Toyota Aygo X AB70

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

5.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Aygo X is Toyota's latest city car — first without Peugeot/Citroën siblings, now with SUV styling and the revised 1KR-FE2 three-cylinder. More character than predecessors, but the recipe stays: 1.0 liter, three-cylinder, city.

The 1KR-FE2 is an evolution of the proven engine. The CVT is now available as a genuine automatic alternative — much smoother than the old MultiMode/x-shift units. The manual's clutch wears faster than expected in city traffic.

Since the AB70 has only been on sale since 2022, long-term data is limited.

Test-drive checklist: Test CVT responsiveness on kickdown. Manual: check clutch bite point. Infotainment response times.

2026 market: Between $12,100 and $18,700 for young used with under 20,000 miles.

Insider pick: Aygo X 1.0 with CVT — finally a usable automatic in a city car.

Engine Overview

The Toyota Aygo X AB70 is available with one engine variant at 72 hp.

1.0L · Petrol· 72 PS

Evolution of the proven 1KR-FE on the latest small-car platform. A peppy, refined three-cylinder that only comes alive higher up — it needs revs lower down. The timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine and is considered maintenance-free. Still, keep oil changes strictly every 15,000 km or yearly, and it will comfortably pass 200,000 km. When buying, listen for a rattly cold start and check for a clean idle; slight oil use with age is normal. Very frugal and uncomplicated.

  • !! Water pump leaking from 60,000 km

The water pump on the 1KR-FE tends to coolant loss from around 50,000 km. Coloured deposits (blue, green, yellow) around the pump and elevated coolant temperature are typical signs.

Symptoms: Coloured deposits on the engine block, coolant loss in the expansion tank, temperature gauge rising
    180–450 $
  • ! Elevated oil consumption due to piston rings from 150,000 km

The revised 1KR-FE2 in the Aygo X shares its base architecture with the 1KR-FE and shows similar oil consumption with short-trip use, though less frequently than its predecessor.

Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between service intervals, blue smoke on cold start possible
    400–900 $
  • ! Upstream lambda sensor failure from 100,000 km

The upstream lambda sensor fails at higher mileages and leaves fault code P0420. Contact cleaning helps temporarily, but replacement is usually required.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, fault code P0420 in memory, slightly increased fuel consumption
    110–350 $

WeaknessCost
Recall: Brake Pedal Interference with Clutch

On vehicles produced between February and April 2022 an incorrect brake pedal was fitted. When the clutch pedal is depressed the brake pedal can inadvertently be pressed at the same time.

Symptoms: Unintended braking when pressing the clutch, particularly on pull-away and gear changes.
Low
Recall: Curtain airbag incorrectly positioned

In 922 Aygo X units (production 6 March–5 April 2022), the curtain shield airbag retaining straps were incorrectly positioned, potentially preventing proper deployment in a crash.

Symptoms: No driver symptom; detectable only via VIN check
