Fiat 600e 600
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Fiat 600e (2023–2026) is Stellantis's B-SUV on the e-CMP2 platform — same bones as the Jeep Avenger, Peugeot e-2008, and Opel Mokka Electric. Two variants: a BEV (54 kWh, 156 hp, 100 kW DC) and a Hybrid (1.2T + 48V e-DCT). The BEV is the one to consider; the Hybrid's e-DCT shudders in stop-and-go.
The BEV's numbers: WLTP 409 km, ADAC Ecotest 315 km, highway at 120 km/h ~236 km, winter with heating ~200 km. DC charging peaks at 100 kW but averages 73 kW (10–80% in ~28 min). No battery thermal preconditioning — cold batteries won't hit peak charge rates. Real-world range is genuinely useful for urban/suburban duty but inadequate for regular Autobahn legs without planning.
The platform risk: the Mahle 11 kW onboard charger (OBC) installed across 10+ Stellantis EV models (2019–2024) has a documented failure pattern — gradual loss of three-phase charging, then complete AC charging failure. Cars can only DC charge until repaired. Mahle released three hardware revisions without fully resolving it; Stellantis switched to a VMAX replacement unit. Out-of-warranty OBC replacement: up to $5,500. The 600e isn't explicitly named in published OBC failure reports (those focused on e-208, Mokka-e), but the shared hardware means the risk is structurally present on early builds. Verify production date — post-mid-2024 more likely to have the revised unit.
Other issues: brake pedal feel is poorly calibrated (weak regen, mushy-then-sharp friction transition, no one-pedal driving mode). Uconnect infotainment reboots and CarPlay drops on pre-2024-update cars. 12V auxiliary battery drains on short urban trips — triggers cascading dashboard warnings. Steering is universally criticized as over-light with no feedback.
Test-drive checklist: plug into an 11 kW three-phase station (should accept full 11 kW — drop to 7–8 kW = OBC degradation signal), brake pedal from 50 km/h (consistent or spongy-then-bite?), steering at 80+ km/h for any feedback, Uconnect lag/reboot test, roof/door edge paint inspection (thin factory paint chips early).
2026 market: BEV ~$31,000–40,000 new (Sport trim with heat pump is the value pick). Used 2024 ~$24,000–31,000. Insider pick: 2024+ La Prima or Sport with verified OTA updates — avoid pre-September 2023 early production. If one-pedal driving matters, look at Peugeot e-2008 or MG ZS EV instead — the 600e's regen system is a persistent weakness.
Engine Overview
The Fiat 600e 600 is available with 2 engine variants — from 101 to 156 hp.
PureTech 130 turbo with wet belt issues on early build years. Same engine as EB2DT with higher boost pressure.
- !! Wet belt disintegration — notorious main problem from 60,000 km
Identical wet belt problem as on the EB2DT. The oil-lubricated timing belt breaks down from degraded engine oil, especially during short-trip use and infrequent driving. The higher turbo output (130 hp) additionally stresses the belt. Rubber particles clog the oil pump, VVT valves and lubrication channels. Stellantis recall covered around 500,000 vehicles. Service interval was reduced from 240,000 to 70,000 km. Belt snap results in total engine failure.
Symptoms: Engine management light, power loss, oil pressure warning, sudden engine shutdown, catastrophic engine damage - !! LSPI — low-speed pre-ignition from 80,000 km
Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) occurs at low revs under high load. Oil additive droplets in the combustion chamber ignite uncontrollably before the spark fires. This creates extremely high pressure spikes that can damage pistons and connecting rods. Using the correct engine oil (Stellantis FPW9.55535/03) significantly reduces the risk.
Symptoms: Metallic knocking at low revs under high load, engine management light, in extreme cases piston damage - !! High oil consumption from coked piston rings from 90,000 km
As with the EB2DT the oil control rings tend to coke up. Oil enters the combustion chamber and is burned. The more highly loaded 130 hp engine tends to develop the problem earlier. Some owners report 1 litre per 1,500 km.
Symptoms: Rapidly dropping oil level, blue exhaust smoke, regular topping up required
+ 3 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
Young EV on the Stellantis e-CMP platform — software and driver assistance systems of the first production series not yet fully mature; basic hardware structure solid.
- !! Recall steering gear — steering lock risk
294 Fiat 600 and 600e (model year 2024) were recalled due to a non-specification steering gear. In the worst case the steering can lock.
Symptoms: Heavy or locking steering — no early warning symptoms possible - !! Software bugs at delivery
Freshly delivered 600e models show numerous software bugs: lights not working, driver assistance systems deactivated, cruise control inactive — often caused by an undercharged 12V battery at delivery.
Symptoms: Warning messages at first contact, lights non-functional, lane assist deactivated, display failure - ! App connection and charge status display faulty
The Fiat app shows no current charge level and regularly loses connection to the 600e. Software updates resolve the problem but often introduce new errors.
Symptoms: App shows last charge level without updating, no remote access to climate control
Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall: Steering Rack Does Not Meet Specification Recall of 294 units worldwide for a steering rack not meeting specifications. In the worst case, steering can lock. KBA reference 14305R. Symptoms: Heavy steering, possible steering lock while driving | Low | |
| Recall: Regenerative Braking Software Defective Recall for 4,408 Fiat 600e vehicles due to faulty regenerative braking control software. Regenerative braking does not work correctly, increased energy consumption. Free software update fix. Symptoms: Increased energy consumption, unexpected braking behaviour, regenerative braking force inconsistent | Low |
