The BMW 1 Series F70 has been on the market since autumn 2024 as a reworked generation of the compact model, presenting a noticeably more modern look inside and out than its predecessor, the F40, including the new curved display and iDrive 9. The engine lineup ranges from the frugal three-cylinder base petrol 116, through the mild-hybrid 120 and 120d variants, to the all-wheel-drive 123 xDrive and the sporty range-topping M135 xDrive. One notable change: the previous four-cylinder base petrol engine has been replaced by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder, which in the more powerful 120 version is supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, making it respond more spontaneously than its displacement alone would suggest. For high-mileage drivers, the 118d and 120d diesel variants are the obvious choice, while the 123 xDrive with all-wheel drive and decent power offers an interesting middle ground for everyday fun without M-car pretensions. When buying used, the recall history is worth checking: BMW briefly halted deliveries in October 2025 because a batch of roughly 2,300 vehicles in Germany may have had defectively produced front seatbelts, which could compromise the restraint function in an accident. The affected belts are replaced free of charge at a BMW dealer and completion should be confirmed via the chassis number before purchase. The infotainment system also has room for improvement: the iDrive system can occasionally freeze, for which BMW officially documents a restart procedure using the volume knob. Climate control and seat heating are now operated exclusively via the touchscreen, requiring several menu steps in daily use instead of a single button press. ADAC also critically noted that the M Sport suspension advertised as „adaptive“ is in fact a passive system without electronically adjustable dampers, information BMW has not corrected on its own marketing pages. In the Euro NCAP crash test, the new 1 Series scored only 4 instead of 5 stars due to weaknesses in the small-overlap frontal impact test, while side impact and pedestrian protection performed well. Overall, the 1 Series F70 presents itself as a solid but, in some details, still not fully polished new generation: anyone who finds the recall work documented and can live with touch-only controls gets a modern, everyday-usable compact model with a decent engine choice. Buyers torn between the 116 and the 120 should weigh the price premium against the extra output of the mild-hybrid system, since the difference is noticeable in daily use but modest in fuel consumption. Those who cover a lot of motorway miles benefit from the extra torque of the diesel variants, while the 123 xDrive, thanks to all-wheel drive, offers more confident traction on wet roads than the front-driven petrol versions.

Modular four-cylinder diesel as a direct successor to the N47 — and a significant improvement. The timing chain now sits at the front of the engine (belt side), massively simplifying maintenance and diagnostics. The biggest N47 problem is structurally eliminated. Early examples (2014-2016) still had occasional chain stretch, from 2017 onward this is no longer an issue. The EGR cooler was subject to a BMW recall for potential fire risk — when buying used, always verify the recall was performed. In daily use a very balanced engine: even the base version is sufficient for relaxed driving, the 8-speed automatic pairing (ZF 8HP) is one of the best combinations in the segment. Real-world consumption 5-6 L/100km, documented mileages beyond 300,000 km.
