Subaru STI GR
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The GR STI (2008-2014) is the grown-up, more livable version of the rally Subaru: first only as a five-door hatchback (2008-2014), then a sedan as well from 2011. Under the hood remains the EJ257 (2.5T) with DCCD all-wheel drive and Brembo brakes — the STI's core genes are unchanged, the car is just tuned more maturely. Here too the EJ257 ringland failure is the big engine topic, the same mechanism as the GD: tuned cars with no data logs are a bottom-end risk, healthy stock engines with clean maintenance last a long time. Buyers look for records, logs, and an honest cold start without rattle or blue smoke. The safety item is the WQK-47 brake-line recall: in salty regions the brake lines corrode through a gap in the tank protector — confirm it's done, and on a rusty underbody inspect the lines closely. The Brembo brakes bring the same bolt issue as the GD: seizing caliper bolts make service expensive, so watch for even pad wear and free bolts. Rust at the rear arches stays typical, strut top mounts wear (clunk on steering), and the power steering tends to leak — damp spots at the pump and lines plus fading assist are warning signs. US cars add the Takata airbag recall, which must be done. On price, the GR STI sits in the mid-to-upper five-figure dollar range for clean sedans depending on condition and market, the early hatch often a bit below and especially loved by some enthusiasts for its practicality. In Europe it's present as a grey import. Insider pick: a tidy, stock or mildly modified GR STI with WQK-47 done, free Brembo bolts, a leak-free power steering, a rust-free underbody, and data logs if tuned. On the test drive: check the cold start for rattle/smoke, test the DCCD, check the steering for even assist and leak traces, tap the rear arch and calipers, and pull the recall status by VIN. The GR STI is the sensible classic of the STI line: less raw than the GD but with the same heart — a fast, livable all-wheel-drive sedan/hatch you can also drive every day without losing the fascination.

Engine Overview
The Subaru STI GR is available with one engine variant at 301 hp.
The 2.5-litre turbo boxer is the heart of the sharpest all-wheel-drive generation and delivers what the brand is famous for: brutal torque from low down and that unmistakable unevenly pulsing boxer sound — the famous rumble comes from the unequal-length headers. Power builds full and linear, and from around 3,000 rpm the turbo shoves hard. Technically the engine is a double-edged sword. Stock, driven sensibly and fed only the highest octane, it holds up reliably. Its Achilles heel is the piston ringland at the rear cylinder: the cast factory piston tolerates no detonation. Run low octane, add power without a clean tune, or thrash it hot, and you risk a sudden ringland failure and with it engine death. The centrally mounted knock sensor detects rear-cylinder knock with a delay — exactly where the weak spot lies. Add the brazed oil pickup that can crack and the rod bearings sensitive to oil starvation. Understand the engine — keep the oil immaculate, build the block with forged pistons before adding power, upgrade the oil pickup and pan — and you get an intensely characterful, durable unit.
- !! Ringland failure — the infamous cliché from 100,000 km
THE EJ257 topic: stock cast iron pistons crack under detonation. 93 octane mandatory, no aggressive tuning without forged internals. Stronger pistons from 2019, but no fundamental redesign. Reliable to ~350 whp stock.
Symptoms: Misfires at idle after full throttle, blue smoke, rapidly increasing oil consumption, compression loss - !! Rod Bearing Failure — Class Action from 120,000 km
Class action settlement: 2012-2017 WRX/STI with warranty extension to 8 years. Oil starvation from boxer sloshing during aggressive cornering as primary cause.
Symptoms: Knocking from the block, dropping oil pressure, metal shavings in oil filter - !! Oil Pickup Tube Crack from 130,000 km
Brazed joint cracks from vibration — identical across all EJ engines. Aftermarket reinforcements available (IAG). Subaru refuses to issue a recall.
Symptoms: Sudden oil pressure drop without warning, engine noise

| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Brake line corrosion (Recall WQK-47) Official Subaru recall WQK-47 for 2008-2014 STI: brake lines can perforate from salt water. Free inspection and repair at dealer. Symptoms: Soft or spongy brake pedal, longer stopping distance, visible corrosion on brake lines from 80,000 km | Medium | |
| Brembo caliper bolts seize Galvanic corrosion between steel bolt and aluminum caliper. On the GR STI with 6-piston Brembo front calipers, particularly relevant during brake service or inspections. Symptoms: Bolt won't break free, caliper can't be removed, internal threads strip out from 80,000 km | Medium |
