Engine LUK ✖ Stay Away! 9,570–17,820 $

2.4-liter Ecotec with the eAssist mild hybrid system. 115V lithium-ion battery, small motor/generator, minimal real-world fuel savings. The eAssist approach was compromised from day one: bracket fractures, GCM failures, HV battery not under warranty. Repair often costs more than the car is worth.

Fun Factor? Not Really

A mild hybrid from the era mild hybrids should not have existed

The Eco trim promised efficiency and delivered a $4,700 battery replacement, a cracking generator bracket, and a Generator Control Module that fails on its own schedule. Barely better fuel economy than the regular 2.5. A tax write-off on wheels.

Engine Weaknesses 3

!! eAssist generator bracket fractures (part 12649651)

The eAssist generator bracket holding the alternator and A/C compressor cracks at the tensioner mount. Documented failures at 64,000–82,000 mi. ~$1,000 to repair with bracket, tensioner, belt and labor.

Symptoms: Belt chirp, eAssist disabled, battery warning light

880–1,320 $ from 115,000 km
!! eAssist HV battery failure (not under warranty)

The 115V lithium-ion eAssist battery fails past 100k miles. Not covered by the standard hybrid warranty. Replacement ~$4,700 ($3,800 for the part).

Symptoms: eAssist warning, no boost on acceleration, engine runs as a plain 2.4

4,400–5,170 $ from 160,000 km
!! Generator Control Module (GCM) failure

The GCM in the eAssist system fails on its own schedule — no charging, possible stalls. Often together with bracket fracture or HV battery failure.

Symptoms: Battery warning light, engine stall, power loss

880–1,980 $ from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Gearbox 6T40 2nd/6th gear flare

The 6T40 six-speed shows shift shock and flare on 2nd and 6th gears from valve body debris. Typical on 2013 Malibus past 100k miles.

440–3,080 $ from 160,000 km
!! HVAC A/C compressor or condenser failure

2013 Malibus show A/C compressor or condenser failures often within 3 years. A widespread 8th gen issue.

880–1,540 $ from 70,000 km
!! HVAC Evaporator pinhole leak

The evaporator develops pinhole leaks, oil bleed at vent edges, reduced airflow. Labor-intensive repair as the dashboard must be removed.

1,320–2,420 $ from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Passlock sensor no-start

The Passlock security sensor in the ignition switch fails and blocks engine start. Security light on, engine cranks but won't start.

330–550 $ from 150,000 km
! Electronics Stop/start kills main and aux batteries

The auto stop/start system drains main and 12V aux batteries early. Both usually need to be replaced together plus battery sensor calibration.

440–770 $ from 90,000 km
! Interior MyLink infotainment freezes

The 8-inch MyLink infotainment freezes spontaneously, reboots, or goes to a black screen. Software updates sometimes help, otherwise hardware replacement.

0–990 $ from 80,000 km
