The third Colorado (GMT31T0, from 2023) is the radical break: GM ditched the V6 and diesel and now runs a single turbo four across the board. More modern, more angular, more tech onboard — but also more software that can misbehave. In Europe it's almost exclusively fresh import stock.
The engines: There's only the L3B 2.7L turbo I4 in two tunes. The full version (231kW, 310 hp, 542 Nm from 1,500 rpm) feels like a small V8 down low — GM's answer to Ford's EcoBoost. The detuned base L2R (177kW, 237 hp) runs thermally cooler and is projected to last longer. Both share the aluminum block, direct injection and AFM cylinder deactivation. Issues: intake-valve carbon (DI-typical), turbo bearing, elevated oil consumption via piston rings, AFM lifters and timing-chain-tensioner rattle. Note: early units (the engine base ran in the Silverado from 2019-2022) had head-gasket trouble and injector failures (ECM update available), and there's a recall for a cracked block at the oil gallery (N232415060) — verify recall status.
Model years: Too young for real long-term data. What matters is a fully completed recall and software-update history, especially the block recall.
Whole vehicle: The new electronics cause grief: false automatic emergency braking (AEB), dropping blind-spot monitoring, cluster and infotainment blackouts, parasitic battery drain. Mechanically: the 8L80 transmission shifts harshly at times and slips, and the thin rear frame lets the bed bounce under load.
Test drive: Actively exercise all driver-assist systems — false AEB and blind-spot dropouts are real. Watch displays for blackout (including after restart). Test the transmission for harsh shifts and slip. After it sits, check for a dead battery (parasitic drain). Ask the dealer for recall and TSB history.
Market 2026: As a young model, roughly 30,000-45,000 EUR equivalent depending on spec (ZR2 much dearer). A rarity in Europe with an import premium. Insider pick: a 2024/2025 model year with all recalls done and current ECM/infotainment software — the more mature turbo is worth it once the software teething is patched.

Runs AFM cylinder deactivation (cylinders 2 and 3 shut off under light load), which acts up far less than on the V8s but can stick lifters if oil changes are neglected. Head gasket failures on the 2019-2022 early run under 25,000 miles, mostly warranty-covered. Direct injection demands walnut blasting of the intake valves, with the high-pressure pump and injectors being the usual turbo-DI wear items. Short oil-change intervals with Dexos oil are mandatory here; well-kept 2022+ examples run trouble-free.

Early L3B engines (2019-2022) can lose the head gasket as soon as 20,000-40,000 miles. Coolant intrudes into the cylinders, in the worst case pitting the cylinder walls and requiring an engine swap. Usually covered under the powertrain warranty.

The AFM cylinder deactivation shuts off cylinders 2 and 3 under light load. In the deactivated state the lifters can stick or wear with thin or cold oil — far rarer than on the V8s, but documented and part of a class action. GM covers repairs through extended warranties.

Same aluminum block, same direct injection, same AFM cylinder deactivation — just thermally relaxed, which noticeably improves the durability outlook over the 310-hp version (estimates around 150,000 miles versus roughly 110,000). As on the L3B, raised oil consumption can come from piston rings, valve stem seals or a sticking PCV system. Rarer and usually later on the detuned version, but keep an eye on the oil level between changes. Continuous consumption with no visible leak points to internal causes.
