Ford Capri 1 — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Ford Capri revived in 2024 is not a sports coupe — it's a compact electric SUV coupe built on the same architecture as the Explorer and VW ID.4. Buyers chasing the swagger of the 1969 original will be disappointed; buyers wanting a spacious EV with a sloping coupe roofline get a technically solid package built in Germany. Important context: the Capri is not sold in the United States, so pricing below is European with rough USD conversions for reference.
Three drivetrain levels are available. The base Capri-RWD-125 pairs a 52 kWh battery with 125 kW/170 hp on the rear axle — single-speed reduction gear, no clutch, low maintenance, but noticeably restrained off the line. Above it sits the Capri-RWD-210 with a 77 kWh battery and 210 kW/286 hp, clearly more confident on the move. The range-topping Capri-AWD-250 adds a second motor up front for 79 kWh, 250 kW/340 hp and much better wet-road traction — paid for with lower range from the extra weight. The battery carries an eight-year/160,000 km warranty down to at least 70 percent remaining capacity.
For such a young model, the recall list is unusually long: a loose ground connection can disable driver-assist systems and, worst case, start a fire; underspecified torque on the rear-axle joints can let them work loose; loose bolts threaten brake fluid and steering; and on some cars the front-seat backrest can come loose. Four safety recalls inside the first two model years — get the full recall history from the dealer before buying used. The A/C compressor can also cut out mid-drive via its own overload protection (repair €400–900, roughly $440–990) — heating keeps working, only cooling is lost. DC fast-charging also falls short of the brochure numbers: ADAC's test of the all-wheel-drive version measured around 127 kW average instead of the advertised 185 kW, with real-world range landing at 495 km against a promised 592 km. Interior fit and finish tested as fairly hard-plastic, and without adaptive dampers the Capri leans noticeably in quick direction changes.
Test-drive checklist: Run the A/C for an extended period and watch for it cutting out unexpectedly. Compare the real DC charging curve against the spec sheet at a fast charger. Check the front-seat backrest latch. Ask the dealer for the complete recall history on the specific car.
2026 market: New pricing in Europe starts at €44,950 (≈$49,500) for the 170 hp base car, around €51,950 (≈$57,000) for the 286 hp version, and €55,950 (≈$61,500) for the 340 hp all-wheel-drive flagship. Early used Extended Range cars already trade from roughly €32,000–39,000 (≈$35,000–43,000).
As a 2024 debut, the Capri simply lacks long-term data — inverters, motor bearings and power electronics on the newer drivetrain variants are technically unproven, and the recall cluster in the launch phase is a warning sign worth taking seriously. Anyone buying anyway should insist on a car with all recalls already completed.
Insider pick: Capri Extended Range rear-wheel drive (210 kW) — the best balance of range, price and drivetrain simplicity, without the added failure points of the dual-motor AWD version.

Fun to Drive!Engine Overview
The Ford Capri 1 is available with 3 engine variants — from 170 to 340 hp.
Same basic architecture as the base version, but with noticeably more shove and a punchier throttle response off the line. The larger battery makes for more relaxed long-distance driving but also adds noticeable weight over the rear axle. The inverter and motor cooling have to shed more heat than the base tune under frequent fast charging and spirited driving — there is no solid long-term experience yet beyond factory figures. Otherwise the same benefits of a direct drive without clutch wear or conventional gearbox maintenance apply.
- !! 12V Battery Not Charging Correctly from 20,000 km
Early Ford Capri EV (2024) units show 12V battery faults: the main battery is not correctly charging the 12V auxiliary battery. Workshop visit for 12V battery replacement is necessary.
Symptoms: 12V battery fault message, system error, vehicle responds sluggishly or not at all - !! Electrical System Faults in Early Models from 15,000 km
Early Ford Capri EV units show various electrical faults: cracking noises when systems switch on or off, sensor failures, and cases where the vehicle was no longer diagnosable. Growing pains of a new model.
Symptoms: Electrical cracking/snapping from the body, random fault messages, vehicle unable to start - !! 12V Battery Early Failure from 20,000 km
Early Capri EV models show fault messages in the 12V system; the special battery type was initially poorly available. Software updates address the problem but physical battery replacement remains necessary.
Symptoms: Warning message 'Error in 12V system, please visit workshop', remote functions deactivated, vehicle cannot be unlocked.

A second drive unit on the front axle complements the rear motor and splits torque electronically between both axles. This delivers noticeably better wet-weather traction and stronger pull, but adds complexity through two separate inverters, two cooling circuits, and control software that manages torque distribution in real time. Range and consumption suffer noticeably compared with the rear-wheel-drive-only version due to the extra weight and the second machine. As a new dual-motor combination, there is no independent long-term data yet on the reliability of the front motor, its cooling, or the control software in everyday use.

Permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle with single-speed reduction gearing — no clutch, no multi-gear transmission, which keeps the drivetrain itself largely maintenance-free. The base tune delivers adequate everyday punch but feels noticeably more restrained off the line than the stronger versions of the same unit. Regeneration is adjustable in stages, though a true one-pedal mode is not really part of the calibration. Being a comparatively young motor generation, there is no solid long-term data yet on bearings, inverter cooling, or the durability of the power electronics — early build years are worth watching for software recalls and control-unit updates.

Test Reports
ADAC
ADAC's test criticised mediocre interior build quality, the lack of adaptive dampers, imprecise steering feedback, and fast-charging power plus range that fell noticeably short of the manufacturer's figures.
