Engine Overview
The Lexus IS XE20 is available with 2 engine variants — from 208 to 316 hp.
2.5L V6 with Toyota's D4-S direct injection — the IS 250 engine that gave Lexus its biggest reliability headache. Carbon buildup on intake valves is not a matter of if, but when. Lexus issued a Customer Service Program for 2006-2010 models and updated piston rings in later production. Cylinder scuffing on the fifth cylinder is the terminal failure — thin-wall liners cannot be bored, so the block is scrap. The engine makes smooth, adequate power but 208 hp in a 3,400-lb sedan is merely acceptable. Runs best on premium fuel. Oil changes at 5,000 miles with 0W-20 synthetic are non-negotiable.
- !! Intake Valve Carbon Buildup (CSP) from 80,000 km
Direct injection deposits carbon on intake valves, restricting airflow. Lexus issued a Customer Service Program for 2006-2010 IS 250 models and updated piston rings in later production. Walnut blasting is the standard fix. Head removal required in severe cases.
Symptoms: Check engine light (P0300-P0306 misfires), rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, reduced power, increased fuel consumption - !! Cylinder Scuffing (5th Cylinder) from 120,000 km
Design flaw causes scuffing on the fifth cylinder bore. Thin-wall cylinder liners cannot be bored or sleeved — the entire block must be replaced. Manifests as excessive oil consumption that progressively worsens. No cost-effective repair exists.
Symptoms: Increasing oil consumption (1 quart per 1,000 miles or worse), blue smoke on startup, rough running, misfire codes - !! VVT-i Oil Line Failure (Service Campaign) from 100,000 km
Rubber portion of the VVT-i oil supply hose degrades from PCV blow-by gases. Develops a pinhole that expands into a full rupture. Oil loss triggers low oil pressure, and continued driving causes catastrophic engine failure from oil starvation. Lexus Limited Service Campaign replaced the hose at no charge.
Symptoms: Oil puddle under engine, low oil pressure warning, engine noise, oil spray on undercarriage

The 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 is rock-solid — 200k+ miles is normal. Known issue: cylinder 5 overheating by design can cause oil consumption and cylinder wall damage. Check water pump and coils from 30-50k miles.
- !! Cylinder Bore Scuffing from 150,000 km
Similar to the 4GR-FSE but less prevalent. Cylinder bore scuffing leads to oil consumption. Block replacement is the only permanent fix due to thin-wall liner construction. Most 2GR-FSE engines avoid this issue with proper maintenance.
Symptoms: Gradual increase in oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, oil on spark plugs - !! VVT-i Oil Line Failure (Recall Campaign) from 100,000 km
Rubber VVT-i oil supply hose degrades over time. Same failure mode as the 4GR-FSE — pinhole develops, expands, oil sprays out. Engine failure from oil starvation if not addressed. Covered under Toyota/Lexus Limited Service Campaign for 2006-2010 models.
Symptoms: Oil leak at front of engine, low oil warning, oil pressure warning light, engine knocking - !! Valve Spring Defect (Recall)
Metal impurities in valve springs cause fracture risk. 2007-2008 production recalled for free spring replacement. Same campaign as the 4GR-FSE. Verify recall completion on any pre-owned purchase.
Symptoms: Misfires, valve train ticking, check engine light, rough running

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Dashboard Melting / Sticky Surface Dashboard surface becomes sticky and develops a melted, shiny appearance. Affects 2006-2008 IS 250/350 models. Covered under Lexus warranty enhancement program ZLD (expired). Same material defect as RX and ES models of the same era. Symptoms: Sticky dashboard, chemical odor, shiny reflective surface, material breakdown | High |
