. Oil dilution from DPF regeneration accelerates wear. The clutch should always be renewed at the same time.

Symptoms: Squealing or clattering when starting and stopping the engine, pronounced vibrations at idle, juddering when pulling away, knocking at low revs under load
    1,000–1,800 $
  • !! Leaking injectors causing oil dilution from 140,000 km

Leaking injectors allow diesel into the engine oil, drastically reducing its lubricity. The rising oil level is often overlooked. This can cause piston and bearing damage.

Symptoms: Diesel smell at the dipstick, oil level rises above maximum, strong exhaust smell inside the car, engine judders or knocks more than usual, increased fuel consumption
    400–1,500 $

Ulysse 2.2 Diesel 180 · Diesel· 180 PS
2026 2026

The 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel comes from a newly developed, group-wide engine family that Stellantis first introduced in a large van model from 2021 and has since gradually rolled out to further commercial-vehicle lines. Exhaust aftertreatment with an AdBlue/SCR catalyst, particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation is designed for the current Euro 6e-bis standard and is correspondingly complex. Early experience reports from the motorhome and van segment with the closely related engine mention frequent particulate-filter regenerations under predominantly short-trip use, occasional AdBlue sensor malfunctions, and noticeable fuel dilution of the engine oil caused by the active regeneration cycles. The camshaft is driven by a timing belt whose replacement interval should be strictly observed. The engine is still young in the market, and solid long-term experience specific to this application is not yet available – checking the digital service book is worthwhile when buying used.

  • !! Fuel dilution of engine oil from active regeneration

On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, one owner documented a diesel content of 4.4% (plus 0.3% biodiesel) in the engine oil after just 4,700 km. The cause is unusually short particulate-filter regeneration intervals of around 230 km instead of the usual 400–500 km, during which extra fuel enters the oil.

Symptoms: White exhaust smoke on cold start, knocking noises under load, noticeable power loss on acceleration, gummed-up oil filler neck, conspicuously frequent DPF regenerations.
    0–0 $
  • !! Particulate filter clogging under short-trip use

On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, the diesel particulate filter is particularly affected under predominantly short-distance driving: regeneration cycles fail to complete, and the filter clogs up, eventually requiring cleaning or replacement.

Symptoms: Particulate filter warning light, prompts for a regeneration drive, loss of power, increased fuel consumption, possible limp mode if the filter is severely clogged.
    500–2,500 $
  • ! EGR valve carbon buildup

On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, soot deposits on the exhaust gas recirculation valve cause it to become blocked. The valve then sticks in one position, affecting engine running and emissions.

Symptoms: Rough idling, fluctuating idle speed, loss of power, check-engine light with an EGR-related fault code.

E-Ulysse · Electric· 136 PS
2022 2026

First PSA electric motor (100 kW) on the CMP platform with a 50 kWh battery (340-362 km WLTP). DC fast charging up to 100 kW. The Mahle OBC (onboard charger) from model years 2019-2022 is the most well-known weakness — three revisions failed to fix it, only the switch to the VMAX OBC from mid-2022 resolved the issue. The 12V battery drains during extended periods of standing. The heat pump compressor is the most expensive single repair. Software updates are frequently required.

  • !! BMS software: drive loss while driving from 20,000 km

Faulty BMS software configuration can cause the electric motor to cut out suddenly while driving. Recall MDY affected 21,345 vehicles (4,632 in Germany) from build year 2022.

Symptoms: Motor suddenly cuts out while driving, drive lost, no prior warning
    0–0 $
  • !! Heat pump compressor corrodes and fails from 40,000 km

The moisture trap in the heat pump refrigerant circuit is undersized and allows moisture through to the compressor. This causes corrosion and compressor failure. Peugeot acknowledged the problem in Japan and replaced compressors; in Europe customers bear the cost (approx. 1,400–3,300 Euro).

Symptoms: Heating fails in winter or works inefficiently, 'electric drivetrain system fault' warning, A/C compressor noise, comfort loss in cold below -5°C
    1,400–2,500 $
  • !! Mahle on-board charger (OBC) failed from 50,000 km

The fitted Mahle CAOBC1 on-board charger is known for charging failures. AC charging drops out, wallbox charging no longer possible. Repair costs approx. 2,500–3,500 €. Successor VMAX OBC is more reliable.

Symptoms: AC charging no longer works, charging session aborts immediately, charging system fault message
    2,500–5,000 $

Recall: fuel line can chafe and develop a leak (2022)

On vehicles built in 2022, the fuel line can chafe against a component and start leaking. Escaping fuel raises fire and accident risk; affected vehicles must go to the workshop for a free repair.

Low
Recall: faulty A/C compressor can shut down the drivetrain (2021–2022)

On vehicles fitted with air conditioning, an A/C compressor fault can in the worst case shut down the entire drivetrain – the vehicle then fails to start or suddenly loses power while driving. Model years 2021 and 2022 are affected; the fix is a control-unit software update.

Symptoms: Sudden loss of power or stalling while driving, plus starting problems, can indicate the fault.
Low
Recall: faulty high-voltage cable raises fire risk (2022)

An incorrectly routed or damaged high-voltage cable in the drivetrain can lead to an elevated fire risk on vehicles built in 2022. Affected E-Ulysse units must go to the workshop for a free repair.

Low
Recall: inadequate seat anchoring (2024)

On a 2024 production batch, individual seats are not securely enough attached to the body structure. In a crash this creates an elevated injury risk for the occupants affected.

Low
Recall: incorrect emissions diagnostic parameters (IUPR) out of compliance (2021–2022)

Incorrectly stored parameters mean the onboard diagnostics (IUPR – In-Use Performance Ratio) fail to meet legal requirements for monitoring emissions control. There is no direct safety risk; affected vehicles receive a software update.

Low
Recall: speed display and driver assistance systems out of compliance (2024–2025)

On vehicles built in 2024 and 2025, the speed display and certain driver assistance systems deviate from legal requirements. A workshop software update fixes the issue; there is no immediate accident risk.
