The Kadjar I (2015–2022) is Renault's compact SUV built on the Nissan Qashqai's CMF platform — a lot of car for the money, with a 5-star crash rating and mostly easy-going inspection history. The engine alone decides whether you'll be happy.
The pragmatic buy is the K9K (1.5 dCi, 81 kW): one of Europe's most widely built diesels, a real-world 5.5 l/100 km, and good for well beyond 200,000 km with DPF care and motorway use. For more punch there's the R9M (1.6 dCi, 96 kW) — strong, available as 4x4, but keep an eye on the turbo and injectors. Steer clear of the H5F (1.2 TCe, 96 kW): this petrol is the timing-chain time bomb, with cold-start rattle signalling expensive repairs and, at worst, an engine swap. Renault revised the chain tensioner over a dozen times and ultimately dropped the engine — that says it all.
The second recurring theme is the 7-speed EDC dual-clutch on the petrols (up to around 2018): jerking, delayed pull-away, in extreme cases a clutch and gearbox replacement. The diesels' 6-speed EDC is regarded as tougher. Add to that rusting brake discs (missing splash guards, the most common inspection fault) and the clunky R-Link 1 infotainment of the early years.
Test drive: Start the engine cold and listen for chain rattle on the H5F. Pull away from a standstill several times on EDC versions — any hesitation or jerk is a warning sign. Check brake discs for rust grooves and uneven wear, and the front of the engine bay for oil seepage at the timing-chain cover.
Market 2026: Early diesels (2015–2016, 150,000 km+) from around $9,000, risky. The sweet spot is the 2019 facelift with a well-kept diesel under 100,000 km at $14,000–17,000. Tidy late cars up to about $20,000.
Insider pick: The K9K as a manual from the 2019 facelift. It dodges both the petrol's timing-chain trap and the temperamental petrol EDC — and gives you a diesel that's almost impossible to kill with clean maintenance. If it absolutely has to be petrol, accept only an H5F with full documentation of an up-to-date timing-chain repair kit.

The K9K connecting rod bearings are design-sensitive. With overly long oil change intervals or incorrect oil the bearing shells spin from around 100,000–150,000 km, resulting in total engine failure.

The Delphi high-pressure pump shows weaknesses from around 80,000 km. Metal wear from the pump contaminates the fuel circuit and damages the injectors and common rail — with consequential damage included.

The 1.5 dCi is an interference belt engine. With an overdue change interval or faulty fitting the belt snaps, valves and pistons collide — total loss. Early failures well before the scheduled interval are documented.
