The C40 Recharge is Volvo's first fully electric model and the brand's first coupe-SUV: at its core an XC40 with a sloping roof, sharing its battery, electronics and both electric motors with the mechanically identical XC40 Recharge and the Polestar 2. Buying a used C40 means buying a mature CMA electric platform with a few quirks that come from the coupe roofline. From February 2024 the C40 continued under the name EC40, technically virtually unchanged, while the equally CMA-based XC40 Recharge became the EX40 at the same time - same drivetrains, a different, boxier body without the coupe's drawbacks.
The C40 was offered with five drivetrain variants: the cheapest entry point was the 170 kW front-wheel-drive with a 67 kWh battery (03/22-12/22), followed by the 300 kW all-wheel-drive version with 75 kWh, and from 05/23 with 79 kWh net capacity. From autumn 2023 Volvo switched the base models to rear-wheel drive: 175 kW with 66 kWh and 185 kW with 79 kWh in Extended Range guise. The motors themselves are considered solid - weaknesses lie less in the drivetrain than in software and body details.
The most notable compromise is the coupe roof: the ADAC test rates the C40's all-round visibility as below average, especially to the rear, because thick C-pillars and the sloping roofline block the view. Rear headroom gets tight for passengers taller than about 1.85 m, and the power tailgate swings up to roughly 2.25 m when opening - a problem in some underground garages.
Software was rough in the early build years: owners report repeated internet, navigation and traffic-sign-recognition dropouts, sometimes only fixed after several dealer visits. A few owners report a complete on-board charger failure that then only charged on a single phase or not at all - repaired under warranty, though parts were occasionally in short supply.
Several safety-relevant recalls apply: a software error in brake assist on 2022/23 build cars, a faulty emergency-call diagnosis, improperly crimped airbag clamps, and a rearview camera that sometimes showed no image in reverse. Checking the recall history via the VIN is worthwhile before buying a used C40.
Realistic winter range sits clearly below the WLTP figure despite the standard heat pump - roughly 439 km on paper often becomes only 220 to 260 km in frost. Anyone using the C40 mostly for short city trips should also brake firmly with the foot pedal occasionally, since strong regenerative braking barely uses the mechanical brakes and encourages surface rust. ADAC rated the Single Motor overall at 1.8 (good) - a mature but not flawless electric car with a few typical first-generation software teething troubles. For a used purchase, check the update history and, on all-wheel-drive cars, test a fast-charging session.
