VW Taigo 1(CS)

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The VW Taigo has been the crossover coupé in VW lineup since 2021 — essentially a T-Cross with a sloping roof and sportier appearance. Built on the MQB-A0 platform, it shares technology with Polo and T-Cross.

Engine options are exclusively three-cylinder: the 1.0 TSI with 95 or 110 hp. Sufficient for city driving and commuting, you notice the small displacement on highway inclines. The 110 hp with DSG is the most popular combination.

Vehicle weaknesses are typical for current VW small cars: DSG judders when pulling away (especially cold), infotainment freezes sporadically, and paint quality is thin — stone chips on the front are part of daily life. A recall affects the seatbelt warning (faulty software in instrument cluster, model years 2020–2022). LED headlights fog up, VW considers this normal.

Test drive tip: Check DSG for judder at cold start. Restart infotainment and test CarPlay/Android Auto. Inspect front paint for stone chips.

Market 2026: The Taigo positions itself between T-Cross and T-Roc. As a relatively young model, used examples are still in the higher price range.

Insider pick: The 1.0 TSI with 110 hp and DSG — the most sensible combination.

Engine Overview

The VW Taigo 1 is available with one engine variant at 95 hp.

1.0L TSI · Petrol· 95–115 PS
2021 2024

EA211 Evo 1.0 TSI three-cylinder with 115 hp — a lot of engine for one liter displacement. Oil-bathed timing belt is the structural Achilles heel: quality oil and changes every 15,000 km instead of longlife. Camshaft adjuster screws can loosen (TPI 2038019/4). Wastegate rattling at cold start mostly cosmetic. GPF clogs with short-distance-only driving. Plastic water pump can leak from medium mileage. Unusually small engine for the Touran, but surprisingly adequate in daily use.

  • !! Recall: Vacuum Line Check Valve Defective

DKRA 1.0 TSI 110 hp model years 2019–2020: defective check valve can draw oil into the brake booster and impair brake assist.

Symptoms: Harder brake pedal feel, longer braking distance, brake pedal without servo assistance
    0–300 $
  • !! Camshaft Adjuster — Loose Bolts, Timing Belt Snap from 60,000 km

Camshaft sprocket bolts can work loose and block or snap the timing belt, causing engine damage through valve-piston contact. VW has shown no willingness for goodwill.

Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start, sudden engine shutdown, no restart after timing belt snap
    500–8,000 $
  • !! Wet Timing Belt Running in Oil Bath from 90,000 km

Like all EA211 TSI variants, the DKJA timing belt runs in an oil bath. Strict adherence to oil change intervals is mandatory. Early replacement recommended with short-trip use.

    Symptoms: Rattling, MIL, rough idle
    400–900 $
