Mazda CX-6e 1 — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Mazda CX-6e launches in summer 2026 as the brand's first fully electric D-segment SUV and marks a technical break with Mazda's usual approach: instead of a proprietary platform, it uses the Chinese EPA1 architecture from the Changan-Mazda joint venture – the same base underlying the sibling model 6e. At launch there is only one powertrain option: a rear motor with 258 hp system output paired with a 78 kWh LFP battery. All-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid variant, which would be technically possible on the same platform, are absent for now.
The LFP cell chemistry scores with strong cycle durability and thermal stability, but adds noticeable weight – the car tips the scales at well over two tonnes, which shows up in efficiency. The WLTP range of up to 484 km shrinks in everyday use to more like 350 to 400 km. DC charging power of up to 195 kW falls short of what current 800-volt competitors offer, and only an 11 kW AC charger comes standard – a 22 kW option is missing.
For used-car buyers, the key point is: this vehicle is brand new, and there is no reliable long-term data yet on battery ageing, power electronics, or motor durability. However, the CX-6e shares its technical base with the longer-established sibling model, which showed clear software teething problems early on: the lane-keep/steering assist intervened unreliably, a corrective update took nearly a year to arrive, and both cold-weather battery preconditioning and actually achievable charging power fell short of specification. Whether the CX-6e benefits from the meanwhile-issued updates or shows similar early issues cannot be conclusively judged yet – for an early example, it is worth specifically asking the dealer about the current software status.
Concrete criticisms from initial test drives mainly concern operation: touch-only controls with no physical rotary dial distract more while driving than on older Mazda models, the optional digital exterior mirrors place their screens unusually at dashboard height inside the doors, and tall rear passengers hit the headroom limit from around 1.95 m. Access to the front storage compartment is also only possible via a footwell lever rather than an exterior release.
Build quality, safety equipment, and ride comfort are rated consistently positively in tests so far, and the starting price of €49,990 is fair for the equipment level. The eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty guaranteeing at least 70 percent capacity matches the industry standard. As a used car, it is worth checking the update history and current software status with the dealer before even discussing classic wear-and-tear topics – the model is simply still too young for that.
Engine Overview
The Mazda CX-6e 1 is available with one engine variant at 258 hp.
The drive unit sits on the rear axle and comes from a Chinese-Japanese cooperation platform with iron-phosphate cell chemistry mounted under the floor. This chemistry is thermally stable and offers strong cycle durability, but adds noticeable weight that measurably reduces overall efficiency. The charging architecture reaches a peak output that is decent for this cell chemistry, but only under optimal conditions – with a cold battery or a heavily loaded charging station, output drops noticeably. Software-based preconditioning of the battery ahead of charging still appears immature on the technically identical drivetrain of the sibling model, which can lead to noticeably slower charging in cold weather. As a completely new drivetrain generation with a very young registration history, there is no reliable long-term data yet on cell ageing, power electronics, or motor durability. For a used example it is worth checking battery health via manufacturer diagnostics as well as software version and update history, since the shared platform has already needed several follow-up software fixes.
- ! Battery preconditioning barely reacts in cold weather
On the technically identical drivetrain of the sibling model, active battery preconditioning at low temperatures remained largely ineffective – the battery stayed cold even after several minutes. This has not yet been independently confirmed for the CX-6e's identical battery system.
Symptoms: With a cold battery, DC fast-charging power drops noticeably without any noticeable preheating taking effect. - ! DC charging power falls short of spec in everyday use
Test drivers of the sibling model with an identical battery system could not reliably reach the specified charging power – in some cases actual output was significantly below the datasheet value. Whether the CX-6e shows the same behaviour still remains to be seen in practice.
Symptoms: Charging power at DC fast chargers repeatedly stays below the advertised peak, without external factors such as high temperature alone explaining it.
Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Driver-assist software from the identical sibling model showed early teething issues The CX-6e shares its electrical architecture and assistance software with the sibling model, where the lane-keep/steering assist intervened unreliably for an extended period after delivery, and a corrective update took nearly a year to arrive. Whether the CX-6e benefits from this is still open. Symptoms: Unwanted, sometimes forceful steering interventions from the lane-keep assist, which only noticeably improved on the sibling model after a major software update. | Low |
