Ford Tourneo Custom NXN — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

2.3 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The second generation of the Tourneo Custom (NXN/V710, since summer 2023) is built in cooperation with Volkswagen on a jointly developed platform and brings significantly more drivetrain variety than its predecessor: the 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel is offered with 136, 150 or 170 hp, with manual or eight-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive on the higher outputs. Since 2024, a 2.5-liter Duratec plug-in hybrid with 233 hp system output and 11.8 kWh net battery capacity has joined the lineup, as has the fully electric E-Tourneo Custom with rear-wheel drive, 218 or 286 hp and 64 kWh usable battery capacity, later expanded with larger batteries and all-wheel-drive variants. Since the second generation has only been on the market since 2023, there is no reliable long-term data yet on classic wear issues such as rust or suspension — the current picture is instead shaped by a notable cluster of recalls, which is not unusual for a newly developed platform but should still be taken seriously when buying used. Most safety-relevant is the recall for cracks in the fuel supply line with fire risk, affecting a significant share of early production, along with a recall for possible brake circuit failure caused by a cable harness clip chafing the brake line. On the plug-in hybrid version, an incorrect speed limiter in pure electric mode was also found, fixed via software update. Further recalls cover a door control module software issue that can affect blind spot assist, power windows and mirror adjustment, plus minor administrative matters like an incorrect emission class on the type plate and a non-compliant fatigue assistant. When buying an early NXN example, checking the recall history via the VIN is therefore particularly important — when in doubt, have a workshop confirm all relevant recall actions have been completed. On the drivetrain side, the 2.0-liter EcoBlue with 170 hp is a good compromise of power and everyday usability, while the plug-in hybrid suits high-mileage drivers with short trips and charging access. The E-Tourneo Custom suits predictable use profiles best, since winter range drops noticeably below WLTP figures. Since reliable long-term data on engine, gearbox and body is still lacking, a particularly thorough test drive including a check of software versions is advisable when buying used. Specifically, a Ford specialist workshop should check via the VIN before purchase whether the recalls for the fuel line, brake circuit and door control module have already been carried out — especially on vehicles from early 2023/2024 production, there is a high chance at least one action is still outstanding. On an E-Tourneo Custom it is also worth checking the charging history via the Ford app to draw conclusions about frequent fast charging and the resulting battery condition, even though reliable long-term cell-aging data is still lacking due to the model's recency.

Engine Overview

The Ford Tourneo Custom NXN is available with 9 engine variants — from 105 to 286 hp.

Tourneo Custom 320 2.0 EcoBlue · Diesel· 136–170 PS
2023 2026

Modern common-rail diesel with quiet, refined combustion and strong pull from low revs. A timing chain saves belt changes. The DPF and AdBlue need enough long-distance use and level checks. NOx sensors can throw faults over time. Efficient and durable as long as servicing and oil quality are right.

  • !! Continental Injector Coating Defect (2019) from 50,000 km

Continental injectors with a faulty internal coating (vehicles built Feb–Sep 2019). The coating delaminates and blocks the injector. Ford service action: free injector replacement (Ford TSB-20-2335). Affected vehicles: Transit, Ranger, Focus, Mondeo, S-Max, Galaxy, Edge.

Symptoms: Hesitation, poor idle, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode
    0–2,000 $
  • !! DPF Clogging from Injector Soot Ingestion from 80,000 km

Faulty injectors generate excessive soot that prematurely clogs the DPF. On the high-output variant (190 hp), soot also blocks the low-pressure filter of the dual EGR system. Repair requires simultaneous replacement of injectors AND DPF (TSB-20-2335). Replacing the DPF alone does not resolve the issue long-term.

Symptoms: Fault codes P2002, P02EC, P02FA, check engine light, power reduction
    500–2,500 $
  • !! VGT Actuator Failure from 140,000 km

The variable turbine geometry actuator on the bi-turbo system fails electrically or mechanically. Often only the electric motor is faulty, but Ford supplies only the complete turbocharger.

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, limp mode, fault codes P0299 or P0045 in ECU.

E-Tourneo Custom 340 BEV · Electric· 218–286 PS
2024 2026

The electric drive unit sits on the rear axle and draws from a lithium-ion battery with nickel-manganese-cobalt cell chemistry. Charging is available either three-phase on AC or via DC fast charging, with the battery fillable from ten to eighty percent in a little over half an hour on a fast charger. Ford grants an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer factory warranty on the high-voltage battery and its associated high-voltage components, covering capacity loss below seventy percent of original storage capacity within that period. Since the drive unit has only been in the field for a short time, there is no reliable long-term data yet on failure patterns in the power electronics or cell assembly. What does stand out so far is winter range noticeably below the rated figures, a trait shared by many electric drivetrains with comparable battery size and not a malfunction in itself.

No known weaknesses documented.

Tourneo Custom 340 2.5 Duratec PHEV · Petrol Plug-in-Hybrid· 233 PS
2024 2026

Plug-in hybrid with an Atkinson-cycle engine, a larger high-voltage battery and a charge port for purely electric everyday trips. The e-machine carries much of the drive, with the combustion engine assisting when needed. Watch clean oil, the coolant loop and battery health — the latter benefits from regular charging. Economical and smooth, mechanically mature and reliable.

  • !! Recall: HV battery fire risk (Samsung SDI)

Manufacturing defect in Samsung SDI battery cells — separator damage causes internal short circuit. 20,558 vehicles recalled. Can cause fire while parked or driving.

Symptoms: "Stop Safely Now" warning, battery thermal venting, smoke, fire risk
    0–0 $
  • !! Battery cell internal short circuit

Damaged separator between cathode and anode in battery cells. If short circuit occurs, battery can thermally vent — vehicle fire. Remedy: software update + potential battery replacement.

Symptoms: Battery warning messages, reduced range, thermal event, smoke from underfloor
    5,000–15,000 $
  • !! Interim: charging limited to 80%

Until recall fix available (Q2 2025), Ford advises limiting charge to 80% SOC and using Auto EV mode only. Reduces fire risk but limits vehicle utility.

Symptoms: Charging capped at 80%, reduced electric range, Auto EV mode only

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
Recall: brake line can chafe on cable harness clip (brake circuit failure)

The brake line can chafe against the cable harness clip, which can cause gradual or sudden loss of a brake circuit. Ford repositions the clip and inspects the brake line for damage.

Symptoms: Longer brake pedal travel, uneven braking, in extreme cases noticeably reduced braking.
Low
Recall: cracks in the fuel supply line (fire hazard)

Cracks in the fuel supply line can cause fuel leaks above hot exhaust aftertreatment components. If leaking fuel ignites on hot parts, there is a fire risk. Over 83,000 vehicles worldwide, around 18,500 in Germany, are affected.

Symptoms: Fuel smell, visible moisture/drips near the fuel line, smoke in extreme cases.
Low
!Recall: unclear passenger airbag deactivation status

The owner's manual inadequately describes how to operate the passenger airbag deactivation, so it can remain unclear whether the airbag is on or off. This raises injury risk when a rearward-facing child seat is used.

Low
!Recall: door control module software fault affects blind spot assist and comfort functions

A communication fault in the door control module can impair the blind spot assist, power windows, mirror adjustment and side turn indicators. Ford fixes the issue with a door control module software update.

Symptoms: Blind spot warning, window regulator or mirror adjustment failing, side indicators not flashing.
Low
!Recall: restricted function of driver assistance systems

KBA recall 23C39 (06/2024), reported by Ford for the Transit Custom (Tourneo Custom is identical): On vehicles built 05/2023–12/2023 assistance systems such as collision warning may work in a restricted way. Fixed by software update.

Symptoms: Assistance systems drop out or do not warn reliably.
Low
!Recall: window anti-pinch force exceeds limit

KBA recall 25C10 (06/2025), reported by Ford for the Transit Custom (Tourneo Custom is identical): When the windows close, the anti-pinch protection can exceed the 100 N limit, increasing injury risk. Affects production 03/2023–03/2025; software update of the window control.

Low
Recall: driver-monitoring fatigue assistant non-compliant

On affected vehicles, the driver monitoring / fatigue assistant does not comply with legal requirements. Ford corrects the deviation as part of the recall.

Low
Recall: incorrect top-speed limiter in pure electric mode (PHEV)

On the 2.5 Duratec plug-in hybrid, the powertrain control unit does not correctly limit top speed in pure electric mode: the display shows 160 km/h, but up to 180 km/h is actually possible, which violates ECE regulations. Ford installs corrected software.

Low
iRecall: incorrect emission class on type plate/CoC

On a very small number of vehicles, the emission class stated on the type plate and/or Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is incorrect. Ford replaces the VIN plate and CoC documents where needed.
