Honda Civic Type R FL5

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The FL5 is the most mature Type R — and to many the best ever built. The turbocharged K20C1 makes around 315 hp, comes only with a six-speed manual, and the front-wheel-drive lap records speak for themselves. More grown-up looks than the aggressive predecessor, a brilliant chassis with adaptive dampers, rev-match — an everyday sports car that delivers on track. Unlike the EK9 and FN2, it was sold in the US too.

The K20C1 is highly durable; the known issues are detail-level. Shifting into second and third can crunch (clutch delay), on track the Brembo discs pick up uneven pad deposits (judder), and the deep front splitter scrapes on steep driveways. Plus two recalls: the steering gearbox worm wheel (NHTSA 24V-744, fixed free) and a faulty weld on the driver's seat frame. The infotainment sometimes boots very slowly and its housing rattles, and the adaptive damper system occasionally throws a fault.

Test-drive checklist: Check for track history — brakes, tyres, clutch wear, accident repair. Clear both open recalls (steering gearbox, seat frame) by VIN. Test shifts into second and third for crunching, inspect the front splitter for scrape marks, check the adaptive suspension for fault codes. Verify the ECU is stock if warranty matters.

2026 market: The FL5 holds its value unusually well — clean cars sit around $44,000–46,000, often near or above the original sticker; early cars sold with steep dealer markups. Don't overpay; the allocation pressure has eased.

Insider pick: a stock, full-history, low-mileage FL5 — there's only the manual, so condition and originality are the differentiators. Avoid tuned or track-flogged examples.

Engine Overview

The Honda Civic Type R FL5 is available with 3 engine variants — from 310 to 329 hp.

2.0L VTEC Turbo · Petrol· 329 PS
2022 2024

2.0-litre VTEC Turbo, 306-329 hp — Honda proved VTEC and forced induction belong together. The K20C1 does not scream like the old NA VTEC: instead of wailing to 8,200, it delivers a broader, bassier turbo hit to 7,000. Purists mourn; everyone else just grins. 400 Nm from 2,500 rpm makes daily driving easier than any NA Type R ever was. The 6-speed across all generations (FK2, FK8, FL5) is the most praised element — widely called the best manual gearbox on sale. FK8 long-term test: 80,000 km, zero failures. Wastegate rattle on cold start is normal. FL5 fixes the FK8 2nd-gear grinding issue. Tuning: Stage 1 gets 350+ hp.

  • !! Rod and bearing limit under tuning (~400 hp / 400 lb-ft) from 80,000 km

OEM K20C1 rods are spec'd for the factory 306–329 hp range. Stage 2 tunes beyond 400 hp or 400 lb-ft regularly bend rods and spin bearings. Hondata and 4 Piston Racing explicitly warn against low-rpm torque spikes. Stock cars not affected.

Symptoms: Engine knock, oil pressure drop, catastrophic failure under full load — tuned cars only
    4,500–9,000 $
  • !! Fuel pump recall 2018/2019 FK8

2018–2019 FK8 fuel pumps with low-density plastic impellers can swell and deform. Engine won't start or dies while driving. Check VIN status with Honda. NHTSA Recall 20V314.

Symptoms: Engine won't start or stalls while driving, P0087 fault code, erratic power under load
    0–0 $
  • !! 3rd/4th gear synchro failure under track use from 80,000 km

FK8/FK2 cars used on track show 3rd and 4th gear failure. Gearbox damage has been documented even at slightly elevated power levels. Honda replaced units under warranty in the US.

Symptoms: Grinding or crunching when engaging 3rd and 4th gear, gearbox locks up or won't select a gear
    1,500–3,000 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

WeaknessCost
Recall: steering gearbox worm gear (NHTSA 24V-744)

Honda recalled 2022-2025 Civic (incl. Type R FL5) for an improperly annealed worm wheel in the steering gearbox, causing excess internal friction and progressively heavier steering. Honda replaces the worm gear spring and regreases — free of charge.

Symptoms: Steering feels stepped rather than smooth on small corrections, increasing effort at the wheel, steering resistance grows over time.

Recall: driver seat frame weld

Early 2023 FL5s had improperly welded driver seat frames. The seat cushion frame can break and fail to restrain the driver in a crash. Honda replaces the complete front driver seat cushion frame assembly free of charge.

Symptoms: No driving symptoms — safety recall only. On breakage: unusual creaking or movement in driver seat cushion.
