MINI MINI 5-Türer F55

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The MINI 5-Door F55 (2014–2023) is the pragmatic answer to MINI's eternal criticism: not enough space. The wheelbase grows 161 mm over the F56 3-door — more rear legroom, easier entry. Platform and engineering identical to the F56; every weakness transfers.

Engines: B38A12 (One First, 55 kW) — the smallest MINI engine ever, 1.2 three-cylinder. Adequate in town, struggles on the motorway. B38B15 (Cooper, 75–100 kW) — the sensible three-cylinder, enough for daily use. B48B20 (Cooper S, 131–141 kW) — turns the F55 into a proper MINI again. B37C15 (Cooper D, 85 kW) for high-mileage — watch DPF on short runs.

Common problems: Hydraulic engine mounts fail on early cars (to 2018) mostly before 60,000 km — clunking on cold starts, $550–1,650 to replace. Front scuttle wiring loom: leak causes short circuits, random warning lights, notoriously hard to diagnose. Plastic oil filter housing cracks from 100,000 km. DMF and clutch on manuals at 100,000–120,000 km ($1,650–2,750). Aisin GA8G45 automatic (from 2019) with bearing wear.

Test-drive checklist: Cold start listen — thud = engine mounts. Manual: clutch pedal judder. Automatic (from 2019): rough 2-to-3 = GA8G45. Pre-2018: warning lights after cold start. Remove oil cap: sludge or mayo = bigger problem.

2026 market: One from $11,000. Cooper from $13,200–18,700. Cooper S from $17,600–24,200.

Insider pick: Cooper S (B48B20) manual, 2017–2019, under 80,000 km — past the engine mount cluster, before the GA8G45 era.
