The Audi Q9 is Audi's new flagship SUV, positioned above the Q7 and openly aimed at the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS. Built on the new PPC platform (Premium Platform Combustion), shared with the current generation of the A5, A6 and Q5 as well as an upcoming Porsche seven-seater, it measures over 5.3 metres in length and offers seven seats as standard, or six with individual second-row seats as an option. At market launch in November 2026, Germany gets exclusively a 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 220 kW (299 hp) and 630 Nm, supported by the new MHEV-plus technology: a belt-driven starter-generator, a lithium iron phosphate buffer battery, and an additional electrically driven compressor for instant boost without turbo lag. Other European markets may additionally get a weaker 180 kW version. For the US, a 2.9-litre V6 biturbo petrol engine and the SQ9 with a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo (591 hp, 800 Nm) are confirmed — Europe currently gets no petrol engine and no SQ9. For used-car buying advice, one thing matters most for a car that only reaches its first customers in November 2026: there is simply no real-world experience, no workshop statistics, and no known weak points yet — any claim to the contrary would be invented. What can be assessed technically: the MHEV-plus architecture with belt-starter-generator and 48V buffer battery is a new, considerably more complex system than a classic turbodiesel. Older Audi models with 48V starter-generators from roughly 2018 to 2023 had documented failures of this component (recalls/service campaigns in several markets) — but that concerned a different platform and an older generation of the technology, not a direct precursor of the Q9 system. Whether the new MHEV-plus generation is independent of that can only be judged seriously after a few years in service. A serious reliability assessment is only possible one to two years after market launch at the earliest.
