Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross GK-FL
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The facelifted Eclipse Cross (GK-FL, from 2021) is the thoroughly reworked face of the coupé-crossover: a longer tail, more conventional rear lights and — the real headline — the new PHEV variant based on Outlander Mk3 tech. Anyone who knows the pre-facelift GK will spot it instantly: Mitsubishi cleared up the biggest criticisms (the split rear window, the missing plug-in) here. Buyer profile: someone after a compact, stylish crossover with a plug-in option and remaining warranty.
The engine: essentially the proven 4B12 (2.4 MIVEC, 138 kW system output) as the PHEV unit — a DOHC NA engine with an open-deck aluminium block, tuned for smoothness rather than revs. The known long-term themes: slight oil consumption with age (sev2), possible chain stretch (sev4), manifold cracks (sev3) and crank seal (sev3). On these young cars those are previews; what matters here is hybrid and electronics health.
PHEV & electronics: this is the main field. Charging faults and reduced EV range (sev3, €100–1500), general PHEV battery range loss (up to €3000) and an FCM emergency-brake-assist software recall (sev4) should all be checked. Add an auxiliary water pump with a faulty control cable (€300–500), infotainment dropouts and, in serious cases, engine stalling/no-start (sev4, up to €900).
Whole car: early A/C compressor failure (sev3, €300–1200) as soon as ~40,000 km stands out, plus premature shock wear (€250–700), variable paint quality and loose trim (up to €500). The CVT (on the non-PHEV drivetrains) can judder and respond late (sev3).
Test drive: run through PHEV charging modes and electric range, demand a battery report. Test the A/C for full cooling (compressor!), clarify FCM recall status, watch for infotainment dropouts and starting behaviour. Check the shocks for early wear.
Market 2026: as a young used car, realistically €18,000–28,000, PHEV at the upper end. Insider pick: a PHEV with the FCM recall done, a healthy battery report and a working A/C — then the GK-FL is the more mature, more usable Eclipse Cross.

Engine Overview
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross GK-FL is available with one engine variant at 98 hp.
Sturdy 2.4-litre four-cylinder with DOHC and MIVEC phasing, engineered for smoothness and longevity rather than sportiness. The aluminium block uses open-deck construction, which at high mileage can encourage slight cylinder ovality and therefore oil consumption. Valve clearance is set via bucket tappets with no hydraulic adjustment, so clearance checks become a maintenance item at higher mileage. The timing chain generally lasts a long time but stretches beyond 150,000 km; the MIVEC solenoid is sensitive to old, thickened oil. With short oil-change intervals and attention to clean variable-timing operation, this engine comfortably reaches 300,000 km.
- !! Timing chain stretches at high mileage from 150,000 km
The 4B12 timing chain tends to stretch above 150,000 km. A broken or jumped chain drive can cause severe engine damage. Regular oil changes are critical for chain longevity.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling or ticking from the engine bay especially on cold start, rough idle, engine management warning light illuminates - !! Crankshaft seal leaking from 80,000 km
Vehicles from 2007–2011 have a known weakness at the crankshaft radial seal, which can be damaged by foreign matter and leads to oil loss. The design was revised from late 2010 onwards.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle near the engine, dropping oil level without visible leak in the upper engine area, oil smell after driving - !! Exhaust manifold cracking from 160,000 km
The cast-iron exhaust manifold is prone to hairline cracks from constant thermal cycling, particularly around the flange and the integrated pre-cat housing. The result is exhaust noise and oxygen-sensor faults.
Symptoms: Ticking or hissing exhaust noise after cold start that fades as the engine warms up, exhaust smell in the engine bay, occasional check-engine light from skewed lambda readings.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall: autonomous emergency braking activates without cause The Forward Collision Mitigation system can misread situations and trigger emergency braking with no obstacle present. This significantly increases the risk of being rear-ended by following traffic. Symptoms: Unexpected hard braking with no visible obstacle, collision warning alert sounding for no reason | Low | |
| Software fault in the stability control A software fault in the Active Stability Control (ASC) can affect additional driver assistance systems. Affected model years: 2016–2018. Fixable via software update, but potentially dangerous if the recall is missed. Symptoms: ASC warning light on, driver assistance systems respond with delay or not at all, unexpected handling behaviour in corners | Low | |
| Recall: autonomous emergency braking FCM software Recall: a software error in the infotainment (A-IVI) leaves the backup-camera image black or frozen; there were also FCM software recalls for faulty emergency-braking triggers. Fixed by software update. | Low |
