Mercedes-Benz V-Klasse W447 — Problems & Common Faults

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

★★★★★
2.3 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The Mercedes V-Class W447 launched in May 2014 as a premium van on the shared Vito/Viano platform and remains in production today (as of 2026, now on its third facelift from 2024). In this first phase up to February 2019, the only engine was the 2.1-litre four-cylinder OM651 diesel, sold as V 200 CDI/d (100 kW/136 hp), V 220 CDI/d (120 kW/163 hp) and V 250 BlueTEC/d (140 kW/190 hp), initially with a manual gearbox or 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic; 4MATIC all-wheel drive arrived from January 2015, at first only for the 250, with the 220 d and 200 d following during 2015. The OM651 is Mercedes' most widely used four-cylinder diesel, robust at its core but with known weak points: a large recall covered the timing chain tensioner mount (production Feb–Nov 2014), and the engine was also part of the Mercedes emissions scandal over an illegal thermal-window shutoff. When buying used, check the service history for completed recalls and regular oil changes.

Typical van weak points show up independently of the engine: the electric sliding door uses a cable-drive mechanism whose plastic gears, pulley, and cable wear out over time, causing jamming or rattling – repair kits and workshop replacement range from roughly 60 to over 1,000 euros depending on scope. The electronic steering lock (ELV) suffers from carbon-brush wear in its actuator motor and can sporadically refuse to start the engine or fail to switch it off after the key is removed – the Marco Polo camper, based on the V-Class, is affected too. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission control occasionally causes jerky shifts, limp-home mode, or gears that won't engage. Numerous KBA recalls concern safety: corroding roof frame reinforcement, an insufficiently grounded steering column with clock spring cassette, power steering assist failure from faulty control-unit welds, auxiliary heater exhaust entering the cabin, headrests and seat consoles coming loose, and leaking brake lines. For high-mileage or short-trip use – common with commercial prior owners – check the AdBlue/particulate filter system, since incomplete regenerations can cause dosing valve and sensor problems. Vehicles with optional rear air suspension deserve a look at compressor runtime and air springs.

From autumn 2019, the new OM654 diesel (V 220 d, V 250 d, V 300 d) replaced the OM651, bringing a 9G-TRONIC automatic and a revised COMAND system, but its own issues such as rocker arm/camshaft wear and a coolant pump recall. The 2024 facelift finally brought MBUX, a larger grille, and a mild-hybrid petrol engine. For a used-car purchase from this first phase (2014–2019), a well-maintained V 220 d or V 250 d with 7G-TRONIC, a complete recall history, a checked sliding door drive, and a usage profile that isn't purely short trips is the recommended choice.

Engine Overview

The Mercedes-Benz V-Klasse W447 is available with 6 engine variants — from 136 to 239 hp.

V 200 CDI/d · Diesel· 136 PS
2014 2019

Most widespread Mercedes four-cylinder diesel, aluminium block with steel liners. Simplex timing chain sits at the rear of the gearbox and stretches from 120,000 km — chain tensioner recall covered 100,000+ vehicles in Germany (February–November 2014 production). Engine was part of the Mercedes emissions scandal: illegal thermal window defeat device; recall software in some vehicles actually worsened NOx values. Piezo injectors in the 250 CDI were never updated — remains an ongoing risk. Well-maintained examples with solenoid injectors and short oil-change intervals can reach 400,000 km.

  • !! Chain Tensioner Seal Leaking — Recall

Over 100,000 vehicles recalled: the chain tensioner seal leaks, allowing engine oil to drip onto the exhaust system and potentially ignite.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, oil smell from engine bay, oily deposits under the vehicle, possible oil fire
    0–300 $
  • !! Timing Chain Stretch (Simplex Chain) from 150,000 km

The OM651 uses a simplex timing chain. With short-trip driving and overdue oil change intervals the chain stretches.

Symptoms: Light rattling noise on cold start from the rear of the engine, no fault code stored
    1,200–3,000 $
  • !! Piezo Injector Faults from 80,000 km

Same Delphi piezo injector problems as in the DE18: 220 CDI and 250 CDI variants affected. Mercedes replaced them with solenoid injectors as part of a service action.

Symptoms: Vibrations and rough running especially under acceleration, elevated fuel consumption
    1,500–3,500 $

V 300 · Petrol Mild-Hybrid· 231 PS
2024 2026

Current four-cylinder turbo with 48V mild-hybrid and integrated starter-generator (ISG). Early W206 series (2021–mid-2023) show elevated oil consumption due to insufficient piston ring specification — Mercedes accepts up to 0.5 L/1,000 km as "normal", customer acceptance is low. PCV valve integrated in valve cover, complex replacement from around 50,000 km. 48V ISG few issues so far but still young. Electric water pump identified as cooling system weak point. Oil changes every 10,000 km strongly recommended.

  • !! Oil Consumption from Piston Rings (Early Production) from 50,000 km

Early M254 production batches 2021–2023 show elevated oil consumption due to insufficient piston ring sealing. Mercedes repair involves engine reconditioning.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level between services, bluish smoke on cold start, consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km
    2,500–6,000 $
  • !! Timing Chain — Rattle and Premature Wear from 120,000 km

The M254 exhibits timing chain rattle at cold start when oil change intervals are missed. Chain tensioner sealing rings can leak and lose tension. Engine damage is possible.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering from the engine bay at cold start, disappears after warm-up, worsens with extended service intervals
    1,500–4,500 $
  • !! Exhaust Valves Defective — Cylinder Head Damage from 60,000 km

Defective exhaust valves and guides in the M254 lead to misfires and cylinder head damage. Mercedes USA extended the warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles; no official recall in Germany.

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, severe misfires, CEL flashing, rough engine, dangerous misfires at motorway speed
    5,500–13,000 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
✖Corrosion of the roof frame reinforcement

KBA recall: corrosion can develop on the roof frame reinforcement and its connecting elements in the roof bed area, weakening structural strength and posing a safety risk under roof load or in a crash.

Low
✖Insufficiently grounded steering column (airbag risk)

KBA recall: insufficient grounding of the steering column combined with damaged conductor tracks in the clock spring cassette can cause unintended deployment of the driver airbag.

Low
✖Electric power steering (EPS) assist failure

KBA recalls (incl. VS2EPSLENK, VS2LENKEPS, VS2SCHRALU): improperly welded pins in the steering control unit, a faulty sensor, or corroded bolted connections can cause the power steering assist to fail.

Symptoms: The steering wheel suddenly becomes heavy, power assist cuts out spontaneously.
Low
✖Auxiliary hot-air heater exhaust entering the cabin

KBA recall: when the auxiliary hot-air heater is used, exhaust gases can enter the passenger cabin instead of being fully vented outside.

Symptoms: Exhaust smell inside the cabin while the auxiliary heater is running.
Low
✖Electric sliding door does not lock securely

KBA recall: a faulty electrical connection between the sliding door and B-pillar can allow the door, which appears locked, to be opened from outside in a crash.

Symptoms: Sliding door appears locked but can still be opened from outside unexpectedly.
Low
✖Brake fluid loss due to unsuitable brake line

KBA recall (VS2BREMVAR): unsuitable brake lines can leak brake fluid, extending stopping distance and creating a fire risk. Separate recalls also affected the brake fluid reservoir and brake line specification in other production years.

Symptoms: Visible brake fluid loss, softer brake pedal feel, extended stopping distance.
Low
✖Recall: wheel bearing circlips not correctly pressed

KBA recall VS2SIRIRAD (3392086, 11/2017): Incorrectly pressed circlips on the wheel bearing could lead to wheel loss. Affects a small number of 2017-built vehicles; bearings are inspected and replaced if necessary.

Low
✖Recall: brake fluid reservoir incorrectly installed

KBA recall VS20BREMBE (06/2016): An incorrectly installed brake fluid reservoir can lead to a loss of braking force. Affects vehicles built 2013–2016; the reservoir seating is checked and corrected.

Low
✖Recall: seat swivel wiring may trigger thorax airbag

KBA recall VS2DREHSIT (12/2017): Unsuitable cable routing around the seat swivel bases can trigger the thorax airbags unintentionally. Affects vehicles with swivelling front seats built 2014–2017; the wiring is rerouted.

Low
✖Recall: faulty door locks and handles on the right side

KBA recalls VS2TUERGRI (04/2018) and VS2TUERSCH (11/2018): Missing door handle components or a wrong actuating lever in the door locks can cause doors on the right-hand side to open in a side impact. Affects 2018-built vehicles; locks and handles are replaced.

Low
✖Recall: passenger airbag flap/splinters

When the passenger airbag deploys, the airbag flap or splinter parts can injure occupants. Affects vehicles from 2019 production.

Low
✖Recall: engine oil level not sensor-monitored

The engine oil fill level may not be reliably monitored by sensors. This can lead to uncontrolled acceleration of the vehicle caused by combustion of engine oil.
