Mazda CX-9 TB
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Mazda CX-9 TB (2007–2015) is the first-generation large seven-seat SUV — a comfortable cruiser with Ford V6 tech, rare in Europe and mainly found overseas.
Engine choice: CAY1 (3.7 V6, 204 kW) — the only engine: strong and smooth but thirsty. A solid base provided servicing and oil changes are kept up.
Weak points: the AWD system is sensitive to neglected differential oil (PTU and rear axle — expensive failures), the brake booster diaphragm tears (hard pedal, service action), warping brake discs, a short-lived starter battery, underbody rust, automatic shift shudder, fast-wearing third row. In the US there is a ball-joint corrosion recall.
Test-drive checklist: Check the AWD differential-oil history (changed? judder in tight turns?), test the brake pedal for sudden hardness, the discs for vibration, confirm the ball-joint recall.
Market 2026: a 3.7 V6 at 160,000 km runs $7,000–11,000. Insider pick: a CAY1 (3.7 V6) with documented transfer-case and differential oil changes — then a comfortable, strong family cruiser; without that servicing, walk away.

Engine Overview
The Mazda CX-9 TB is available with one engine variant at 277 hp.
The 3.7 V6 (CAY1) is a strong Ford Cyclone naturally aspirated engine with a notorious Achilles heel: the internal, engine-driven water pump. If its bearing fails, coolant gets into the engine oil — lubrication collapses and, in the worst case, the engine dies, often without warning (the temperature gauge stays normal). A class action and very high repair costs (the pump alone around $2,000, an engine swap into five figures) make this the central buying criterion: check the oil condition and coolant level meticulously. Add ignition-coil failures. The power transfer unit (PTU) is another expensive, heat-related powertrain topic.
- !! Internal Water Pump Failure from 120,000 km
The water pump on the 3.7L V6 sits inside the engine and is driven by the timing chain. Failure lets coolant into the engine oil — rapid engine damage results. Replacement requires 12–15 labour hours.
Symptoms: Milky oil filler cap, rising coolant loss without visible external leak, overheating warning, sweet smell from oil - !! Transfer Case (PTU) Overheats and Fails from 60,000 km
The AWD system's power transfer unit sits too close to the exhaust system and overheats. The factory-filled lifetime gear oil degrades into sludge. Mazda extended the warranty (SSP92).
Symptoms: Burning smell from gear oil, shuddering or juddering on pull-away, fluid seeping behind the engine - !! Ignition Coil Failure from 100,000 km
The individual ignition coils on the 3.7L V6 fail, often due to oil contamination of the spark plug wells from ageing valve cover gaskets. Can affect individual or multiple cylinders.
Symptoms: Surging under load, check engine light with P030X, noticeable power drop, rough engine
Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Brake booster diaphragm tears (hard pedal) The brake booster diaphragm tears near the outer seal due to a manufacturing flaw. Vacuum escapes, the brake assistance partly fails — the pedal goes hard and the stopping distance grows. Mazda extended the warranty via a service action. Symptoms: Hiss from the footwell when braking, a suddenly much harder brake pedal, longer stopping distance, sometimes only intermittent. from 120,000 km | Medium | |
| Warped Front Brake Discs Front brake discs on the CX-9 warp under heavy braking loads. Centrally rusted and warped discs have been found at around 55,000 km. After two resurfacing operations, replacement is due. Symptoms: Brake pedal pulsating when braking, steering wheel vibrating under braking force, brakes feeling uneven from 55,000 km | Low |
