Nissan Qashqai J12

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

The Nissan Qashqai J12 (2021–2024) is the third generation on the new CMF-C platform — larger, stiffer and thoroughly electrified. There is no diesel any more: the line-up consists of the 1.3 DIG-T HR13DDT mild hybrid (140/158 hp) and, from 2022, the innovative e-Power system with the KR15DDT (190 hp system output), in which the combustion engine acts purely as a generator and an electric motor drives the wheels. The body remains a compact SUV with front- or all-wheel drive, outputs 140 to 190 hp. The key news: with e-Power, the troublesome Jatco CVT disappears entirely — the drivetrain feels like an EV, with no CVT risk. In return there are new, young issues: the e-Power can suffer system failures (control faults, inverter/generator problems) that require a workshop visit. The mild hybrid occasionally throws fault codes from the 12-volt mild-hybrid control. As a young model, the data is still thin overall — long-term experience is largely missing. Further documented weaknesses concern build and comfort: the DAB radio drops out, panel gaps and door fit are uneven, the blower motor is noisy, and the panoramic roof drain clogs — which can again let water into the cabin. On the chassis, the dampers fade early (short life), and the brake discs wear quickly — surprising on the e-Power given regen spares the brakes, but explicable on the mild hybrid with lots of city use. Buying advice: On e-Power cars check the fault memory and that all software updates are done; test drive with load changes and full throttle — the system should work seamlessly and judder-free. On the mild hybrid, watch for hybrid-control fault codes. Test DAB, infotainment and blower, check panel gaps and door closure, inspect the panoramic roof drains, and assess dampers and brakes. Remaining warranty and service history are especially valuable on this young model. For maximum smoothness take the e-Power; for simplicity, the 1.3 mild hybrid. Verdict: The J12 is the most mature, comfortable and best-built Qashqai yet — and with e-Power finally free of the CVT stigma. The new electrical and hybrid issues deserve attention but are mostly solvable under warranty/software. A recommendable family SUV, ideally with remaining warranty and a clean fault memory.

Engine Overview

The Nissan Qashqai J12 is available with 2 engine variants — from 140 to 163 hp.

1.3L · Petrol Mild-Hybrid· 140–159 PS
2021 2024

Modern 1.3L turbo direct-injection unit co-developed with Mercedes, making around 140 to 160 hp. Small in displacement but with solid low-end pull thanks to the turbo. Typical for direct injection is oil dilution in short-trip use, plus intake valve coking that eventually needs cleaning. The turbo can give out prematurely, while the timing chain and front cover seal are further weak points. Ignition coils fail here and there. Long-distance driving and good oil suit this engine well.

  • !! Turbocharger fails prematurely from 120,000 km

The HR13DDT turbocharger can fail prematurely from contamination or oil starvation. Part number A2820900280 is a well-known replacement type. Poor maintenance significantly increases the risk of bearing seizure.

Symptoms: Whistling or squealing under load, severe power drop, blue or black exhaust smoke
    900–1,800 $
  • !! CVT gearbox shows early wear from 70,000 km

The CVT gearbox paired with the HR13DDT shows jerking and overheating tendency from 60,000–80,000 km. Regular oil changes every 50,000 km are essential as the gearbox is unforgiving of neglect.

Symptoms: Jerking on pull-away, rough acceleration behaviour, gearbox enters failsafe when hot
    2,000–5,500 $
  • !! Timing chain stretched from 90,000 km

The timing chain of the HR13DDT stretches from around 90,000 km. Rattling on cold start is the first sign. A broken chain causes engine damage (interference engine). Expensive repair due to installation position.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rough running, check engine light, power loss
    1,250–3,000 $

1.5L · Petrol Hybrid· 190 PS
2022 2024

Innovative 1.5L turbo with variable compression via the VC mechanism, producing roughly 163 to 213 hp. The adjustable compression combines efficiency with power but is technically complex and costly to repair. The L-link actuator can trigger main bearing damage, and the adjustment mechanism suffers actuator and sensor failures. The timing chain sometimes rattles early, and like any direct-injection unit the intake valves carbon up. Meticulous maintenance and disciplined oil changes are mandatory here, otherwise it gets expensive fast.

  • !! Main bearing failure from L-link defect from 80,000 km

The KR15DDT VC-Turbo can develop faults in the main bearings and the L-link of the variable compression mechanism. In severe cases metal swarf is found in the oil sump. The NHTSA opened an investigation into engine failures.

Symptoms: Sudden engine failure, metal swarf in oil, oil pressure warning light, knocking from engine, complete engine shutdown
    4,000–12,000 $
  • !! VC mechanism actuator and sensor failure from 120,000 km

The complex variable compression mechanism includes actuators and sensors that can fail at high mileage. Repairs require specialist knowledge and are only possible at Nissan authorised workshops.

Symptoms: Check engine light, restricted engine power, irregular combustion, limp mode
    1,500–5,000 $
  • !! Timing chain rattles early from 150,000 km

The KR15DDT timing chain is by design relatively slender and can rattle earlier than usual. A preventive replacement around 150,000 km is advisable. A broken chain causes total engine failure.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, metallic chattering on load changes, engine stumbling
    800–2,000 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
e-Power system failure

The J12 e-Power system can fail with error messages. Defective generators are a known problem, with repair times of up to 10 weeks due to parts shortages.

Symptoms: Error message 'e-POWER System Malfunction', power loss, vehicle cannot be started after shutdown
from 40,000 km
Low
Mild hybrid control unit error messages

The 12V mild hybrid system in the J12 can produce error messages pointing to faulty sensors or software issues in the hybrid controller. Software updates resolve many problems.

Symptoms: Warning light 'Malfunction', unexpected stop-start shutdown, error messages on display
from 40,000 km
Medium
iDAB radio fails

The DAB radio in the J12 can fail spontaneously and only recover after the car has been parked for several minutes. Software bugs or connector issues are the most common cause.

Symptoms: Radio switches off, no sound, display unresponsive, requires reset after parking
from 30,000 km
