Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Wrangler JL replaced the JK in 2018 and kept the core recipe: ladder frame, solid axles, removable doors and roof. At the same time it became more modern, with better materials, more infotainment and a quieter ride. None of that changes the character much: it remains a compromise-heavy cult off-roader that sacrifices comfort and precision on the road but is almost unmatched off it. Resale value is correspondingly strong.
Three drivetrains are on offer. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 is the proven standard engine with good pull but familiar weaknesses: a rocker-arm tick (class action), a leaking oil cooler housing, oil filter adapter gasket, water pump and timing chain tensioner. The 2.0-litre GME-T4 turbo with 48-volt mild hybrid makes around 270 hp, is noticeably more economical and stronger in the mid range, but it is technically more complex, with issues such as a rattling wastegate, elevated oil consumption, coolant leaking into the oil and turbo bearing wear. The 4xe plug-in hybrid combines the turbo with a battery and two electric motors for 375 hp, but weighs roughly 350 kilograms more, which is felt off-road. The 4xe had serious early problems, including a recall for high-voltage battery fire risk on more than 32,000 vehicles, power inverter module failures and an electric mode that would not work in the cold.
On the vehicle itself, the Death Wobble remains a factor in the JL generation too, so worn suspension parts must be taken seriously. Beyond that come weld-seam leaks with water ingress, start-stop system malfunctions, air-conditioning refrigerant leaks, a recall for an overheating and cracking clutch pressure plate, a recall for frame weld-seam defects and the familiar oil cooler leak on the Pentastar. An electronic sway-bar disconnect can fail after driving through water.
When buying, the recall history is decisive; on the 4xe in particular the battery recall must be demonstrably completed. Check the service history, test the front end for play, and inspect the cabin and footwells for moisture. On the 2.0 turbo keep an eye on oil level and coolant, and listen for the Pentastar tick. A test drive over rough roads shows whether the front axle runs stable.
The bottom line: the JL is the better everyday Wrangler without losing its roots. The Pentastar is the most straightforward choice, the 2.0 turbo the more economical compromise. The 4xe is only worth it with every recall fully completed, otherwise its fire-risk history becomes a liability. Anyone who accepts the Wrangler compromises gets a characterful, off-road-capable vehicle that holds its value well.

The Jeep Wrangler JL is available with 3 engine variants — from 273 to 380 hp.
A modern 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo with 48-volt mild hybrid from the Stellantis parts bin, around 270 hp and noticeably more economical than the old V6. Direct injection and a twin-scroll turbo deliver strong pull, but long-term data is still limited. An early issue is a coolant leak at a hose fitting, which in the worst case lets coolant into the oil. Add a rattling wastegate at low revs, raised oil consumption, and with mileage intake-valve coking from the direct injection plus turbo bearing wear. Premium fuel and short oil-change intervals are advisable here.
