Stay Away!Engine Overview
The Opel Crossland X X is available with 3 engine variants — from 69 to 136 hp.
Modern PSA/Stellantis four-cylinder with excellent fuel consumption, but structurally undersized camshaft chain (7 mm), subject to a mass recall with warranty extension to 10 years/240,000 km. AdBlue system and EGR prone to faults with short-trip use.
- !! Camshaft chain: premature wear (recall) from 70,000 km
The original 7 mm camshaft chain wears prematurely and can break, causing severe engine damage. Stellantis recalled over 141,700 vehicles in Germany alone. Warranty extended to 10 years/240,000 km.
Symptoms: Unusual knocking or rattling noises from the engine bay, especially on cold start. In the worst case sudden engine failure while driving. - !! AdBlue system: pump, sensor and dosing valve from 60,000 km
The AdBlue dosing valve and the NOx sensor fail regularly. The pump and tank are one assembly and cannot be replaced individually, making repairs expensive.
Symptoms: AdBlue warning light on, engine management light active, elevated AdBlue consumption. Vehicle risks entering limp mode after several warning cycles. - !! DPF blockage in short-trip operation from 80,000 km
The diesel particulate filter blocks with frequent short trips as regeneration temperature is not reached. A recall for approx. 1,100 Grandland X vehicles for defective DPF was carried out.
Symptoms: Heavy power loss, elevated fuel consumption, engine management light, smoke clouds when accelerating. Vehicle enters limp mode.
+ 2 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
PSA PureTech engine with wet timing belt – inherently problematic by design. Stellantis extended warranty to 10 years/175,000 km. Newer vehicles from around 2022 have a timing chain. Check service history and oil change intervals when buying.
- !! Wet timing belt – premature failure from 80,000 km
The timing belt running in engine oil disintegrates prematurely; rubber particles block oil passages, the sump and vacuum pump. Oil pressure drop leads to engine damage. PSA reduced the interval to 100,000 km/6 years. Stellantis extended warranty to 10 years/175,000 km.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noise, hard brake pedal from contaminated vacuum pump, in extreme cases sudden engine shutdown - !! Crankshaft end float – thrust washer worn from 80,000 km
Crankshaft axial play exceeds permissible limits early. PSA does not sell individual parts; with critical wear an engine replacement is necessary. Check thrust washers every 30,000–40,000 km.
Symptoms: Knocking noise when operating the clutch, vibrations, in extreme cases engine damage - !! Oil pump damaged by belt particles from 75,000 km
Rubber particles from the disintegrating timing belt block the oil pump inlet and oil filter. Oil pressure warning light despite adequate oil level. Oil pumps frequently replaced as part of recall actions.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light despite correct oil level, engine noise from oil starvation, oil containing rubber particles
+ 1 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
The PSA/Stellantis 1.2-litre turbopetrol with a wet timing belt is the most problematic engine in the current Opel generation. The belt can disintegrate with the wrong oil specification or overdue maintenance interval and block oil passages – with engine damage risk. Stellantis extended warranty to 10 years/175,000 km. Used purchase only with a complete service history and correct PSA B71 2312 oil specification.
- !! Wet timing belt disintegrates from 70,000 km
The timing belt running in engine oil swells with the wrong oil specification, becomes porous and generates abrasion. Particles block oil passages and oil pump – engine damage from lubricant starvation is the risk.
Symptoms: Oil warning light, engine stuttering, rough running, sometimes no warning before total engine failure. - !! Oil starvation from blocked oil passages from 80,000 km
Timing belt abrasion settles in fine oil passages and the oil pump strainer. Bearings receive insufficient lubrication – bearing damage and engine failure result, often without warning.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noise (knocking), sudden power loss, engine failure. - !! Wet belt degrades in oil – oil contamination from 60,000 km
The EB2DTS PureTech wet belt slowly abrades and contaminates the engine oil with rubber residue. These block oil passages and cause bearing seizure. Stellantis extended warranty to 10 years/175,000 km (service history required).
Symptoms: Black, rapidly degrading oil, oil pressure drop, engine noise from bearing starvation, in extreme cases engine damage at 50,000–80,000 km.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall: timing belt particles block brake booster The 1.2-litre petrol timing belt runs in oil. Poor oil quality causes the belt to fray. Particles block the vacuum pump, the brake booster fails. 26,445 vehicles in Germany affected. Symptoms: Brake pedal suddenly extremely stiff, greatly increased stopping distance, brake system warning light | Low | |
| Oil-bath timing belt: engine damage from belt failure Even after the recall the 1.2 Turbo timing belt remains a design weakness. On short trips, fuel dilutes the oil and damages the belt unnoticed. A break causes piston-valve contact and total engine destruction. Symptoms: Sudden engine failure without warning, loud bang from the engine, vehicle won't start again from 60,000 km | High | |
| Recall: rear axle subframe bolts may break Rear axle subframe mounting bolts to the vehicle floor can break. In the worst case the vehicle loses control over the rear axle. Recall 19-C-040, 503 vehicles in Germany affected. Symptoms: Clunking from the rear axle; in extreme cases the rear axle subframe detaches | Low |
Test Reports
AUTO BILD TÜV-Report
Brand-typical oil loss occurs well above average even from the first MOT. Springs, dampers and brake discs show premature wear. A 2025 recall involved a faulty timing chain design with risk of engine damage.
