Toyota C-HR AX50
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The C-HR AX50 (2024–present) is hybrid-only — the 1.2T is gone. Choose between 2.0L self-charging hybrid and 2.0L PHEV (up to 223 hp).
Too new for long-term data. Known early issues: multimedia recall (ZGG61, full reprogramming). 12V battery drain carries over from AX10 (45 Ah too small for telematics). Brake disc rust from regenerative braking. EPB sporadic fault codes.
Rear visibility unchanged (coupé design). No catastrophic failures reported yet.
2026 market: From ~€32,000 new. Used examples rare. Promising start.
Generations
Engine Overview
The Toyota C-HR AX50 is available with 2 engine variants — from 150 to 152 hp.
2.0-litre fifth-generation hybrid drivetrain with high efficiency. Noticeably more powerful than the 1.8 hybrid, yet barely thirstier. Lithium-ion battery, E-CVT, no known weaknesses so far.
- !! EGR Cooler Leak with Coolant Ingress from 80,000 km
The EGR cooler can develop cracks, causing coolant ingress into the combustion chambers. Toyota has published TSBs for affected models. EGR valve sticks from around 100,000 km.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust; coolant loss; sweet exhaust smell - !! EGR Cooler Leaking — Coolant Entering Engine from 100,000 km
The EGR liquid cooler on the M20A-FXS can allow coolant into the combustion chambers through internal leaks. Toyota has issued a TSB (T-SB-0104-21).
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, coolant level dropping without visible external leak, oil turns milky, engine warning light - !! EGR Cooler Cracks — Coolant in Combustion Chamber from 100,000 km
All Dynamic Force engines are susceptible to EGR cooler cracks per TSB EG-00691T-TME. On the M20A-FXS, coolant can enter the combustion chamber and cause hydrolocking, cylinder head damage or piston deformation.
Symptoms: White smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss without visible external leak, engine stumbling, engine damage in severe cases

Plug-in hybrid version of the 2.0 Dynamic Force, exclusive to the second-generation C-HR. Electric range approx. 60 km, system output 164 kW. Still very new on the market.
- !! EGR Cooler Leak (PHEV Variant) from 80,000 km
The PHEV variant of the M20A-FXS shares the well-known EGR cooler defect of the Dynamic Force engine family. Cracks in the cooler allow coolant to seep into the combustion chambers.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust; coolant loss without external leak; sweet exhaust smell - !! DC-DC Converter Short Circuit in Cold Weather
On 2021/22 PHEV models, a potentially damaged rectifier module in the DC-DC converter has been documented, which can cause short circuits at temperatures below 5°C.
Symptoms: Vehicle does not charge or aborts charging in cold conditions, charging system warning, in worst case a short circuit - !! EGR Cooler Coolant Contamination from 60,000 km
A cracked EGR cooler can direct coolant straight into the combustion chamber. On the PHEV this is particularly critical as overheating can lead to piston damage. Toyota has issued recalls for affected model years.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, sweet smell, dropping coolant level, possible overheating warning.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid high-voltage battery sensitive to heat The hybrid battery of the C-HR AX50 can age prematurely during long periods of inactivity or at high temperatures. Symptoms: Reduced electric range, hybrid system warning indicator. from 150,000 km | High | |
| Infotainment system outdated and sluggish C-HR AX50 owners criticise the infotainment system as outdated. Symptoms: Infotainment freezes or boots incorrectly, Bluetooth disconnects. | Medium | |
| Inaccurate fuel gauge Many C-HR drivers report an inaccurate fuel gauge and range display. The indicated remaining range often does not match the actual fuel level. A widely discussed forum topic with 348 replies. Symptoms: Fuel gauge jumps, shows more range than actually available, takes time to display correctly after refuelling from 40,000 km | Low | |
| 12V starter battery drain The standard 45 Ah starter battery (factory: Mutlu) drains too quickly on short runs and after extended parking due to permanent consumers (telematics, alarm, GPS). Well documented on chr-forum.de with multiple breakdowns reported. Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after a few days of sitting, key fob unresponsive; warning message on display from 40,000 km | Low |
