Mercedes-Benz Vito W447 — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

★★★★★
2.7 / 5.0 · Based on 6 engine variants · How we rate

The Vito Tourer W447 has been Mercedes' mid-size van people-mover since October 2014 and shares most of its technology with the V-Class. It went through three phases: the original version (2014–2019) with a 1.6-litre front-wheel-drive diesel (109/111 CDI, OM622 based on the R9M from the Franco-Japanese partnership) and the well-known 2.0-litre rear-drive OM651 (114–119 CDI); the first facelift (2019–2024) with a larger 1.7-litre front-drive diesel (110/114 CDI) and the newer OM654 diesel for rear/all-wheel drive (114–124 CDI); and the second facelift (from 2024) carrying over the same OM654 diesel line-up plus, for the first time, a petrol engine: the mild-hybrid four-cylinder M254 (Vito Tourer 124, 170 kW/231 PS). Because of its history as a taxi and shuttle vehicle, the used market often has examples with very high mileage – the robust basic concept generally tolerates this well, but makes a thorough history check all the more important. On the front-drive diesels, pay special attention to the cold start: rattling in the first few seconds points to a stretched timing chain, while on the larger 1.7-litre it more likely signals an emerging cooling issue with head-gasket risk. On the well-known rear-drive diesels OM651 and OM654, timing chain recalls, EGR fouling on short trips, and the emissions after-treatment system remain the established check points. On the transmission side, the 7G-Tronic (up to 2019) is worth checking for limp-mode symptoms in its shift behaviour, while the newer 9G-Tronic occasionally shows jerky shifts in low gears – often fixable with a software update. As a commercial-based van, the Vito carries a long recall list ranging from brake system components through steering parts to seat and headrest manufacturing defects; check the VIN against the KBA recall database before buying. Other recurring themes include wear on the powered sliding doors, an electrical system vulnerable to fault cascades when the starter battery ages (up to 50 networked control units), AdBlue system faults in cold weather or with diluted additive, and – on vehicles with air suspension – leaking air spring bellows and continuously running compressors. Buying advice: for everyday use the 114 or 116 CDI is usually sufficient, while the 119 or 124 CDI pays off if the vehicle regularly carries a full complement of passengers. The base 109/110 CDI front-drive versions are designed for light, short-distance duty and quickly reach their limits with a full load of people. Before buying: check the vehicle history (taxi/commercial use?), recall status, the condition of the sliding doors and, depending on engine, cold-start behaviour and coolant level.

Engine Overview

The Mercedes-Benz Vito W447 is available with 9 engine variants — from 88 to 237 hp. 6 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.

Vito Tourer 109 CDI · Diesel· 88 PS
2014 2019

Compact four-cylinder diesel with an aluminium block and transverse layout, derived from a Franco-Japanese engine partnership and built under licence. The timing chain stretches over the service life – the first tell-tale sign is a metallic rattle for a few seconds after a cold start, before oil pressure builds up. The intake manifold swirl flaps tend to gum up with carbon and stick, showing up as a rough idle and hesitation under partial load. Injectors are sensitive to water in the fuel, and the EGR valve fouls up comparatively fast under short-trip use. Oil seepage is common at the valve cover, timing chain cover and oil filter housing. Short oil-change intervals and regular longer drives noticeably extend the life of this relatively small-displacement unit compared with the factory service schedule.

  • !! Timing chain stretches over the vehicle's life from 145,000 km

The timing chain can start stretching from around 140,000 to 150,000 kilometres. Wear on the sprockets, hydraulic tensioner and plastic guide rails accelerates with extended oil-change intervals and low oil level.

Symptoms: Metallic rattle for a few seconds after cold start, which disappears once oil pressure builds up.
    1,200–2,800 $
  • !! Recall: illegal defeat device in the emissions control system

The engine control software was officially recalled to remove an illegal defeat device, i.e. an unlawful reduction in the effectiveness of the emissions control system.

    0–0 $
  • !! Turbocharger wear from short-trip driving

Frequent short trips and switching off immediately after longer drives significantly shorten turbocharger life, because oil supply is interrupted while the unit is still hot.

Symptoms: Power loss and a whistling noise under acceleration.
    1,200–2,800 $

Vito Tourer 110 CDI · Diesel· 102 PS
2019 2024

A further-developed, larger-displacement version of the small four-cylinder diesel from the same Franco-Japanese partnership. The timing chain is considered notably more durable than on the smaller predecessor and, in workshop experience, often lasts beyond 200,000 kilometres, though it should still be checked if cold-start rattling appears. The real weak point is the cooling system: a tendency to overheat can damage the cylinder head gasket, signalled by coolant loss and white exhaust smoke – coolant level should therefore be checked regularly. Under predominantly short-trip use, the particulate filter and EGR valve clog up faster, which can trigger limp mode and higher fuel consumption. Because this engine family had a comparatively short production run, some spare parts are harder to source than for more established units.

  • !! Tendency to overheat with cylinder head gasket risk

The engine tends to overheat when the cooling system is weak, which has repeatedly caused cylinder head gasket failures. Regular checking of the coolant level is recommended.

Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white exhaust smoke, temperature rising at idle.
    0–0 $
  • ! Particulate filter and EGR valve clog on short trips

With predominantly urban driving and frequent short trips, the particulate filter and EGR valve clog up faster than with regular longer-distance use.

Symptoms: Limp mode, higher fuel consumption, more frequent regeneration drives needed.

Vito Tourer 114 CDI · Diesel· 136 PS Engine Change
2014 2019

Most widespread Mercedes four-cylinder diesel, aluminium block with steel liners. Simplex timing chain sits at the rear of the gearbox and stretches from 120,000 km — chain tensioner recall covered 100,000+ vehicles in Germany (February–November 2014 production). Engine was part of the Mercedes emissions scandal: illegal thermal window defeat device; recall software in some vehicles actually worsened NOx values. Piezo injectors in the 250 CDI were never updated — remains an ongoing risk. Well-maintained examples with solenoid injectors and short oil-change intervals can reach 400,000 km.

  • !! Chain Tensioner Seal Leaking — Recall

Over 100,000 vehicles recalled: the chain tensioner seal leaks, allowing engine oil to drip onto the exhaust system and potentially ignite.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, oil smell from engine bay, oily deposits under the vehicle, possible oil fire
    0–300 $
  • !! Timing Chain Stretch (Simplex Chain) from 150,000 km

The OM651 uses a simplex timing chain. With short-trip driving and overdue oil change intervals the chain stretches.

Symptoms: Light rattling noise on cold start from the rear of the engine, no fault code stored
    1,200–3,000 $
  • !! Piezo Injector Faults from 80,000 km

Same Delphi piezo injector problems as in the DE18: 220 CDI and 250 CDI variants affected. Mercedes replaced them with solenoid injectors as part of a service action.

Symptoms: Vibrations and rough running especially under acceleration, elevated fuel consumption
    1,500–3,500 $

2019 2026

Completely new aluminium diesel with NANOSLIDE coating and integrated particulate filter. Initially marketed as the future of diesel, but significant issues have emerged: rocker arms and camshafts wear prematurely (TSB GI05.30-P-070181); Mercedes improved the parts from engine serial number 80278367 (October 2018). Major recalls include the timing chain recall and coolant pump recall (fire risk, ~800,000 vehicles affected). Also implicated in emissions scandal via illegal thermal window defeat device (LG Stuttgart 2020). Shorten oil change intervals to max 15,000 km — extended intervals accelerate rocker arm wear.

  • !! Rocker Arm and Camshaft Wear from 80,000 km

Known weak point: the narrow camshaft lobes and rocker arms in the OM654 wear prematurely due to inadequate lubrication. Mercedes issued TSBs.

Symptoms: Ticking or knocking from engine bay, misfires, rough running, engine warning light
    2,000–5,000 $
  • !! Electric Coolant Pump Leaking — Recall

Over 800,000 Mercedes diesel vehicles with OM654/OM656 were recalled due to a leaking electric coolant pump. Coolant loss can lead to overheating.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, coolant warning light, engine temperature rises
    0–500 $
  • !! NOx Sensor Defective — AdBlue Fault and Start Inhibit from 90,000 km

NOx sensors wear out from soot particles and deliver erroneous readings. Consequence: incorrect AdBlue injection, CEL illumination; if unaddressed, an engine start inhibit may follow. Both sensors can be affected.

Symptoms: CEL, AdBlue warning, fault code P20EE or P204F, message 'No start after X km', rough idle
    500–2,000 $

e-Vito Tourer · Electric· 204 PS
2020 2026

The electric drivetrain sits entirely on the front axle and combines an asynchronous motor with the associated power electronics into a compact drive unit. Charging runs three-phase at up to eleven kilowatts AC; DC fast chargers allow up to 80 or 110 kilowatts depending on battery size. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery has its own coolant circuit for thermal management. A factory-fitted cap on the coolant expansion tank cannot always reliably release the overpressure that builds up under thermal load, triggering recurring but harmless warnings about an allegedly low coolant level — a Mercedes-approved replacement cap fixes this. The drive unit itself generally runs smoothly and with strong pull; in documented individual cases, however, failed control-unit software updates led to complete replacement of the power electronics. Real-world range drops noticeably below the official figure, especially with the cabin heater running and in low outside temperatures.

  • !! Drive unit failure after control-unit software update

In documented individual cases, the drive unit combining the electric motor and power electronics failed completely after a failed software update to the power-electronics control unit (A79/3) and had to be replaced.

Symptoms: Vehicle loses propulsion after a botched dealer software update, drive-system warning light, downtime of several weeks to months reported due to parts availability.

  • !! Stuck HV contactor forces full battery replacement from 286,000 km

One documented case shows a stuck high-voltage contactor inside the battery at around 286,000 km; because the contactor is fixed inside the battery housing, Mercedes officially only offers replacement of the entire HV battery for about €33,770.

Symptoms: Vehicle fails to start after charging, red 12V battery warning light, diagnostics show 'HV contactor stuck'.
    33,770–33,770 $
  • !! DC fast charging aborts seconds after starting

In one documented case, charging at several CCS fast chargers from different operators started, briefly showed a time estimate, then aborted immediately, while AC wallbox charging kept working without issue.

Symptoms: DC fast-charging session starts, shows a remaining-time estimate for about a second, then aborts; Type 2 charging at home works normally.

2024 2026

Current four-cylinder turbo with 48V mild-hybrid and integrated starter-generator (ISG). Early W206 series (2021–mid-2023) show elevated oil consumption due to insufficient piston ring specification — Mercedes accepts up to 0.5 L/1,000 km as "normal", customer acceptance is low. PCV valve integrated in valve cover, complex replacement from around 50,000 km. 48V ISG few issues so far but still young. Electric water pump identified as cooling system weak point. Oil changes every 10,000 km strongly recommended.

  • !! Oil Consumption from Piston Rings (Early Production) from 50,000 km

Early M254 production batches 2021–2023 show elevated oil consumption due to insufficient piston ring sealing. Mercedes repair involves engine reconditioning.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level between services, bluish smoke on cold start, consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km
    2,500–6,000 $
  • !! Timing Chain — Rattle and Premature Wear from 120,000 km

The M254 exhibits timing chain rattle at cold start when oil change intervals are missed. Chain tensioner sealing rings can leak and lose tension. Engine damage is possible.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering from the engine bay at cold start, disappears after warm-up, worsens with extended service intervals
    1,500–4,500 $
  • !! Exhaust Valves Defective — Cylinder Head Damage from 60,000 km

Defective exhaust valves and guides in the M254 lead to misfires and cylinder head damage. Mercedes USA extended the warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles; no official recall in Germany.

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, severe misfires, CEL flashing, rough engine, dangerous misfires at motorway speed
    5,500–13,000 $
