Two engine eras: The 1KD-FTV 3.0L (2009–2015) carries the same Denso injector risk from the J120 (€1,500–1,800 each). The 1GD-FTV 2.8L (from 2015) is cleaner but EGR valve clogs at 80–100k km (€300–800). Both diesels have DPF — the J150 hates urban driving.
ABS pressure sensor (C1452) is a J150 trap — simulates warped discs, actual cause is hydraulic. Full unit ~€3,500. Frame rust on 2009–2015 in salt regions.

Engine Overview
The Toyota Land Cruiser J150 is available with 3 engine variants — from 163 to 330 hp.
Successor to the 1KD-FTV with improved efficiency and more power. Timing chain, common-rail with piezo injectors. Proven in the Land Cruiser and Hilux worldwide. Very robust and long-lived.
- !! Camshaft lobe manufacturing defect from 120,000 km
The inlet and exhaust camshafts on the 1GD-FTV (Hilux, Fortuner, Prado up to 2020) wear excessively on the cam lobes due to a manufacturing defect. Toyota documented the fault in TSB 00162T-TME and supplied revised replacement parts.
Symptoms: Ticking from the cylinder head, power loss, increased fuel consumption - !! EGR cooler leaking — coolant into oil from 140,000 km
Internal EGR cooler leaks have been documented on the 1GD-FTV Prado and Hilux. Toyota Australia issued TSBs and provided goodwill coverage. Vehicles lose coolant internally with no visible external leak.

Basic maintenance (oil, coolant) is enough for extreme longevity.

Head gasket failure has been documented on 1GR-FE engines with over 200,000–250,000 km. Vehicles that suffered overheating due to water pump failure are particularly at risk.
Symptoms: White smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss, oil-coolant emulsion under the oil cap, power loss, hard starting - !! Thin cylinder liners cannot be bored out from 300,000 km
The 1GR-FE has cast-in, very thin cylinder liners that cannot be bored out if the cylinder walls are damaged. A damaged engine block requires a complete block replacement.
Symptoms: Knocking, pressure loss in the affected cylinder, oil consumption from damaged bore surface, measurably lower compression - !! Water pump fails prematurely at 65,000–80,000 km from 70,000 km
The water pump on the 1GR-FE has a relatively short service life of around 65,000–80,000 km. Early VVT-i versions (2003–2009) are particularly affected. Failure can lead to overheating and head gasket damage.
