Porsche GTS
The 2.0L turbo facelift in the Macan from 2019 — revised version of the CYPA predecessor with slightly more power and an improved exhaust system. Technically similar, sonically a touch more refined than the early variant. For the Macan buyer for whom 245 hp suffices and who wants a modern four-cylinder turbo with VAG reliability, this is a good start — but the V6 brings out the full Macan character better.
GTS — the Cayenne Porsche drivers buy
The Cayenne GTS is the golden mean of the range: sportier than the S, lighter than the Turbo, with sport exhaust and tauter calibration. The V8 (or biturbo V6 from the 9YA) revs more willingly than in the S, the sport suspension keeps the 2.2-tonner impressively flat. Nothing in this class feels less like an SUV. On twisty country roads superior to the BMW X5 M — less power, more precision.
Engine Weaknesses 8
Alusil cylinder bores in the 3.0L V6 can develop scoring if the engine is not given adequate warm-up time. Engine reconditioning required.
Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, clattering from a cold engine
Identical weakness to the 3.0T S: the plastic Y-hose under the intake plenum bursts due to thermal fatigue. With the GTS's higher sustained loads, this tends to happen earlier.
Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss, overheating, coolant warning light, coolant smell.
The GTS 3.0T V6 shares the timing chain weaknesses with the Macan S: guides and chain can break at high mileage.
Symptoms: Cold-start rattling from the timing chain area, engine warning light P0016/P0017, rough running.
EA839 V6 Turbo: needle bearings in the rocker arms wear out. Needles fall out and cause ticking noises. Affects older build years before 2020.
Symptoms: Ticking noise with a warm engine, CEL with camshaft fault
The AdBlue heater unit can fail. Urea crystallisation blocks lines and the injector. Repeated failures; in extreme cases, the vehicle can spend months in the workshop.
Symptoms: AdBlue warning in cold weather; vehicle will no longer start after the warning.
The GTS 3.0T has no port injection — intake valves are not flushed. Oil vapour from the PCV deposits carbon over time. Walnut blasting every 60,000–80,000 km is worthwhile.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss, increased fuel consumption.
The 3.0T V6 PCV valve wears out and feeds crankcase pressure back into the intake tract. Elevated oil consumption and oil residue in the intake area.
Symptoms: Oil mist in the airbox, elevated oil consumption, slight stumble.
The 3.0T V6 GTS ignition coils fail due to heat. A single failure signals general ageing — replace all six coils at the same time.
Symptoms: Misfires, rough idle, engine warning light, power loss.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Transfer case (PTM) fails due to water ingress into the gear oil. Revised several times, but still documented on 2014-2021 models.
PDK dual-clutch gearbox shudders on pull-away and manoeuvring. Gearbox oil change and software update can help; clutch replacement sometimes needed.
Rear axle subframe develops surface rust after 8-10 years with year-round use. May require replacement of the entire subframe.
A/C refrigerant line splits in the engine bay. Complete refrigerant loss, section of pipe rattles.
Alternator voltage regulator fault or short circuit causes charging problems. Fuse F30 blows repeatedly.
Macan wheel bearings wear prematurely with spirited use and poor roads. Rear axle particularly affected.
Macan brake pads and discs wear faster than on lighter Porsche models due to the high vehicle weight.
When turning to full lock combined with braking, the drivetrain produces an audible crack. Porsche describes it as design-inherent load relief.
