Volvo EX30 1

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

The EX30 (from 2023) is Volvo's smallest electric SUV on Geely's SEA platform — compact, smart-looking, and surprisingly punchy with the ERAD motors (Single Motor 272 hp, Twin Performance 315 kW/428 hp). On paper a bullseye in the cutthroat compact-EV segment. In practice you have to be honest: the EX30 hit the market at launch as a software construction site, and you still feel it today.

The biggest gripe is the radical control logic: there's only one central display, no instrument cluster behind the wheel. Lights, mirrors, climate — everything runs through the touchscreen. When it acts up, you're flying blind. Owners report display reboots, infotainment blackouts, black screens, unresponsive steering-wheel buttons, and cars that temporarily won't charge. Add a speedometer recall (display rarely switching to test mode) and occasional phantom braking from the assistance system. In certain markets there was also the battery fire recall 26V001 (lithium plating, advice to charge to max 70%) — Germany is not affected, as a different cell was fitted here. Everyday annoyances: the heat pump is weak, costing range in winter, and the key card likes to misbehave.

Range honestly: WLTP claims around 476 km for the Single Motor ER (69 kWh pack), AWD 450 km. In reality it's more like 300 km in mixed driving, just 200–220 km on the motorway — consumption sits practically at 19–20 kWh.

Test-drive red flags: check the current software version (1.7.x or newer is a must), click through the display repeatedly, watch for reboots and lag, test the climate control and key card, check the OTA update history. Which version? Early 2024 cars are the problem children — better a young 2026 with Range Mode and matured software that has chewed through the worst bugs.

2026 market price: new from EUR 38,490 (Essential), test-car spec around EUR 58,500; young low-mileage used cars sit below that. Insider pick: Single Motor Extended Range, 2026, with current OTA software — the most sensible EX30, provided you can live with the single-display philosophy.

Engine Overview

The Volvo EX30 1 is available with one engine variant at 272 hp. 1 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.

Elektromotor · Electric· 272–428 PS Engine Change
2023 2026

Rear-wheel-drive single-motor variant of the compact EX30 with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor and a 64 kWh NMC pack (Geely SEA platform, not CMA). Drive hardware and reduction gear have so far been trouble-free — the EX30 is very new and long-term data is still thin. The known problems are software and battery: a global recall for display faults (speedometer showing a test pattern instead of speed) plus a high-voltage battery recall (R10355) for lithium plating and short-circuit risk at high state of charge, with an interim charge limit. There are also software/connectivity glitches and occasional 12 V drain. Verify recall completion and software level.

  • !! Recall: speedometer switches to test mode after engine start

A software fault in all 71,956 EX30s produced at that point caused the speedometer to switch to test mode after engine start. Second software recall since market launch. Fix available via OTA update (version 1.3.1).

Symptoms: Speedometer shows incorrect values after engine start or switches to test display

  • !! Recall 2026: battery fire risk (SM Extended Range)

NHTSA recall (26V001) for over 40,000 EX30 Single Motor Extended Range: battery cells from supplier Shandong Geely Sunwoda can overheat and ignite. Interim solution: limit charge to max. 70%. Battery module replacement free of charge.

Symptoms: No visible warning signs. Smoke development during charging in extreme cases. Charging above 70% blocked.

  • !! 12V auxiliary battery drains during extended standstill

On the SEA platform, many active control units permanently supply standby consumers. After more than 2 weeks parked without a charging connection, the 12V auxiliary battery can fully discharge, leaving the car unable to be unlocked or started.

Symptoms: Car does not respond to key fob, locking system failed, all displays dark after standing time.

2023 2026

Twin-motor all-wheel-drive performance variant of the EX30 with a motor on each axle and the 64 kWh NMC pack (Geely SEA platform). With a front asynchronous plus rear synchronous machine it is the quickest small car in its class; drive hardware has been trouble-free so far, but the model is very new and long-term data is lacking. The documented weak points concern software and battery: a global display recall (speedometer test pattern instead of speed) and the high-voltage battery recall R10355 for lithium plating and short-circuit risk at high state of charge, with an interim charge limit. Plus software/connectivity glitches and occasional 12 V drain. Check recall completion and software level before buying.

  • !! Recall: speedometer switches to test mode after engine start

A software fault in all 71,956 EX30s produced at that point caused the speedometer to switch to test mode after engine start. Second software recall since market launch. Fix available via OTA update (version 1.3.1).

  • !! Recall 2026: battery fire risk (TM Performance)

NHTSA recall (26V001) also affects the EX30 Twin Motor Performance. Battery cells from the SEA platform supplier can overheat and ignite at full charge. Interim solution: limit charging to max. 70% and charge outside garages.

Symptoms: No visible warning signs. Charge limit active. Smoke and heat development in extreme cases.

  • !! 12V auxiliary battery drains during extended standstill

The EX30 Twin Motor also carries the 12V drain risk inherent to the SEA platform during standstill periods. Many active control units draw standby current continuously at rest. After more than 2 weeks without a charging connection the car may be unusable.

Symptoms: Car not ready to start after standing time, locking system unresponsive, all systems failed.

Recall 26V001: HV battery fire risk

Recall R10355/26V001 for certain Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance cars: a cell production fault can cause lithium plating, an internal short and fire at high state of charge. Charge to 70 percent only and park outdoors until repaired.

Symptoms: No driver warning; check affected VINs via NHTSA, dealer module replacement and monitoring software.

!Speedometer recall: display boots into test mode

Software recall for all 71,956 EX30s: at startup the central display can enter test mode, hiding the speed readout. As the EX30 has no separate instrument cluster, the speedometer is then gone entirely. Fixed via OTA update.

Symptoms: Speed readout missing after startup, display shows test pattern or diagnostic data instead of the speedometer.
