The EC40 is the name used since February 2024 for the former C40 Recharge – as part of renaming its electric lineup, Volvo simply swapped the badge; technically the EC40 is virtually identical to the C40: same CMA platform, same body with the distinctive coupe roof, same motors and batteries. Checking the history of a used EC40 will often still turn up invoices, paperwork or forum posts referencing the old C40 Recharge name.
What is new from model year 2025 is the drivetrain lineup: the entry point remains the rear-drive variants with 175 kW (67 kWh) and 185 kW in Extended Range guise (79 kWh), plus the 300 kW all-wheel-drive version. New in spring 2024 was a Performance version with 325 kW, unlocked purely via software and adding 25 kW over the regular Twin Motor – chassis and brakes are unchanged, it is purely a numbers upgrade.
The biggest change compared with the C40 is software: with the largest over-the-air update in company history, Volvo switched the user interface to Google Automotive, which largely fixed the previously reported dropouts in internet connectivity, navigation and traffic-sign recognition. A few new minor display glitches did appear in the process, such as a missing map view in the driver display when reversing.
The C40's known weak points – limited all-round visibility from the thick C-pillars, tight rear headroom for taller passengers, the high-opening tailgate, and winter range sitting clearly below the WLTP figure – apply unchanged to the EC40 as well, since body, battery and heat pump remain the same. For a used EC40, the same checklist as for the C40 applies, plus a look at the current software version.
Engine Overview
The Volvo EC40 1 is available with 4 engine variants — from 238 to 442 hp. 1 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.
Permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the front axle, fed by a front power inverter and a 78 kWh NMC pack (CMA platform, shared with Polestar 2 and C40). The motor and single-speed reduction gear themselves are robust and low-wear. The weak point is the high-voltage control side: the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) can reset and disconnect the HV system, causing sudden loss of drive power — the subject of recall R10078. Separately, the front inverter shows up as a hardware failure ('Propulsion System Service Required'). The biggest everyday nuisance is the 12 V battery, which repeatedly drains due to a software-related parasitic load. Mechanically low-maintenance, but verify software and module levels before buying.

Both motors and reduction gears are robust with almost no mechanical wear.
