Porsche Boxster 981

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The Boxster 981 marks the pinnacle of the naturally aspirated Boxster — the last generation before the controversial switch to turbo engines. Built between 2012 and 2016, the 981 offers the purest mid-engine driving experience in Porsche's lineup.

The engine range includes the 2.7L flat-six (195 kW) in the base Boxster and the 3.4L (232 kW) in the Boxster S. Both are naturally aspirated boxer engines with the characteristic Porsche sound — flat, raspy, and at high revs emotional in a way the turbo successor can no longer match. The GTS with 243 kW from 3.4 liters is the crown jewel.

Vehicle weaknesses are Porsche-typically manageable: IMS bearing (no longer an issue on the 981!), but coolant lines underneath and the convertible top mechanism are the classic trouble spots. Brake wear increases with spirited use, and the AC shows weakness after 8-10 years.

The 981 Boxster is one of the best sports car values on the used market: mid-engine layout, flat-six naturally aspirated, Porsche quality — at prices that undercut a new Golf GTI. The GTS with manual transmission is tomorrow's sought-after classic.

Engine Overview

The Porsche Boxster 981 is available with 4 engine variants — from 265 to 385 hp.

2.7L · Petrol· 265 PS
2012 2016

The 2.7-litre DFI of the 981 generation is lighter and more efficient than all predecessors — Porsche rebuilt the entire boxer architecture. No IMS, more modern materials, less weight: technically carefree. The sound is quieter than the 987.1 due to DFI injection and new emissions standards — described as "refined, but less emotional". Anyone seeking a tool for the drive gets the most technically sophisticated base engine of the range here. Anyone seeking noise-makers invests in the GTS or the open variant.

  • !! Cylinder bore scoring from 80,000 km

Alusil cylinder bores can score due to faulty injectors or cold-start abuse. Engine can seize completely. Repair costs €10,000–20,000.

Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, cylinder wall scoring visible on borescope
    10,000–20,000 $
  • !! High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure from 120,000 km

DFI high-pressure fuel pump fails and is often on back-order for months. Poor cold start is an early warning sign.

Symptoms: Engine only starts on the third attempt, amber engine warning light, P1024/P1026
    1,200–2,500 $
  • !! Integrated thermostat-water pump unit worn from 90,000 km

The integrated thermostat-water pump module on the MA1 wears out in normal use. Failure causes overheating. Preventive replacement at 90,000 km recommended.

Symptoms: Temperature fluctuations, occasional overheat warning, coolant loss, steam from under the engine cover
    700–1,400 $

The 3.4-litre DFI of the 981 powers the S, GTS and the entry versions of the "more than normal" class. VarioCam Plus on intake and exhaust, direct throttle response, characteristic boxer sound — more muted than the M96 era, but with a sport exhaust on a completely different level. The 981 with this engine is described as "one of the last truly analogue sports cars" — before the 718 generation brought turbo engines. No IMS, no purchase stress, high reliability. The GTS variant is considered the "sweet spot" of this range's entire mid-engine history.

The 3.8-litre is directly derived from the 911 S and transplanted into the mid-engine context of the open variant and the mid-engine coupé in GT4 trim. The result is in a class of its own: a high-revving naturally aspirated engine with a sound described as "goosebump-inducing" — in the open variant directly behind the driver's head even more uncompromising than in the GT4. The engine revs silky-smooth and willingly to the limit and lives off high revs. No IMS, modern DFI block. The combination of 3.8 naturally aspirated, mid-engine position and manual gearbox is described as "the purist Porsche experience par excellence" of its era.

  • !! VVT adjuster sprocket bolt shear under load

Variable valve timing adjuster sprocket bolts can shear under high load. A bolt failure causes bent valves on one bank and total engine damage. Confirmed via NHTSA complaint for 9A1 engine variants.

Symptoms: Sudden engine damage under high load, bent valves on one cylinder bank, check engine light, limp mode
