Citroën C3 Aircross 2(C) — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The third-generation C3 Aircross (from autumn 2024) rides on the Stellantis Smart Car platform, shared with the Citroën C3 IV, the Opel Frontera and the Fiat Grande Panda. The engine lineup spans the simple 1.2-litre Turbo 100 petrol (74 kW/101 hp) with manual gearbox, through the mild-hybrid Hybrid 136 and Hybrid 145 steps (100/107 kW) with e-DCS6 dual-clutch transmission, to the fully electric ë-C3 Aircross with 83 kW and a choice of 44 or 54 kWh net battery capacity (LFP chemistry, 8-year/160,000 km warranty down to 70% capacity). In a head-to-head test against the Dacia Duster, the Turbo 100 won thanks to shorter braking distances, better material quality and a pleasantly tuned chassis — a genuinely positive surprise for this price class. The three-cylinder is audible under load but keeps a low, tolerable frequency. The mild-hybrid variants reveal the technical downside: the e-DCS6 dual-clutch transmission shows clutch wear with noticeable shift faults in some vehicles from around 56,000 km, and the hybrid control software occasionally causes jerks when the combustion engine automatically restarts. On top of that come several recalls from the early build run: two waves addressing a speed-limit warning that failed to display correctly (ISA), a recall for a possible fire risk from a wiring harness routed too close to the 48V starter-generator on mild-hybrid models, and a very narrowly scoped recall for solder residue in the inverter on vehicles from a two-day production window in March 2026. When buying used, it is worth checking the service history to confirm all recalls were completed. The electric version impresses with a firmer-than-expected chassis and efficient consumption, but at 113 hp it is tight on power for brisk motorway overtaking, and without active battery preconditioning, winter range drops noticeably below the WLTP figure. As a used buy, the manual Turbo 100 is the mechanically simplest and therefore most robust choice; anyone wanting more comfort and an automatic should specifically listen for shift behaviour and clutch noise on a Hybrid 136/145 during the test drive. For pure city and commuting use, the electric version with the larger 54 kWh battery is the more practical pick over the 44 kWh version.

Engine Overview
The Citroën C3 Aircross 2 is available with 4 engine variants — from 101 to 145 hp.
Stellantis electric motor (83 kW peak power) with a 44 kWh LFP battery on the Smart Car platform. Up to 320 km WLTP range, an affordable entry into electric mobility. No heat pump as standard — considerable range loss in winter must be factored in. DC charging up to 100 kW. Simple technology without frills, though the infotainment software is not yet fully mature. 12V battery should be checked regularly for low-mileage drivers.
- !! Range — display overestimates real-world range
The ë-C3 achieves 200–250 km in real-world use instead of the brochure's 320 km. The missing heat pump significantly increases energy demand from the main battery in winter.
Symptoms: Range display fluctuates significantly in cold weather, actual range well below stated figure. - !! Heavy range loss in winter
The ë-Berlingo and ë-C4 with 83 kW motor and no active battery heating lose up to 40% range in winter. The missing heat pump amplifies the effect as the heater draws directly from the battery.
Symptoms: Displayed range drops to 160–180 km in winter instead of 280 km (rated), heavy consumption increase to over 20 kWh/100 km at temperatures below 0°C. - !! 12V starter battery drains during standby
In the ë-Berlingo (e-CMP platform) the 12V auxiliary battery discharges during extended standby because control units do not switch off. The vehicle is often no longer driveable after 6+ weeks of inactivity. The high-voltage system only charges the 12V battery when actively driving.
Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after extended standby, all warnings active, charging not possible as charge flap is not released. Immediately functional again after jump-start with booster cable.

48V mild-hybrid version of the latest PureTech generation: a 1.2 three-cylinder turbo with a timing chain — per trade press, the EB2LTED/EB2LTEDH2 engine codes consistently denote the chain design, no longer the predecessors' wet belt. The 21 kW e-motor sits in the electrified six-speed dual-clutch gearbox (e-DCS6); the 48V battery holds 0.9 kWh. Known early-production items: a recall for a mispositioned camshaft-phaser bolt (until February 2024), the multi-brand high-pressure fuel line recall and the 48V starter-generator fire-safety recall, plus first-batch software glitches and occasional DCS6 control-unit failures on young cars. Long-term chain data is still missing.
- !! Camshaft Phaser Bolt Incorrectly Positioned (Recall)
On vehicles produced between 2023 and 17 Feb. 2024, the camshaft phaser bolt is incorrectly positioned, which can cause power loss, engine warning light and engine damage.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, rough running, abnormal noises - !! DCS6 Gearbox Control Unit Failed
The new 6-speed DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox in the 600 Hybrid shows control unit failures in early production years. Vehicles were sometimes undriveable after 470 km.
Symptoms: Error message 'Engine faulty', sudden power loss, vehicle won't start - !! Recall 15351R — High-Pressure Fuel Lines
Official KBA recall (ref. 15351R): high-pressure fuel lines may not be tightened correctly — fuel leakage with fire risk possible.
Symptoms: Fuel smell in engine bay, visible leakage at injection line

Latest PureTech generation of the 1.2 three-cylinder turbo — per trade press, the engine codes EB2LTED/EB2LTEDH2 consistently denote the chain-driven design replacing the predecessors' troublesome wet belt; parts catalogues accordingly list timing chain kits. 205 Nm from 1,750 rpm, direct injection, particulate filter. Early Gen3 production batches (until February 2024) were recalled for a mispositioned camshaft-phaser bolt. Long-term experience with the new chain is still pending — oil quality and intervals remain crucial.
- !! Recall: fuel rail connections not tightened correctly (KBA 15353R/KUU et al.)
On 1.2 turbo models built 10/2022 to 05/2025 the connections between high-pressure line and fuel rail were not tightened to spec. Fuel can leak and ignite on hot components; 11 fires had been reported by 17 June 2025.
Symptoms: Petrol smell in the engine bay, fuel traces at rail or high-pressure line; in the worst case smoke or fire under the bonnet. Usually no warning — check recall status by VIN.
Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Severely above-average axle spring and damper wear Axle springs and dampers show up to twelve times the average rejection rate at the first MOT on the C3 Aircross. This is the most striking weak point of the vehicle. Symptoms: Knocking or rumbling over bumps, bodywork bouncing after braking, car sitting lower on one side from 50,000 km | Low |
