Fifth generation BMW electric drive — current-excited synchronous motor without rare earths, high efficiency. Vitesco coolant circuit valves are the most common hardware weakness — a leaking changeover valve disables climate control or fast charging. DC fast charging via CCS occasionally fails completely (CCU defect). Thermal management throttles noticeably during sustained high-speed driving. Multiple recalls address HV software and brake booster (iBoost). Two fire-risk recalls for battery cell manufacturing defects and weld seam issues — have VIN checked at the dealer.

Drivetrain vibrations during acceleration and regeneration are a common theme — front motor brush wear creates carbon dust that triggers drive faults. Heat exchanger valves leak more often than on the single-motor variant (two cooling circuits instead of one). iDrive 8 freezes or restarts after OTA updates.
