The JB74 is the Jimny that became a cult overnight — boxy retro styling, a real ladder frame and solid axles at a time when everyone else had long moved to SUV platforms. The engine: There's only one: the K15B 1.5 petrol with 75 kW, longitudinally mounted, port injection, no turbo. Deliberately simple and robust, easy to service. Torque arrives higher up, but the block is reckoned long-lived. Typical weak spots stay modest: some factory oil consumption, a timing chain that can stretch at high mileage, and ignition coils that age in their hot location and cause misfires. Add a starter battery worn early by the stop-start system, and a thermostat that occasionally sticks. A blind buy — as long as it's been looked after.
Mind the recalls: Check two key campaigns — the fuel pump (campaign 97HA, impeller can fail) and the airbag wiring harness in the door area. Both free, but they must be done.
The whole car: The ladder frame ships with inadequate cavity protection (€200–600 for proper aftermarket sealing) — on a car built for off-road use that's mandatory, or the frame rusts from the inside. Wheel bearings and suspension wear (€150–500), rear brake discs corrode, and the cabin rattles and is loud. The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) occasionally brakes for no reason — shadows, signs or bridges — that's part of its known character. After deep water crossings the alternator and idler pulley can act up (€300–700).
Test drive: On the motorway, accept the hard, bouncy ride — normal for the short wheelbase. Test AEB behaviour, listen for chain rattle cold at high mileage, and check the frame underneath for sealing.
Market 2026: The JB74 holds value extremely well — clean examples sit at €18,000–28,000, with early bargains under €16,000 rare and usually high-mileage. Insider pick: a manual with recalls done and an aftermarket-sealed frame. Few small cars hold value this well.
