Nissan Micra
1.4L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with decent refinement. Solid everyday engine.
88 hp: best Micra K12 engine
The 1.4-litre turns the K12 into a spirited, nimble city car — light, lively, and genuinely fun.
Engine Weaknesses 3
Like the smaller CR engines, the CR14DE in pre-facelift models (up to 2005) is also affected by premature timing chain stretch. Catastrophic engine failure is at risk if ignored too long. Significantly less common from the 2005 facelift onwards.
Symptoms: Rattling and knocking on cold start, check engine light (P0011/P0340), power loss
CR14DE ignition coils fail at higher mileage causing misfires. Reported multiple times in the Note E11. Aftermarket coils are often adequate. Individual replacement is straightforward.
Symptoms: Engine runs rough, jerks on acceleration, check engine light, increased fuel consumption, misfires under load
Crankshaft seals and valve cover gasket leak with age. Oil loss often only noticeable after 100,000 km. Repair is straightforward and should not be ignored to avoid clutch damage.
Symptoms: Oil drops under the engine, oil smell, dropping oil level, oil traces in bell housing
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Micra K12 suspension is flagged at MOT inspections at an above-average rate. Control arms, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings wear at higher mileage.
The Micra K12 sills rust from the inside due to inadequate factory cavity protection. Visible from around 100,000 km or 10 years. MOT-relevant.
Low beam lights, indicators, and rear lights fail on the K12 at an above-average rate. This is a known weak point and regularly causes MOT failures.
The K12's 5-speed manual gearbox can develop stiff gear engagement, especially second gear. Worn synchro rings are the most common cause at higher mileage.
The Micra K12 blower resistor burns out — the fan only runs on speed 4 or not at all. Cheap part, easy replacement.
The ABS sensor rings in the rear brake drums of the Micra K12 corrode and cannot be removed non-destructively. The complete drum must be replaced — a frequent cost driver.
The K12 interior is made of simple materials that age quickly. Door cards and seat fabric can develop rattle noises.
