The first standalone-generation IS (XE20, 2006–2013) was Lexus' attempt to take on the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4 in the compact sports-sedan segment. Mechanically it follows the classic recipe: rear-wheel drive, balanced weight distribution and free-revving naturally aspirated V6 engines with no turbo in sight. Anyone familiar with the German rivals quickly notices the IS marches to a different beat — less badge prestige, but Toyota-grade material quality and build that rarely gives cause for complaint even after 15 years.
When it comes to engines there's a clear recommendation: the 2GR-FSE, a 3.5-litre V6 producing 228 kW. This engine is thoroughly solid, with mileages well beyond 200,000 kilometres being entirely normal. By design the fifth cylinder can run a touch hotter, which in rare cases leads to elevated oil consumption — no cause for alarm, but a glance at the oil level before buying is worthwhile. The smaller 4GR-FSE 2.5-litre (the IS 250) needs to be bought with eyes open. Its D4-S direct injection causes carbon build-up on the intake valves — not a question of if, but when. Lexus even ran a service programme to address it. On top of that come possible cylinder scoring on the fifth cylinder and a recall for defective valve springs.
Across both engines there was the VVT-i oil line, replaced under a service campaign — on any purchase candidate this work should be demonstrably done, because a failure can get expensive.
Away from the engine the XE20 shows the typical age-related quirks of these model years. The sticky, sometimes melting dashboard is a well-known annoyance, especially in cars that have seen a lot of sun. The navigation system is simply dated today. Worn lower control-arm bushings, premature brake wear and occasional failures of the alternator, electric power steering, window regulators or door-lock actuators are all part of the picture for a car of this age — none of it unusual or ruinous.
The bottom line is that the IS XE20 is an honest, above-average reliable sports sedan that is noticeably less demanding to maintain than its German competition. Choose the 3.5-litre V6, check the documented history of the service campaigns, and you get a car that can run for many more years. With the 2.5-litre you simply have to live with the valve coking or factor it in — do that, and it remains one of the most dependable options in its class.

The Lexus IS XE20 is available with 4 engine variants — from 208 to 311 hp.
2.5L V6 with Toyota's D4-S direct injection — the IS 250 engine that gave Lexus its biggest reliability headache. Carbon buildup on intake valves is not a matter of if, but when. Lexus issued a Customer Service Program for 2006-2010 models and updated piston rings in later production. Cylinder scuffing on the fifth cylinder is the terminal failure — thin-wall liners cannot be bored, so the block is scrap. The engine makes smooth, adequate power but 208 hp in a 3,400-lb sedan is merely acceptable. Runs best on premium fuel. Oil changes at 5,000 miles with 0W-20 synthetic are non-negotiable.

Direct injection deposits carbon on intake valves, restricting airflow. Lexus issued a Customer Service Program for 2006-2010 IS 250 models and updated piston rings in later production. Walnut blasting is the standard fix. Head removal required in severe cases.

Design flaw causes scuffing on the fifth cylinder bore. Thin-wall cylinder liners cannot be bored or sleeved — the entire block must be replaced. Manifests as excessive oil consumption that progressively worsens. No cost-effective repair exists.

Rubber portion of the VVT-i oil supply hose degrades from PCV blow-by gases. Develops a pinhole that expands into a full rupture. Oil loss triggers low oil pressure, and continued driving causes catastrophic engine failure from oil starvation. Lexus Limited Service Campaign replaced the hose at no charge.

This 3.5-litre V6 with D4-S dual injection is fundamentally solid and comfortably clears 200,000 km when serviced properly. The direct injection gives crisp throttle response, but by design the fifth cylinder runs hotter, which can lead to bore scoring and oil consumption over time. Keep an eye on the water pump and ignition coils from around 50,000 km. Early builds were recalled for the VVT-i oil line and defective valve springs, so confirm those campaigns were completed before buying. Keep the coolant clean and on interval, and it stays a long-lived naturally aspirated engine.
