Ford Mustang Mach-E 1
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Mustang Mach-E is Ford's first ground-up electric vehicle – a compact SUV that borrows the Mustang badge, which annoys purists but masks genuinely capable hardware. Decent range, strong performance in the upper trims (GT north of 480 hp), and tidy handling thanks to the low center of gravity. Look past the badge and it's a grown-up EV. The biggest warning: on the potent ER and GT versions the high-voltage battery main contactors can overheat and shut down, causing a sudden loss of motive power while driving. There's a recall for it. Before buying, confirm every recall has been completed. The second major issue is the 12V auxiliary battery: it can drain while the car is charging, leaving the vehicle completely dead – and since the doors open electrically via e-Latch, owners get locked out. Ford issued an e-Latch recall in 2025. When viewing a Mach-E, find it cold and unplugged and confirm it wakes reliably. Software is the next weak spot: Sync 4 freezes, AC charging sessions abort or throw OBC faults, and cold-weather charging is heavily throttled. The charge-port latch can freeze shut in winter. Build quality is typically Ford – uneven panel gaps are documented, plus recalls for panoramic-roof and windscreen bonding and for subframe bolts that weren't torqued. A practical annoyance: the rear brake rotors rust and the calipers seize because regen under-uses the mechanical brakes. On a test drive, watch for pulsing and uneven braking. The BlueCruise driver-assist system drew an NHTSA probe over failure to detect stationary objects. Buying tip: a complete recall history isn't optional here – HV contactors, e-Latch, roof and windscreen bonding, subframe. A car with every campaign closed out, current software, and free-moving rear brakes is a solid EV.

Fun to Drive!Engine Overview
The Ford Mustang Mach-E 1 is available with 5 engine variants — from 125 to 494 hp.
Dual-motor all-wheel drive with the large high-voltage battery — the most powerful, longest-range setup. Each axle has its own permanent-magnet machine, and the inverters apportion torque on demand. Off-the-line punch is fierce. Mechanically very robust; the key concern is battery thermal management under fast charging and full load. Reduction gears and bearings last a long time.
- !! HV Contactors Overheating — Recall 23S56 from 30,000 km
The Mach-E ER AWD is directly affected by Ford Recall 23S56: rapid DC charging and high-performance operation can overheat the HV contactors. 2021–2022 models must be checked for recall status.
Symptoms: HV battery warning light, vehicle has no drive, charging fault - !! Recall: HV Battery Main Contactors (ER AWD)
Main HV battery contactors can overheat during frequent DC fast charging and full-performance use. All ER AWD variants before May 2022 affected; free replacement of the battery switch box.
Symptoms: Powertrain fault warning, power reduction, vehicle will not start after DC charging. - !! HV Battery Main Contactors Overheat — Recall 2022 from 20,000 km
Ford recalled 2021–2022 Mach-E vehicles due to possible overheating of the HV battery main contactors. Repeated DC fast charging or performance driving can deform the contacts. Fix: OTA or dealer software update.
Symptoms: Vehicle suddenly loses drive power while moving; difficulty starting after DC fast charge; warning messages in instrument cluster after multiple hard acceleration runs.

Two e-machines, one per axle, provide permanent all-wheel drive and very precise traction. The smaller high-voltage battery keeps weight in check but trims range. Twin inverters split torque almost instantly. Both reduction gears are sturdy. Keep an eye on coolant level for the battery and power-electronics loop, and check the high-voltage connectors stay clean and tight.
- !! Rear Motor Fault in AWD Operation from 60,000 km
On some Mach-E AWD variants the rear motor malfunctions, causing the vehicle to fall back to FWD mode. Powertrain fault warnings and reduced performance are the symptoms.
Symptoms: Powertrain fault, AWD system inactive, power reduction, vehicle running on front motor only - !! Recall: HV Battery Main Contactors
Main HV battery contactors can overheat from repeated fast charging and full-performance use. Ford recalled all Mach-E vehicles before May 2022; switch box replaced free of charge.
Symptoms: HV battery warning light, reduced drive, vehicle won't start after charging. - !! HV Battery Main Contactors Overheat — Recall 2022 from 20,000 km

Permanent-magnet synchronous machine on the rear axle, fed by a large high-voltage battery. Delivers strong torque from standstill and class-leading range. The single-speed reduction gear needs little maintenance. Watch the battery coolant loop and high-voltage wiring. Regenerative braking spares the friction brakes, so they wear slowly but can seize from corrosion if rarely used.
- !! HV Contactors Overheating — Recall 23S56 from 40,000 km
The Mach-E ER RWD is part of Ford Recall 23S56 for overheating HV contactors during rapid DC charging. 2021–2022 models are particularly affected.
Symptoms: HV battery warning, power reduction, charging fault, vehicle has no drive - !! Recall: HV Battery Main Contactors
Main HV battery contactors can overheat with frequent DC fast charging. All ER models before May 2022 affected; dealer replaces the battery switch box (approx. 5 hours labour).
Symptoms: Powertrain fault warning, sudden power loss, vehicle enters limp mode. - !! HV Battery Main Contactors Overheat — Recall 2022 from 20,000 km
Ford recalled 2021–2022 Mach-E vehicles due to possible overheating of the HV battery main contactors. Repeated DC fast charging or performance driving can deform the contacts. Fix: OTA or dealer software update.

Permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle with inverter and single-speed reduction gear. The drive deploys torque instantly and silently for spontaneous response. The standard range suffices for daily use, and strong regeneration recharges the battery under braking. Thermal management of the high-voltage battery is decisive for longevity and fast-charging behaviour. A low-maintenance, refined electric drive.
- !! HV Contactors Overheat During Rapid Charging from 40,000 km
DC fast charging and frequent full-load driving can overheat the high-voltage contactors in the Mach-E SR. Ford carried out a recall (23S56) for 2021–2022 models.
Symptoms: HV battery warning, power reduction, vehicle unable to charge or drive - !! Recall: HV Battery Main Contactors
Main HV battery contactors can overheat and fail with frequent DC charging. Ford recalled all vehicles before May 2022; battery switch box replacement required.

Dual motor, 363 kW system output, 98.7 kWh battery, MagneRide dampers standard. Acceleration is violent: 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, full torque instantly, no shift interruptions, no delay. One-pedal driving works brilliantly, regen is strong and linear. What the numbers hide: 4,890 lbs curb weight shows up in every corner. MagneRide helps but physics does not negotiate — this is a fast SUV, not a sports car. The synthetic propulsion sound is switchable and should be switched off. Thermal management is the weak point: repeated full-throttle launches or mountain passes trigger power derating to protect the battery. 12V battery drains faster than expected in standby — a known firmware issue. HV contactor recall (23S56) must be checked before purchase. DC fast charge rate drops significantly with cold or hot battery. Highway range at 80 mph: realistically 175-200 miles, not the 310 WLTP number.
- !! HV Contactors Overheating — Recall 23S56 (GT Directly Affected) from 20,000 km
The Mach-E GT is specifically named in Ford Recall 23S56 (2020–2022). The GT's high power output places particular stress on the HV contactors. Vehicles must be checked for recall status.
Symptoms: HV battery warning light, vehicle without drive, charging fault, sudden power loss - !! Battery Thermal Management Under High-Performance Use
The high power output of the Mach-E GT (487 hp) places extreme demands on battery thermal management. Repeated hard launches cause thermal throttling after just a few sprints.
Symptoms: Power reduction after multiple hard sprints, battery temperature warning, reduced charging speed - !! HV Battery Main Contactors Overheat — Recall 2022 from 20,000 km
Ford recalled 2021–2022 Mach-E vehicles due to possible overheating of the HV battery main contactors. Repeated DC fast charging or performance driving can deform the contacts. Fix: OTA or dealer software update.
Symptoms: Vehicle suddenly loses drive power while moving; difficulty starting after DC fast charge; warning messages in instrument cluster after multiple hard acceleration runs.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| 12V auxiliary battery discharges during charging The Mach-E's 12-volt auxiliary battery doesn't charge during HV charging. In cold conditions in particular it can fully deplete and lock the vehicle — doors, control units and start no longer function. Symptoms: Vehicle won't start despite full HV battery, doors don't respond to key fob, no response from start button. | Low | |
| Recall 2025: e-Latch locks doors on 12V failure Ford recalled over 315,000 Mach-E vehicles (model years 2021–2025): if the 12V battery drops below 8.4V, the electronic door latches (e-Latch) lose power. Passengers can become trapped. A PCM software update resolves the issue. Symptoms: Doors cannot be opened from the inside at low 12V voltage, particularly rear seats affected with children in the heat. | Low | |
| 12V Battery Drain – Vehicle Lockout The 12V auxiliary battery drains completely under certain software conditions, locking owners out — electronic door handles stop working. NHTSA recall 25V404 / Ford recall 25S65 covers 2021–2025 Mach-E. Symptoms: Vehicle won't start, doors unresponsive, tow required | Medium | |
| OTA Software Update Bricks Vehicle Over-the-air software updates can fail mid-installation, leaving the Mach-E unresponsive. Infotainment screen stays black or shows errors; anti-theft system may block the drivetrain. Symptoms: Black infotainment screen after update, vehicle unable to move, update stuck | Low | |
| Software instability and charging system faults Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E due to poor reliability. Frequent software faults affect charging, apps, ADAS systems and climate control. OTA updates help but don't permanently resolve all issues. Symptoms: Charging error despite a working charging station, app won't connect, SYNC crashes, AC unresponsive. | Low | |
| Charging problems: AC charging stops, OBC fault Mach-E owners report unreliable AC charging. Charging stops without error messages or doesn't start at all. The cause is partly a software fault in the on-board charger (OBC), partly failed charging control units. Ford released several OTA fixes. Symptoms: Charging doesn't start at a wallbox, charging stops after a short time, app shows charging error, vehicle not fully charged in the morning. | Medium | |
| Charging Speed Significantly Reduced in Cold Weather Below 32°F the BMS significantly reduces maximum charge rate. Affects both AC and DC charging. Pre-conditioning via app can help. Symptoms: Charge rate significantly reduced in cold, EVSE shows lower power output | Low | |
| SYNC 4 infotainment freezes and boots slowly The large SYNC 4 system in the Mach-E regularly freezes or responds sluggishly to inputs. Consumer Reports withdrew its recommendation for the Mach-E partly due to this infotainment instability. Over-the-air updates alleviate the problem. Symptoms: Touchscreen unresponsive to input, system hangs, navigation or apps fail to load, lengthy reboot required. | Low |
