Toyota Proace City Verso K9 — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Proace City Verso is Toyota's take on the Stellantis K9 platform and is technically near-identical to the Citroën Berlingo III, Peugeot Rifter and Opel Combo E Life – built in the same plant, with the same engines and the same body. On sale since April 2020 and facelifted with a new front end in April 2024, this high-roof compact van is aimed at families needing plenty of space, offered with five or seven seats. Under the bonnet sit two familiar units: the 1.5-litre diesel (DV5) with 75 kW/102 hp or 96 kW/130 hp, available with a six-speed manual or EAT8 eight-speed automatic, and the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol (EB2) with 81 kW/110 hp as a manual or 96 kW/130 hp as an automatic. After the 2024 facelift the stronger petrol automatic disappeared from the German line-up, while the diesel range and the 81 kW petrol carried on unchanged. Since 2021 there has also been a pure electric version with 100 kW peak power, 57 kW continuous power and a 50 kWh net battery good for roughly 260 to 345 km WLTP range depending on model year.
What stands out is the long recall history: an unsuitable underbody heat shield, an incorrectly connected auxiliary battery risking steering failure and fire, a temperature sensor fault on the electric version's charging cable, software issues affecting eCall and the instrument cluster, an AdBlue diagnostic that fails to warn the driver, rear tyres rated below the permitted axle load, reduced braking performance, and several drive-failure campaigns run through the entire production span. A VIN check at a Toyota dealer or via the German KBA recall database is well worth doing before buying.
Beyond the official recalls, the typical K9 platform themes show up here too: sliding doors gradually stop running cleanly in their tracks, the AdBlue and particulate filter system is sensitive to purely short, urban trips, and sensors or driver assistance systems occasionally drop out, often linked to a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery. Water ingress into the footwell or boot through clogged drain channels or leaking door and tailgate seals is another known, but usually easily fixed, nuisance.
For a used buy, the 96 kW diesel is the sound all-rounder with enough pull even fully loaded, and the EAT8 automatic shifts pleasantly unobtrusively. The 75 kW diesel and the 81 kW petrol feel strained quickly with seven occupants and luggage aboard. The electric version suits city and family daily driving with manageable daily distances best, as range gets tight for long holiday trips. When viewing a car, check the sliding door tracks, test the AdBlue warning light, and take a test drive during or after heavy rain to rule out water ingress early.

Stay Away!Engine Overview
The Toyota Proace City Verso K9 is available with 4 engine variants — from 102 to 136 hp.
Modern PSA diesel (1.5L BlueHDi) with common-rail, SCR catalyst, and AdBlue. Fuel-efficient and torquey, but the camshaft chain (only 7 mm wide) is the biggest weak point — Stellantis extended the warranty to 10 years/240,000 km. Always check whether the 8 mm chain update has been performed. The AdBlue system and DPF are prone to issues with short-trip driving. The high-pressure fuel pump can seize from fuel contamination.
- !! Premature timing chain wear — subject to recall from 80,000 km
The only 7 mm wide timing chain stretches prematurely and can snap. Oil dilution from short-trip use accelerates the problem. Stellantis has initiated a mega recall covering 141,700 vehicles in Germany.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start, engine management light, rough engine running, in the worst case sudden engine shutdown from chain snap while driving - !! High-pressure pump seizes from 40,000 km
The Bosch high-pressure pump on the DV5 can seize, particularly on vehicles with fewer than 50,000 km. Metal swarf enters the fuel system and requires replacement of the entire injection system.
Symptoms: Engine no longer starts or stalls while driving, engine management light, metallic noise from engine bay, power loss shortly before total failure - !! Timing chain recall — warranty extension
Stellantis has extended the warranty to 10 years / 240,000 km (since July 2025). A software update increases oil pressure and a special oil change is performed. Chain replacement free of charge if required.
Symptoms: Affected vehicles receive a recall notification. Workshop performs diagnosis, checks chain stretch via camshaft/crankshaft sensor comparison.

Turbocharged variant of the PSA three-cylinder with an oil-bathed timing belt. The belt runs in engine oil and can delaminate prematurely on short trips with long oil change intervals, blocking the oil passages. Stellantis granted an extended warranty of 10 years/175,000 km for affected production years in 2024.
- !! Wet belt deterioration in oil bath from 70,000 km
Oil-bath timing belt delaminates due to fuel dilution of the oil; stop-start operation of the mild hybrid system adds additional belt stress. Newer Gen 3 engines from 2022 feature a revised design.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noises, power drop, potential engine damage - !! Elevated oil consumption from coked piston rings from 75,000 km
Oil scraper rings coke up from short-trip use with direct injection. In extreme cases the engine consumes 3 litres per 1,000 km. Stellantis acknowledged the problem and offers goodwill up to 175,000 km.
Symptoms: Significantly elevated oil consumption, blue smoke clouds under acceleration, oil warning light - !! Turbocharger failure due to oil pressure problems from 90,000 km
The turbocharger is sensitive to degraded or fuel-diluted oil. Oil passages clogged by wet-belt particles can destroy the turbo bearings. Frequently a secondary failure following wet-belt problems.
Symptoms: Whistling turbo noise, blue smoke, power loss, oil pressure loss

PureTech 130 Turbo (96 kW) — same engine as the EB2-DT with more boost pressure. Shares the wet-belt issue of production years before 2019 entirely. Crankshaft end-float from worn thrust washers is the second major weak point — once exceeding 0.5 mm, engine failure is imminent. Oil consumption from piston ring coking should be monitored from 60,000 km onwards. From 2022, significantly more reliable with a timing chain.
- !! Wet belt deterioration in oil bath from 65,000 km
Oil-bath timing belt delaminates due to fuel dilution of the oil; stop-start operation of the mild hybrid system adds additional belt stress. Newer Gen 3 engines from 2022 feature a revised design.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noises, power drop, potential engine damage - !! Elevated oil consumption — piston rings from 75,000 km
Oil scraper rings coke up from short-trip use with direct injection; engine can consume up to 3 l/1,000 km. Stellantis offers extended goodwill up to 175,000 km for build years before 2022.
Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, blue smoke on throttle, frequent oil checks needed - !! Turbo bearing damage from diluted oil from 85,000 km
Higher boost levels increase thermal stress; fuel-diluted engine oil reduces lubricity and damages the turbo journal bearings. Warning signs are often not detectable in advance.
Symptoms: Whistling or rattling turbo noise, bluish exhaust smoke, power drop

First PSA electric motor (100 kW) on the CMP platform with a 50 kWh battery (340-362 km WLTP). DC fast charging up to 100 kW. The Mahle OBC (onboard charger) from model years 2019-2022 is the most well-known weakness — three revisions failed to fix it, only the switch to the VMAX OBC from mid-2022 resolved the issue. The 12V battery drains during extended periods of standing. The heat pump compressor is the most expensive single repair. Software updates are frequently required.
- !! BMS software: drive loss while driving from 20,000 km
Faulty BMS software configuration can cause the electric motor to cut out suddenly while driving. Recall MDY affected 21,345 vehicles (4,632 in Germany) from build year 2022.
Symptoms: Motor suddenly cuts out while driving, drive lost, no prior warning - !! Heat pump compressor corrodes and fails from 40,000 km
The moisture trap in the heat pump refrigerant circuit is undersized and allows moisture through to the compressor. This causes corrosion and compressor failure. Peugeot acknowledged the problem in Japan and replaced compressors; in Europe customers bear the cost (approx. 1,400–3,300 Euro).
Symptoms: Heating fails in winter or works inefficiently, 'electric drivetrain system fault' warning, A/C compressor noise, comfort loss in cold below -5°C - !! Mahle on-board charger (OBC) failed from 50,000 km
The fitted Mahle CAOBC1 on-board charger is known for charging failures. AC charging drops out, wallbox charging no longer possible. Repair costs approx. 2,500–3,500 €. Successor VMAX OBC is more reliable.
Symptoms: AC charging no longer works, charging session aborts immediately, charging system fault message

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall series for fire risk (underbody heat shield, common rail) An unsuitable metal heat shield near the engine can collect flammable debris such as leaves and grass, which can ignite on hot exhaust parts. A later campaign (2025 build) also covered a possible fuel leak at the common rail with fire risk. | Low | |
| Recall: incorrectly connected auxiliary battery In a cross-brand Toyota recall (also covering the Proace City), an incorrectly connected auxiliary battery cable can cause power steering failure and, in the worst case, a fire risk. Symptoms: Steering suddenly becomes heavy while driving. | Low | |
| Recall (Electric): miscalibrated charging cable temperature sensor On the electric version, a miscalibrated temperature sensor on the charging cable can lead to overheating and, in extreme cases, fire during charging. Around 108 vehicles were affected. | Low | |
| Recall: tyre load rating below rear axle capacity On certain vehicles the rear tyre load rating is below the technically permitted maximum rear axle load, which can overload the rear wheels when fully laden. | Low | |
| Recall series: reduced braking performance / cracked brake discs Two campaigns affected the braking system: reduced braking performance due to loss of hydraulic compensation, and front axle brake discs that do not meet specification and can crack or break (139 vehicles affected). Symptoms: Longer stopping distance, brake pedal feel becoming softer. | Low | |
| Recall series: engine/drive failure while driving Spread across several model years, three campaigns related to the engine and drivetrain: engine failure, general loss of drive, and a series involving drive failure where parts can additionally come loose and end up on the road. Symptoms: Sudden loss of power or engine stall while driving. | Low | |
| Software recalls: eCall emergency function and instrument cluster Two software campaigns hit the electronics: a restricted eCall function and a fault that can blank the instrument cluster, including the speed display, while driving (around 65,600 vehicles worldwide, fixable via over-the-air update). Symptoms: Instrument cluster / speed display fails while driving. | Low | |
| Recall (diesel): AdBlue diagnostics do not warn the driver Two software campaigns hit the diesel AdBlue diagnostics: a miscalibrated urea pump diagnosis fails to warn when the SCR catalyst is deactivated, and a further fault keeps the warning light off when AdBlue use falls too low. | Low | |
| AdBlue/particulate filter system sensitive to short trips On the diesel variants, frequent cold starts and purely short urban trips lead to deposits in the AdBlue system, EGR valve and particulate filter. Regular longer drives help the system regenerate. Symptoms: Emissions treatment warning lights, loss of power up to limp-home mode. | Low |
