BMW 7er G70
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The BMW 7 Series G70 (from 2022) is a generational leap: first fully electric i7, 31-inch rear entertainment screen, fully automatic doors. Competes with Mercedes EQS, Rolls-Royce Ghost, and Bentley Flying Spur.
Engines: 740i (B58, 375 hp) — proven, no chronic issues. 750e xDrive (489 hp) — plug-in hybrid. i7 xDrive60 (544 hp, 101.7 kWh) — real range 280–310 miles summer, 215–265 miles winter.
Two major recalls: IBS brake system (Continental MK-C2, production through summer 2024) — ABS/DSC can fail. Cockpit wiring fire risk (NHTSA/KBA 16187R, through Dec 2025). Verify BOTH before purchase!
Software and electronics: iDrive 8 teething problems — eSIM dropouts (~30% of vehicles), CarPlay instability, settings resets. Interior door button fails ($600–$2,000, 4-week parts wait). Soft-Close drops out after OTA updates. Comfort Access can drain battery.
Test-drive: IBS recall status verified? Wiring recall completed? eSIM connects on startup? Door button lit and functional? Soft-Close all four doors.
2026 market: 740i from $88,000–$118,000. i7 xDrive60 from $78,000–$108,000 (significant depreciation from $119,300 MSRP).
Insider pick: i7 xDrive60 (2023, production after October 2023) — both recalls should be resolved, eSIM bugs largely fixed, $85,000–$95,000 with under 25,000 miles.

Engine Overview
The BMW 7er G70 is available with 2 engine variants — from 340 to 490 hp.
Closed-deck aluminium block as standard — a feature normally reserved for racing engines. Water-cooled turbo with mechanical wastegate linkage that rattles at cold start — by design, not dangerous. Barely audible at idle; from 3,000 rpm a rich, deep six-cylinder thrust builds linearly to 6,500. The B58 sounds fuller than the S55 from outside — but inside the motorsport aggression is absent. Dual injection (direct + port) reduces intake valve carbon build-up significantly. The PCV membrane in the valve cover is the known weakness: BMW had to extend the warranty to 15 years. Plastic oil filter housing cracks around 100,000 km — coolant mixes into oil, act immediately. Oil changes every 10,000 km; inspect the cooling system from 70,000 km. Tuning: Stage 2 brings 500 hp — the closed deck makes it possible.
- !! Oil filter disintegrates — engine damage risk from 30,000 km
On B58-equipped M140i/M240i the oil filter can disintegrate on first change and distribute filter material through the oil circuit. BMW covers the costs with proven service history.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning, metallic noises, engine damage after oil change - !! Plastic oil filter housing cracks — coolant/oil mixing from 100,000 km
The plastic oil filter housing becomes brittle from heat cycling and cracks — often during oil changes from overtightening the filter cap. Coolant and oil mix; engine damage likely if unnoticed.
Symptoms: Milky oil on the filler cap, coolant loss without visible leak, oil pressure warning, coolant level drops slowly - !! PCV valve / valve cover membrane failed from 80,000 km
The PCV membrane in the integrated valve cover tears or hardens from heat cycles. Crankcase builds positive pressure, oil is forced through seals. BMW extended the warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles.
Symptoms: Whistling or squealing from the engine bay, white or blue smoke, rough idle, oil in the charge pipe or air filter

| Recall — Integrated Brake System IBS signal fault Signal fault in the motor position sensor can deactivate hydraulic brake assist. Approximately 1 million vehicles worldwide. Symptoms: Warning 'Brake system and driving stability', increased pedal effort required, ABS failure. | Low | |
| Wiring harness recall — fire risk during pollen filter change Recall KBA 16187R: a potentially misrouted cockpit wiring harness can be damaged during cabin filter replacement. A short circuit can cause smoke or fire — 337,374 vehicles worldwide affected. | Low |
