Toyota Proace Verso 1(K0) — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Toyota Proace Verso is a passenger van registered as a car, technically identical to the Citroën SpaceTourer, Peugeot Traveller and Opel Zafira Life (Stellantis K0/EMP2 platform, built at Hordain). On sale since September 2016, a fully electric version arrived in 2021, a facelift followed in April 2024, and since autumn/winter 2025 a newly developed 2.2-litre diesel rounds off the range at the top. Buying a used Proace Verso essentially means buying a PSA/Stellantis van wearing a Toyota badge – engines, chassis and electrics come from the Citroën/Peugeot/Opel commercial-vehicle shelf, only body details and interior are Toyota-specific.
The diesel range is wide: the 1.6-litre (85 kW/116 hp, only 2016-2018) and the 1.5-litre (88 kW/120 hp) feel noticeably underpowered when the eight-seater is fully loaded, and suit short trips and city use better. The 2.0-litre D-4D (106 to 130 kW, 144 to 177 hp) is the all-rounder with decent pull, available with 6-speed manual or automatic (initially 6-speed, from around 2019/2020 an 8-speed EAT8 automatic). From the 2024 facelift until autumn 2025 it was the only option, before being replaced by the new 2.2-litre diesel (110/132 kW, 150/180 hp), also fitted across the group in the Jumpy, Scudo, Vivaro and Expert. There is no reliable long-term experience yet for this brand-new engine – with such a young used car, check the warranty transfer carefully. On the older PSA diesels, the AdBlue system, timing chain or belt, and EGR/DPF under mostly short-trip use are the known wear points.
The Proace Verso Electric (from 2021, 100 kW/136 hp, continuous output 62 kW) comes with a 50 kWh or 75 kWh battery, both offered from the start. Real-world range sits between roughly 160 and 250 km, and performance is deliberately mild: 130 km/h top speed, 13.3 seconds to 100 km/h. In return it gets a battery warranty generous for the class: eight years or 160,000 km at a minimum of 70 percent remaining capacity.
Recalls have been plentiful – from fastener and lock defects in the early years, through timing-belt and engine damage, to chassis corrosion (model years 2016-2022, by far the widest recall date range) and several drivetrain-failure actions reaching into 2026. When buying used, check the KBA recall history via the chassis number, since not every recall was reliably carried out. Everyday issues known from forums include an occasionally misaligned sliding-door latch that no longer catches, a heater valve that weakens rear heating when the auxiliary heater also runs, and an 8-speed automatic that shifts roughly for the first minutes in cold weather.
Through its Relax warranty, Toyota grants a 24-month extension per annual dealer inspection instead of the usual 12, up to a maximum of 15 years or 250,000 km – a real advantage over its identical PSA siblings. As a buying recommendation, the proven 2.0-litre D-4D with 130 kW stands out: strong enough for daily use, with the longest production run and thus the most known experience in the range.

Stay Away!Engine Overview
The Toyota Proace Verso 1 is available with 7 engine variants — from 116 to 180 hp.
Modern PSA diesel (1.5L BlueHDi) with common-rail, SCR catalyst, and AdBlue. Fuel-efficient and torquey, but the camshaft chain (only 7 mm wide) is the biggest weak point — Stellantis extended the warranty to 10 years/240,000 km. Always check whether the 8 mm chain update has been performed. The AdBlue system and DPF are prone to issues with short-trip driving. The high-pressure fuel pump can seize from fuel contamination.
- !! Premature timing chain wear — subject to recall from 80,000 km
The only 7 mm wide timing chain stretches prematurely and can snap. Oil dilution from short-trip use accelerates the problem. Stellantis has initiated a mega recall covering 141,700 vehicles in Germany.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start, engine management light, rough engine running, in the worst case sudden engine shutdown from chain snap while driving - !! High-pressure pump seizes from 40,000 km
The Bosch high-pressure pump on the DV5 can seize, particularly on vehicles with fewer than 50,000 km. Metal swarf enters the fuel system and requires replacement of the entire injection system.
Symptoms: Engine no longer starts or stalls while driving, engine management light, metallic noise from engine bay, power loss shortly before total failure - !! Timing chain recall — warranty extension
Stellantis has extended the warranty to 10 years / 240,000 km (since July 2025). A software update increases oil pressure and a special oil change is performed. Chain replacement free of charge if required.
Symptoms: Affected vehicles receive a recall notification. Workshop performs diagnosis, checks chain stretch via camshaft/crankshaft sensor comparison.
+ 5 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
The most common PSA diesel (1.6L HDi, 68-85 kW), evolving through many stages from Euro 4 to Euro 6. THE defining problem is the turbocharger: the oil feed line clogs with soot particles and kills the TD025/GT1544V turbo — sometimes as early as 50,000 km. Injector seals, EGR carbon buildup, and DPF issues on short trips are additional trouble spots. With regular oil changes and highway driving, it remains a frugal, long-lasting engine.
- !! Turbocharger total failure from oil sludge from 100,000 km
The 1.6 HDi is notorious for repeated turbocharger failures. Soot particles in the oil alter viscosity, oil lines coke up and the turbocharger runs dry. A second failure after replacement without addressing the root cause is common.
Symptoms: Whistling from the turbocharger, severe power loss, blue or black exhaust smoke, oil leaking from turbo, engine enters limp mode - !! Leaking injectors with diesel in the engine oil from 120,000 km
The copper sealing rings on the injectors wear out, allowing combustion gases and diesel to enter the cylinder head. Oil dilution by diesel can lead to engine damage. Affects all 1.6 HDi variants.
Symptoms: Diesel smell at the dipstick, rising oil level, black deposits around injectors, rough engine running, hissing noises at the cylinder head with engine running - !! Premature camshaft and chain wear from 130,000 km
The cam-to-cam timing chain between inlet and exhaust camshafts can stretch or snap. Hydraulic chain tensioners fail, causing valve timing shift and in extreme cases engine damage.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rough engine running, engine management light, power loss, in extreme cases sudden engine shutdown from chain snap
+ 5 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
Powerful PSA diesel (2.0L HDi, 100-133 kW) for mid-size cars and SUVs. Common-rail with turbo, later versions as BlueHDi with SCR catalyst and AdBlue. Fundamentally robust and long-lasting with high torque. Injectors and the turbocharger are the main wear items. Timing belt with water pump should be replaced at least every 160,000 km. DPF regeneration becomes problematic with short-trip driving patterns.
- !! Timing belt snap caused by defective water pump from 90,000 km
The plastic impeller of the water pump can disintegrate from as early as 50,000 km. Fragments enter the timing belt drive and cause the belt to snap with subsequent total engine destruction.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises unusually, coolant loss without visible leak, faint grinding or squealing from the timing belt drive, sudden engine shutdown when belt snaps - !! Dual-mass flywheel wear from 130,000 km
The dual-mass flywheel wears prematurely, especially on the 107 hp variant. Oil dilution from DPF regeneration accelerates wear. The clutch should always be renewed at the same time.
Symptoms: Squealing or clattering when starting and stopping the engine, pronounced vibrations at idle, juddering when pulling away, knocking at low revs under load - !! Leaking injectors causing oil dilution from 140,000 km
Leaking injectors allow diesel into the engine oil, drastically reducing its lubricity. The rising oil level is often overlooked. This can cause piston and bearing damage.
Symptoms: Diesel smell at the dipstick, oil level rises above maximum, strong exhaust smell inside the car, engine judders or knocks more than usual, increased fuel consumption
+ 6 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
The 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel comes from a newly developed, group-wide engine family that Stellantis first introduced in a large van model from 2021 and has since gradually rolled out to further commercial-vehicle lines. Exhaust aftertreatment with an AdBlue/SCR catalyst, particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation is designed for the current Euro 6e-bis standard and is correspondingly complex. Early experience reports from the motorhome and van segment with the closely related engine mention frequent particulate-filter regenerations under predominantly short-trip use, occasional AdBlue sensor malfunctions, and noticeable fuel dilution of the engine oil caused by the active regeneration cycles. The camshaft is driven by a timing belt whose replacement interval should be strictly observed. The engine is still young in the market, and solid long-term experience specific to this application is not yet available – checking the digital service book is worthwhile when buying used.
- !! Fuel dilution of engine oil from active regeneration
On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, one owner documented a diesel content of 4.4% (plus 0.3% biodiesel) in the engine oil after just 4,700 km. The cause is unusually short particulate-filter regeneration intervals of around 230 km instead of the usual 400–500 km, during which extra fuel enters the oil.
Symptoms: White exhaust smoke on cold start, knocking noises under load, noticeable power loss on acceleration, gummed-up oil filler neck, conspicuously frequent DPF regenerations. - !! Particulate filter clogging under short-trip use
On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, the diesel particulate filter is particularly affected under predominantly short-distance driving: regeneration cycles fail to complete, and the filter clogs up, eventually requiring cleaning or replacement.
Symptoms: Particulate filter warning light, prompts for a regeneration drive, loss of power, increased fuel consumption, possible limp mode if the filter is severely clogged. - ! EGR valve carbon buildup
On the closely related Ducato version of this engine, soot deposits on the exhaust gas recirculation valve cause it to become blocked. The valve then sticks in one position, affecting engine running and emissions.
Symptoms: Rough idling, fluctuating idle speed, loss of power, check-engine light with an EGR-related fault code.

First PSA electric motor (100 kW) on the CMP platform with a 50 kWh battery (340-362 km WLTP). DC fast charging up to 100 kW. The Mahle OBC (onboard charger) from model years 2019-2022 is the most well-known weakness — three revisions failed to fix it, only the switch to the VMAX OBC from mid-2022 resolved the issue. The 12V battery drains during extended periods of standing. The heat pump compressor is the most expensive single repair. Software updates are frequently required.
- !! BMS software: drive loss while driving from 20,000 km
Faulty BMS software configuration can cause the electric motor to cut out suddenly while driving. Recall MDY affected 21,345 vehicles (4,632 in Germany) from build year 2022.
Symptoms: Motor suddenly cuts out while driving, drive lost, no prior warning - !! Heat pump compressor corrodes and fails from 40,000 km
The moisture trap in the heat pump refrigerant circuit is undersized and allows moisture through to the compressor. This causes corrosion and compressor failure. Peugeot acknowledged the problem in Japan and replaced compressors; in Europe customers bear the cost (approx. 1,400–3,300 Euro).
Symptoms: Heating fails in winter or works inefficiently, 'electric drivetrain system fault' warning, A/C compressor noise, comfort loss in cold below -5°C - !! Mahle on-board charger (OBC) failed from 50,000 km
The fitted Mahle CAOBC1 on-board charger is known for charging failures. AC charging drops out, wallbox charging no longer possible. Repair costs approx. 2,500–3,500 €. Successor VMAX OBC is more reliable.
Symptoms: AC charging no longer works, charging session aborts immediately, charging system fault message
