Cupra Born 1-FL

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Cupra Born Facelift (from 2024) is the updated version of the MEB electric hatchback — new colours, revised styling and software version ME 3.0, which is intended to address some of the original model's teething issues. The platform is unchanged, and so are the structural weaknesses.

The 12V battery problem continues to be reported on the facelift, though in a reduced form. Software updates have lowered the discharge rate, but the underlying mechanism — too many control units drawing from the 12V battery in standby — is platform-inherent and cannot be fixed by software alone. Facelift owners continue to report dead 12V batteries after extended standstill.

KESSY cold-weather failures are newly documented on the facelift: the keyless entry system (KESSY) fails more frequently below 0°C — door handle sensors don't respond and the car cannot be unlocked. The problem is known from other MQB-evo vehicles with KESSY and appears to be triggered by cold-induced sensor sensitivity.

The infotainment was improved with ME 3.0 but not fundamentally stabilised. Crashes and Cupra Connect disconnections continue to appear in owner communities. After workshop visits, systems may need to be reset.

Brake blending — inconsistent pedal feel from blending regeneration into hydraulic braking — is unchanged. The ZF eBKV remains the weakest link in the braking chain on MEB vehicles.

Range: The 77 kWh variant reaches 220–280 miles in everyday use. With heat pump the winter range remains acceptable — without it drops noticeably.

Test-drive: Query 12V battery state via OBD. Test KESSY at low temperatures if possible. Check brake pedal consistency across the full braking range.

Market: Born FL as a new car from around €35,000. As a used vehicle still very young — barely available below current new car pricing. Those looking for a Born are better served by a well-maintained Born I with the 93S4 recall confirmed as complete.

Updated MEB drivetrain with improved software over the EBJ — the known infotainment crashes occur less frequently but are not fully eliminated. The 12V battery remains the same systemic weakness: left stationary without a wallbox connection, deep discharge is possible; an external 12V trickle charger is advisable with infrequent use. The cooling circuit heat exchanger shows leakage issues on early production units — check coolant level regularly. The VZ dual-motor system with 240 kW and AWD places higher thermal demands; track use should be measured. Overall a more mature system than its predecessor, but installing software updates promptly on MEB powertrains is not a recommendation — it's a requirement.

  • !! MEB Software Issues — Infotainment and OTA Updates

The EDC motor (170 kW Born) shares all known MEB software weaknesses. OTA updates can damage control units. Infotainment crashes and driver assistance failures are frequently documented.

Symptoms: System freezes; navigation won't start; driver assistance off; app connection drops; vehicle won't start after update
    0–1,200 $
  • !! 12V Battery Drain — structural MEB issue from 35,000 km

The 12V auxiliary battery drains due to continuous parasitic draw from dormant control units or a defective charge management system. Faulty charge management during overnight wallbox charging can drain the battery completely.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start; red 12V supply warning; all systems dead; recovery needed despite charged HV battery
    150–600 $
  • !! Heat Exchanger Failure in First Year of Operation from 20,000 km

Heat exchanger failures on the Cupra Born were documented within the first year of operation. The heat exchanger is responsible for conditioning the high-voltage battery — failure threatens range and battery health.

Symptoms: Reduced range; battery thermal management warning; vehicle throttles charging power; workshop cooling system notification
    800–3,000 $

!12V Battery — structural MEB issue persists in the Facelift

The 12V drain issue was reduced in the Born Facelift by an improved software version but not eliminated. New vehicles continue to show discharge scenarios. Improved charge management is available for model year 2024 onwards.

Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after overnight wallbox charging; 12V system fault message; all systems dead after standing for a while
from 30,000 km

!KESSY Door Handles Non-Functional in Cold and Wet

The Born's capacitive door handles reliably fail below 5°C and in wet conditions. Opening and closing via the door handle stops working; the key fob must be used instead. VW is aware of the problem (TPI 2065958/9) and replaces the handles completely in some cases.

Symptoms: Door handle unresponsive in cold; vehicle can only be opened via key fob; keyless system fault message on display; problem occurs even at light frost

Software Bugs — Facelift introduces new infotainment version

The facelift receives new software hardware but continues to share stability issues with the rest of the MEB family. Older Born variants (pre-2024) cannot be updated to the new software base.

Symptoms: Infotainment freezes; Cupra Connect loses connection; driver assistance drops out; OTA updates fail
