Chevrolet Malibu
2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder with 169 hp, port injection. The last bearable base Malibu engine before GM went all-in on turbo and direct injection. Typical 2.4 Ecotec themes: timing chain stretch on stretched oil intervals, PCV diaphragm in the valve cover, mild oil consumption. An honest workhorse without ambition.
The last Malibu that felt domestic
A reasonable family sedan from the era when GM still tried. The 2.4 Ecotec gets the job done but chews timing chain tensioners on long oil intervals. Driven unremarkably, it moves four people in silence. Not a car anyone chose with passion, but not embarrassing either.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The 2.4 LE5 timing chain stretches early on stretched oil change intervals. Cold-start rattle, P0008/P0011/P0016 codes, power loss. Repair $1,300–$2,500, up to $3,400 with bent valves.
Symptoms: Cold start rattle, check engine, power loss
The 2.4 LE5 shows elevated oil consumption past 80k miles from piston ring wear. Part of the GM PIP-5145A bulletin family. Repair usually requires partial teardown.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil consumption over 1 qt per 1,000 mi, oil level drops between changes
Internal PCV diaphragm inside the valve cover tears — oil burn and vacuum leak. Requires complete valve cover replacement.
Symptoms: Rough idle, oil consumption, vacuum codes
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
NHTSA 14V-153: electric power steering can fail suddenly. 438 NHTSA complaints on 2010 MY alone. GM covered 10 years/150,000 mi, out-of-warranty $900–$1,600.
The Passlock security sensor in the ignition switch fails and blocks engine start. Security light on, engine cranks but won't start. Ignition switch replacement fixes it.
The 6T40 six-speed automatic shows shift shock and flare on 2nd and 6th gear from wear and casting debris in the valve body. Valve body rebuild from $400, full rebuild significantly more.
The A/C compressor locks up or makes noise. A standard Malibu theme across all generations. Replacement $800–$1,400.
Sunroof drains clog up, water makes its way into the headliner and trunk. Regular cleaning helps prevent it.
