BMW iX3 G08
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The iX3 G08 (2020–2022) was BMW's first fully electric SUV — based on the X3 G01, built in China at BMW Brilliance. A solid electric SUV with typical BMW driving character, but no revolution. Rear-wheel drive only (no xDrive).
One motor, one power output: the BMW Gen5 Single electric motor with 210 kW. Reliable, low-maintenance — no oil changes, no timing chain, no exhaust. The technology is proven and shared with the i4 and iX.
Weaknesses are typical EV issues: Winter range loss is the most-discussed topic — up to 37% less at -7°C. That's physics, not a defect: the iX3 has no heat pump (only the successor does). BMS software recall for 2019–2021 production — in a severe crash the 12V system could fail. Software update, free of charge. Battery module welding defect in early production (~2,000 cars, China) — short-circuit/fire risk, free replacement. iDrive 6 feels dated compared to newer BMW EVs.
Test-drive checklist: Compare range display at different temperatures. Test DC fast-charging speed (should reach 150 kW). Check iDrive responsiveness. Verify recalls by VIN beforehand.
2026 market: From $31,000–40,000 — significant depreciation from new price (~$71,500). Low production numbers, limited used market.
Insider pick: iX3 Impressive from 2021 — past the early battery recalls, with improved software. For commuters with charging access, a solid electric SUV without typical BMW engine complexity.

DecentEngine Overview
The BMW iX3 G08 is available with one engine variant at 116 hp.
Fifth generation of the BMW electric drivetrain with a single motor. High efficiency through an electrically excited synchronous motor without rare-earth magnets. Watch the 12V battery and control unit software.
- !! Faulty switching valve in cooling circuit (Vitesco) from 30,000 km
A Vitesco switching valve (64119462114) in the cooling circuit fails, especially in frost. Coolant runs out before the warning light activates. BMW temporarily imposed a global delivery stop on new i4s.
Symptoms: Coolant puddle under the car; heater fails before warning light illuminates; coolant level warning appears too late. - !! Recall: software algorithm shuts down high-voltage system
A software bug in the HV system monitoring triggers a preventive drivetrain shutdown even when no actual hazard exists. Vehicle loses drive within 15–20 seconds. BMW recalled 70,852 vehicles (i4/iX/i5/i7, MY 2022–2025).
Symptoms: Warning 'High-voltage system fault' followed by loss of drive; steering and brake assist remain active; car coasts slowly to a stop. - !! Recall: manufacturing defect in HV battery cells (fire risk)
HV battery cell modules were not manufactured to specification. Module frame can crack, shut down the high-voltage system, or cells can overheat to fire risk. Affected: i4, iX, i7 (production 07.2021–02.2024).
Symptoms: Loss of drive while moving; HV battery warning; in rare cases smoke or fire.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall: Battery module weld defect Poor welds on battery terminals caused deviations in voltage and temperature measurement. 1,974 iX3 units were recalled. BMW replaces affected battery modules free of charge. Symptoms: Battery fault message, unexpected loss of drive, errors in range display | Low | |
| Recall: Battery management system software A software fault in the BMS can damage control units and the 12V electrical system via overvoltage in a severe crash. Hazard warning lights, indicators and eCall can then fail. Affected production: July 2019 to May 2021. Approximately 2,040 vehicles in Germany. Symptoms: No direct driving symptoms — safety systems may fail in the event of an accident | Low |
