Nissan Navara D23-FL

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Navara D23 facelift (2019–2025) is the revised NP300 and the most recent generation of the classic Nissan pickup. Sharpened in looks, retuned in the chassis and fitted with updated emissions tech, it keeps the proven concept: ladder frame, multi-link coil-sprung rear axle in the double cab, selectable low-range four-wheel drive and strong towing capacity. Power still comes from the 2.3-litre YS23DDT diesel with 163 to 190 hp, depending on single- or bi-turbo spec. This makes the D23 facelift the most usable Navara, capable of doubling as a family and leisure vehicle.

Compared with the early D23, work went into ride comfort and noise insulation, and the Euro 6d emissions setup is cleaner. But the engine's core traits remain: the YS23 is a modern common-rail diesel that needs DPF regeneration and therefore longer, hot runs. In pure short-trip use, oil dilution threatens — injected diesel enters the engine oil, the level rises, and in extreme cases lubrication suffers. Drive it as intended on long routes or in genuine working duty and you will rarely have trouble; the pure city pickup is the wrong choice. The EGR and intake also reward regular longer drives.

The facelift still applies the rule: check the ladder frame. The newer model years are still comparatively young and the rust less advanced, but the chassis issue follows the whole Navara family. In salted regions, the closer look from below pays off all the more the older and higher-mileage the vehicle is, especially with commercial use.

Buying advice: As many examples are still fairly new, it is worth checking remaining warranty and a complete service book. Check oil level and smell (diesel in the oil = DPF trouble), read the fault memory and DPF status, and question the usage profile. Inspect underbody and frame for early rust, especially on high-mileage trucks from construction or farming duty. Watch for an even running engine and smoke behaviour, and try the four-wheel drive and low range.

Verdict: The D23 facelift is the most modern and most usable Navara, with the best comfort level of the line. As long as it has been driven as intended on longer routes and the frame is healthy, it is a solid, strong-pulling working partner. The weak spots are known and manageable — what matters most is the previous owner's usage profile and the condition of the underbody.

Engine Overview

The Nissan Navara D23-FL is available with one engine variant at 163 hp.

2.3L · Diesel· 163–190 PS
2019 2025

Modern 2.3-litre bi-turbo diesel with around 160 to 190 hp — sequential charging delivers early response and strong pull across a wide rev band. Technically up to date, yet long-term data is still limited. The particulate filter is prone to clogging even from new and needs regular long runs, while the bi-turbo setup can fail at the primary or secondary stage — check for smooth boost build-up when buying. AdBlue consumption can run higher than expected. A clean service history, consistent regeneration runs and a watchful eye on the exhaust system are decisive here.

  • !! BiTurbo failure (primary or secondary stage) from 150,000 km

The YS23DDT BiTurbo system can fail at high mileage. The small primary turbocharger (responsible for the lower rev range) is particularly vulnerable. Repair is expensive as both stages often need replacement.

Symptoms: Turbo lag in the lower rev range, whistling or howling from turbo, power loss, engine warning light
    1,500–4,000 $
  • !! Oil dilution from DPF regeneration (P253F) from 40,000 km

During DPF regeneration the YS23 injects extra diesel that ends up in the engine oil. On short trips the regen fails, the oil level rises and the oil thins out. Fault code P253F appears every few thousand kilometres. Nissan has no real fix beyond more frequent oil changes.

Symptoms: Rising oil level, diesel smell in the oil, oil quality/dilution warning, fault code P253F, frequent forced regens
    150–1,200 $
  • !! Injector leak-off / internal leakage from 120,000 km

The YS23 common-rail injectors develop internal leakage and fail the leak-off test. Result: hard starting, knocking and rattling especially when cold, poor running. The injector seals also start to weep.

Symptoms: Hard cold start, knocking/rattle when pulling away, white or black smoke, rough running
    400–1,600 $
