The G05 (2018–present) is the most modern X5 on the CLAR platform — lighter, stiffer, technically more refined than the F15. But there are still recalls and typical BMW topics, especially with the optional air suspension.
Engines: The B58B30 in the xDrive40i (250 kW) is one of the best BMW engines full stop — forged crankshaft, barely any documented issues. The B57D30 in the xDrive30d (195 kW) and xDrive40d (250 kW) is the proven six-cylinder diesel. The B47D20 in the xDrive25d is the four-cylinder entry — fundamentally solid. Avoid the N63B44TU3 in the xDrive50i — valve stem seals, turbo cooling circuit, hot-V issues.
Weaknesses: Air suspension (compressor and bags, $1,650–5,500) is the most expensive topic. IBS brake system recall (2022–2024 production) — ABS/DSC can fail, basic braking retained. Free repair, check by VIN. Starter overheating recall with fire risk (2019–2023) — also free. Tailgate: both gas struts and electric motor can fail. Early brake wear with 2.2+ tonnes. Driver assistance systems occasionally miscalibrated.
Test-drive checklist: Watch the car after switching off — does it sag? (air suspension). Brakes for noise and vibration. Click through iDrive 8 (LCI) completely. Open/close tailgate several times. Check recalls by VIN beforehand.

Engine Overview
The BMW X5 G05 is available with 6 engine variants — from 116 to 530 hp.
Modular four-cylinder diesel as a direct successor to the N47 — and a significant improvement. The timing chain now sits at the front of the engine (belt side), massively simplifying maintenance and diagnostics. The biggest N47 problem is structurally eliminated. Early examples (2014-2016) still had occasional chain stretch, from 2017 onward this is no longer an issue. The EGR cooler was subject to a BMW recall for potential fire risk — when buying used, always verify the recall was performed. In daily use a very balanced engine: Depending on variant 116 to 190 hp — even the base version is sufficient for relaxed driving, the 8-speed automatic pairing (ZF 8HP) is one of the best combinations in the segment. Real-world consumption 5-6 L/100km, documented mileages beyond 300,000 km. Weak points remain DPF with pure short-distance driving and typical diesel issues (EGR carbon buildup, injector wear from 160,000 km). Overall a solid, mature diesel — not maintenance-free, but in direct N47 comparison a different league.

Early B47 engines (2014–2016) are prone to premature chain elongation. The tensioner can no longer compensate. Rattling on cold start is the typical warning sign before chain snap and engine damage.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering on cold start; subsides after warm-up; in advanced cases audible during driving; MIL may illuminate - !! EGR cooler leak with fire risk (recall) from 100,000 km
Overheating and leaking EGR coolers can vaporise glycol and trigger self-ignition. BMW recalled affected vehicles. If coolant enters the combustion chamber, hydraulic lock and engine damage are possible.

In Sport+ with the exhaust flap open, a deep bass-heavy V8 growl with turbo whoosh and pops on throttle lift — less theatrical than AMG but more refined. Noticeably sharper than TU/TU2, and the notorious original N63 with its oil issues is light years away. Stage 1 software tune realistically yields 570+ HP on stock turbos. Most reliable N63 variant, but the hot-V architecture demands discipline: short oil change intervals (max 5,000 miles) with 0W-40 are mandatory, always let the engine idle after hard driving. Check starter motor recall (overheating/fire risk) at the dealer.
