The first-generation Range Rover Evoque (L538, 2011 to 2018) was a genuine hit for Land Rover — a compact SUV whose striking design caught the mood of the moment and opened the brand up to a younger, more urban audience. The sales figures and the image were right, the car still looks good today and drives with agility. Viewed soberly, though, the Evoque is above all a lifestyle SUV wearing a Land Rover badge: off-road ability is decent but not the point. More important for a used purchase is the realisation that reliability can't always keep pace with the handsome looks.

Among the engines there's no worry-free choice. The 2.2-litre diesel (224DT from the Ford/PSA era) runs a timing belt — the scheduled change is mandatory, or engine damage looms. Add the usual diesel themes: DPF, EGR coking, injectors, high-pressure pump. The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (204DTD) fitted from 2015 is more modern and torquey, but has structural weaknesses: the timing chain is considered especially vulnerable before 2019, along with oil dilution from DPF regeneration, turbo failure from oil starvation and the piston-cooling-valve issue caused by a coolant leak. The 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol shares the chain problem. The stronger, less-stressed variants tend to be soundest — the small 110 kW diesels are weak and not really recommendable.

The vehicle-level weaknesses are the real sticking point. The ZF 9HP nine-speed automatic jerks and shifts harshly — a well-known, widespread annoyance. The Haldex clutch (Gen 4) fails when oil changes are neglected, the panoramic roof is often leaky with a wet boot and footwell, and the rear brake discs rust and wear early. Add failed door-lock actuators, a frequently temperamental keyless system and various electronic gremlins in the climate and heating systems. This is precisely where Land Rover's reputation took shape.

Buying advice: service history is essential, especially proof of Haldex oil changes and gearbox service. On the diesel, clarify the timing-belt or chain status; on the Ingenium, listen for chain rattle at cold start. Check the panoramic roof drains, boot floor and footwell mats for damp, and drive the 9HP automatic thoroughly both cold and warm. Recalls and service actions should have been completed. A well-kept Evoque with full history can be an attractive, everyday-usable car — but anyone buying the cheapest example without paperwork usually pays the saving back several times over through gearbox, electronics and water ingress.
