At launch in 2024 there were two drivetrains: the familiar 1.2-litre three-cylinder full hybrid with 147 kW of system output, and, from late 2024, the more elaborate plug-in hybrid with an extra electric motor on the rear axle that creates all-wheel drive purely electrically, without a mechanical propshaft, lifting system output to 221 kW. Buyers should know that behind the Multi-Mode transmission name on both variants lies the same character flaw: when pulling away and during part-throttle load changes, the drivetrain shifts noticeably jerkily, something several independent tests confirm consistently. Anyone expecting a perfectly smooth driving feel at all times should specifically check pull-away behaviour and mid-range acceleration in city traffic on a test drive.
Braking reveals a second, less well-known quirk: according to long-term owner reports, the transition between regenerative and mechanical braking in the strongest regeneration setting is not always seamless, with occasional squealing when the mechanical brake engages. One more reason to try out the different regeneration levels on a test drive.
On the software side, the Rafale is a typical modern Renault product with all the usual pros and cons: the openR Link system with Google integration is modern and easy to use, but occasional glitches with sound, seat adjustment, phone pairing and instrument cluster readouts keep coming up in forums. Two service items are already documented: a safety-relevant recall for an incorrectly positioned sensor in the electronic parking brake actuator affects a small batch built between April 2024 and May 2025 — worth checking the vehicle history before buying. In practice, the coupé silhouette limits everyday usability somewhat: rear visibility is poor, and the loading lip sits at an unusually high roughly 82 centimetres. On the plug-in hybrid, the onboard charger only accepts single-phase AC at up to 7.4 kW, and charge-current detection on simple household sockets is not always reliable — a wallbox with the right cable is a clear advantage here.

As a buying recommendation: anyone driving mostly in town and on short trips with a wallbox at home benefits most from the plug-in hybrid, while high-mileage drivers are better served by the simpler, cheaper full hybrid, avoiding the extra technical complexity of the large battery and rear motor.

The turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine is only one building block of a system built around two electric motors up front and a third one on the rear axle that creates all-wheel drive purely electrically, with no mechanical propshaft at all. This layout cuts mechanical wear in the drivetrain but places heavy demands on cooling for the power electronics and motors under sustained load, for instance during spirited driving or long uphill stretches with a depleted battery. When the state of charge is low, the combustion engine kicks in more often and for longer stretches to recharge the battery, which noticeably increases fuel consumption compared with the full-hybrid version. The large drive battery sits low in the underbody, lowering the centre of gravity, but adds considerably to overall weight, putting extra strain on the brakes and suspension components. As a relatively young drivetrain concept, there is not yet reliable long-term data on battery ageing or the durability of the power electronics in everyday use.

Workshop feedback points to a batch fitted with a coolant type that no longer matches specification, which can lead to oxidation inside the cooling circuit. Affected cars are switched to the correct coolant type as part of a service campaign.

The onboard charger only accepts single-phase AC at up to 7.4 kW, so there is no benefit from a three-phase connection. On simple household sockets the car sometimes misreads the available current and charges more slowly than it could.
