Dacia Duster 3

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

The Duster III is the third generation of Dacia's best-seller and moves the brand noticeably closer to Renault in technical terms. Built on the modern CMF-B platform, it introduces electrified drivetrains for the first time while staying true to its role as an affordable compact SUV with honest practicality. Anyone after rugged ground clearance, boxy styling and a fair price is in the right place — just don't expect premium materials or sound insulation.

There are two paths on the engine side. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo (HR12) with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system is the more sensible everyday choice: punchy enough, economical and technically straightforward. It comes recommended, but it needs attention on the timing chain, which is prone to premature stretch — regular oil changes with the correct specification are mandatory. The 1.6-litre full hybrid (H4M with two electric machines) is wonderfully quiet and frugal around town and is essentially the proven naturally aspirated engine, but it carries more complex peripherals. This is exactly where the Duster III's critical issues lie: the E-Tech transmission has been subject to recalls, including one for a possible loss of drive, plus reports of jerking under hard braking and a gearbox that can unexpectedly jump into neutral when coming to a stop.

Regardless of the engine, a few things deserve a look before buying. There are recalls for an ABS wiring harness rubbing on the tyre and a loose connector under the dashboard — check that these actions have been carried out. The roof rails were sometimes loose from the factory, and starting problems caused by control-unit synchronisation as well as intermittent multimedia and radio failures do occur. Notable for such a young car is the strong corrosion of the rear brake discs, which appears early on low-mileage examples.

Bottom line, the Duster III is a genuinely sensible buy as long as you view the electrified technology soberly. For maximum peace of mind, the mild-hybrid petrol is the calmer option. If you want the full hybrid, insist on completed recalls and favour a car with a complete service history. As a cheap, practical SUV it delivers — but you are buying a budget car with Renault genes, not a premium product, and you should factor in the typical teething troubles of the first model years.

Engine Overview

The Dacia Duster 3 is available with 2 engine variants — from 130 to 140 hp.

1.2L Turbo Mild Hybrid · Petrol Mild-Hybrid· 125–130 PS
2024 2026

A turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, delivering strong, economical performance and noticeably easing the combustion engine's load when pulling away. Being a younger design, the timing chain is prone to premature stretching, which announces itself by rattling on a cold start and should be checked early — consistent oil care to the correct specification is the best protection here. Recalls exist for this engine family: one concerns a wiring connection between the engine bay and cabin, another the parking brake not engaging reliably. Before purchase it should be confirmed that both recall actions have been completed. The warmed-up turbo benefits from a brief cool-down before shutting off.

  • !! Recall 0EFZ: engine/cabin wiring connection

Faulty wiring harness can cause airbag malfunction and loss of drive. 27,641 Duster III vehicles affected worldwide (MY 2023–2024), 4,402 vehicles in Germany.

Symptoms: Faulty wiring harness can cause airbag malfunction and loss of drive
  • !! Recall: electric parking brake does not engage reliably

Position sensor of the electric parking brake actuator mounted at the wrong angle. Parking brake does not engage correctly. 137 vehicles affected (MY 03/2024–02/2025).

Symptoms: Position sensor of the electric parking brake actuator mounted at the wrong angle
  • !! Premature timing chain stretch from 90,000 km

The turbo TCe units frequently struggle with the timing chain: poor chain material plus long oil-change intervals let the chain stretch from 60,000 to 80,000 km. If it skips, catastrophic engine damage follows.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rough running and later power loss; in the final stage the chain jumps.
    1,200–2,500 $
1.6L Hybrid · Petrol Hybrid· 140 PS
2024 2026

A full-hybrid drivetrain combining a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine with two electric machines, running largely on electric power and economically in city traffic. The combustion side is the proven, long-lived sixteen-valve base; the weak points lie in the complex hybrid transaxle. A leaking oil seal between the electric motor and the gearbox can cause oil loss and should be investigated early if moisture traces appear. When coming to a stop the unit can jerk or unintentionally slip into neutral — software updates are decisive here to smooth the interplay of regenerative and friction braking. A recall addresses a risk of drive-power loss and must be completed. Kept in good order, an efficient but maintenance-sensitive drivetrain.

  • !! Oil seal e-motor/gearbox faulty from 60,000 km

The shaft seal between the electric motor and the multi-mode gearbox can wear prematurely. Gearbox oil enters the electric motor — gearbox failure without warning is possible. Renault service action OTS 0ET1 / campaign 0E2M.

Symptoms: Shaft seal between electric motor and multi-mode gearbox can wear prematurely
    2,000–13,000 $
  • !! Gearbox drops into neutral when stopping from 28,500 km

Sporadically the gearbox jumps from D or B into N with a strong jolt. Mechanical clunking is audible; a restart is required. Occurs from around 7,500 km.

Symptoms: Sporadically the gearbox jumps from D or B into N with a strong jolt
    200–800 $
  • !! Recall 0E2M: loss of drive risk E-Tech

330,000 E-Tech vehicles recalled. The O-ring between electric motor and gearbox can fail; faulty diagnostic software then triggers limp mode and loss of drive.

    Symptoms: 330,000 vehicles recalled

Recall: ABS wiring harness chafes on tyre sidewall

KBA recall 15066R: on 4×4 models with manual gearbox (TL8) produced 19.06.–03.09.2024, the rear ABS wiring harness may chafe against the tyre sidewall and cause ABS/ESP failure. Approx. 1,250 vehicles affected in Germany.

Symptoms: ABS and ESP warning lights, possible failure of both systems, damage to rear wiring harness visible
Low
Recall: loose connector under dashboard

KBA recall 14486R (code 0EFZ): the R107 connector under the dashboard may come loose. Consequences: loss of drive, power steering failure, airbag deactivation and electric parking brake failure. 27,641 vehicles affected worldwide (produced 20.06.2023–11.07.2024).

Symptoms: Loss of drive while moving, power steering fails, airbag warning light, parking brake non-functional
