BMW iX1 U11

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.4 / 5.0 · Based on 5 engine variants · How we rate

The iX1 U11 is BMW's most affordable EV — since 2022 as compact SUV competing with Tesla Model Y and Audi Q4 e-tron.

eDrive20 (150 kW, FWD) as budget entry — up to 510 km WLTP. xDrive30 (230 kW, AWD) for winter.

Weaknesses: Suspension too firm on poor roads (especially 20-inch). No physical buttons. DC charging only 130 kW. IBS brake recall. Drive shaft recall.

Market 2026: eDrive20 new from €48,400, used (2023) from €33,000.

Insider pick: An eDrive20 M Sport with 18-inch wheels — sporty looks, more comfortable ride.

eDrive20 · Electric· 204 PS
2022 2026

Fifth generation BMW electric drive — current-excited synchronous motor without rare earths, high efficiency. Vitesco coolant circuit valves are the most common hardware weakness — a leaking changeover valve disables climate control or fast charging. DC fast charging via CCS occasionally fails completely (CCU defect). Thermal management throttles noticeably during sustained high-speed driving. Multiple recalls address HV software and brake booster (iBoost). Two fire-risk recalls for battery cell manufacturing defects and weld seam issues — have VIN checked at the dealer.

  • !! Faulty switching valve in cooling circuit (Vitesco) from 30,000 km

A Vitesco switching valve (64119462114) in the cooling circuit fails, especially in frost. Coolant runs out before the warning light activates. BMW temporarily imposed a global delivery stop on new i4s.

Symptoms: Coolant puddle under the car; heater fails before warning light illuminates; coolant level warning appears too late.
    500–1,800 $
  • !! Recall: software algorithm shuts down high-voltage system

A software bug in the HV system monitoring triggers a preventive drivetrain shutdown even when no actual hazard exists. Vehicle loses drive within 15–20 seconds. BMW recalled 70,852 vehicles (i4/iX/i5/i7, MY 2022–2025).

Symptoms: Warning 'High-voltage system fault' followed by loss of drive; steering and brake assist remain active; car coasts slowly to a stop.
    0–0 $
  • !! Recall: manufacturing defect in HV battery cells (fire risk)

HV battery cell modules were not manufactured to specification. Module frame can crack, shut down the high-voltage system, or cells can overheat to fire risk. Affected: i4, iX, i7 (production 07.2021–02.2024).

Symptoms: Loss of drive while moving; HV battery warning; in rare cases smoke or fire.

Twin-motor Gen5 drivetrain with AWD — from 230 kW in the xDrive30 up to 485 kW in the M70. More power but also more complexity. Drivetrain vibrations during acceleration and regeneration are a common theme — front motor brush wear creates carbon dust that triggers drive faults. Heat exchanger valves leak more often than on the single-motor variant (two cooling circuits instead of one). iDrive 8 freezes or restarts after OTA updates. The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) can completely block AC charging. Recalls for the brake system (iBoost) and HV battery cells apply — fire risk on certain batches.

  • !! Recall: incorrectly manufactured Combined Charging Unit (CCU)

The high-voltage combined charging unit (CCU) was incorrectly installed in a production batch. A loose component interrupts current flow and can shut down drive while driving. Affected: iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 M50 (June–September 2022).

Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive while moving; intermittent high-voltage fault messages; vehicle won't restart after shutting down.
    0–0 $
  • !! Recall: manufacturing defect in HV battery cells (fire risk)

Manufacturing defect in HV battery cell modules (production 07.2021–02.2024). Frame structure can crack, shut down the high-voltage system, or cells can overheat to the point of fire risk. Affected: i4 M50, iX M60, i7 M70.

Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive; HV battery warning; in extreme cases smoke or fire at the battery.
    0–0 $
  • !! Recall: Drive Software Shuts Down High-Voltage System

Electric motor software misidentifies insulation faults and conservatively shuts down the HV system — sudden loss of drive above 30 km/h possible. NHTSA 25V395, approx. 70,000 vehicles affected. OTA fix available.

Symptoms: Sudden complete loss of drive while driving without warning, vehicle coasts, cockpit warning message

Recall: Integrated Braking System (IBS)

A signal fault in the motor position sensor of the electric brake actuator can deactivate hydraulic brake assistance. ABS and DSC may fail. Affected: production June 2022 to August 2024 (46,967 vehicles in Germany).

Symptoms: Increased brake pedal force required, ABS and DSC fail, warning lights on the dashboard
Low
Recall: Driveshaft detaches

A manufacturing defect at a supplier can cause the driveshaft to detach from the electric drive unit. Affected production: November 2022 to July 2023. Approximately 1,511 vehicles in Germany. BMW replaces driveshafts free of charge.

Symptoms: Red warning message 'Drive fault' in instrument cluster, loss of drive, vehicle coasts to a stop
Low
Recall: Integrated Brake System (IBS)

The iX1 U11 (production from June 2022) is part of the major BMW IBS recall. Faulty brake electronics can deactivate ABS and DSC. BMW replaces the brake system free of charge.

Symptoms: ABS/DSC warning lamp, warning symbols in instrument cluster, increased brake pedal effort required
Low
