BMW 5er G60 — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The BMW 5 Series G60 has been on sale since autumn 2023 and brings the business sedan fully up to date: more software, more electrification, fewer physical buttons. The engine range starts with the 520i/520d (both 48-volt mild hybrids) and runs through the plug-in hybrids 530e and 550e xDrive up to the M5 with its 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and 727 PS system output. The straight-six 540d xDrive replaced the 530d xDrive in summer 2024 and brings noticeably more temperament than the four-cylinder diesels. All engines are largely shared with their predecessors (B48, B57, B58) — fundamentally proven technology, though the new 48-volt periphery adds extra failure points. For used buyers, the numerous recalls of the early model years matter most: the electro-hydraulic brake system (IBS) with a Continental control unit can, under a software fault, deactivate brake assist along with ABS and DSC — a recall already carried out on millions of cars worldwide that should be checked for completion on any used example. There is also a wiring-harness recall over cockpit fire risk, a steering-spindle recall (a universal joint that can break), and a recall for the 48-volt starter-generator whose loose connection can, in the worst case, lead to overheating. It is worth checking the service history or running a KBA (German type-approval authority) query on any used car for open recalls. On the software side, the new iDrive 8.5/9 system shows typical teething problems: spontaneous reboots, CarPlay and eSIM connection drops, and occasional bugs after over-the-air updates. On build quality, owners report a noticeable cost-cutting compared with the predecessor — unlit climate sliders, harder plastics on door pockets, and occasional rattling from the steering-wheel airbag. On the 530e and 550e plug-in hybrids, pay attention to the charging port and the extra weight: the added battery noticeably increases brake wear. For a used buy, the 520d or 520d xDrive makes a solid, frugal all-rounder without unnecessary complexity; the 540d xDrive appeals to enthusiasts with genuine straight-six character, provided the higher price is acceptable. On the plug-in hybrids, check the high-voltage battery warranty terms (eight years/160,000 km from the factory) before it expires. Overall, the G60 is technically solid but, as a young model, not yet free of teething troubles — a thorough recall check before buying is essential.

Engine Overview
The BMW 5er G60 is available with 8 engine variants — from 190 to 489 hp.
The B57D30 is BMW's most modern inline-six diesel — modular B architecture, aluminum crankcase, single VGT turbo. Smooth and torquey like no other diesel in its class. The EGR system is the Achilles heel: BMW issued a major recall for EGR cooler fire risk — must verify if completed. AdBlue system can trigger engine start lockout when heater module or NOx sensor fails. Timing chain generally reliable, early failures rare but documented on Gen1 (pre-2018). Turbo oil supply line leaks occasionally — oil smell in cabin is the warning sign.
- !! EGR cooler failure from 120,000 km
EGR cooler can fail and allow coolant into the intake tract. Documented cases of engine damage shortly after EGR cooler replacement.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, white smoke, engine check light, overheating - !! AdBlue/NOx system fault (SCR crystallisation) from 100,000 km
NOx sensors and SCR dosing unit fail after about 100,000 km or through AdBlue crystallisation. Fault code 26F500 is typical. BMW repairs often cost 2,000–4,000 EUR as entire systems are replaced.
Symptoms: MIL with message 'AdBlue system faulty' or 'Emission system fault'; fault code 26F500; engine runs normally but warning persists - !! Timing chain elongation on early models from 130,000 km
Early B57 models (from about 2015/16) show chain elongation with rattling noises on startup. Timing chain replacement requires engine removal. Repair costs comparable to the N57. Significantly rarer from 2018 models.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, especially at low temperatures; subsides after warm-up; in extreme cases engine stumble
+ 5 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
Modular four-cylinder diesel as a direct successor to the N47 — and a significant improvement. The timing chain now sits at the front of the engine (belt side), massively simplifying maintenance and diagnostics. The biggest N47 problem is structurally eliminated. Early examples (2014-2016) still had occasional chain stretch, from 2017 onward this is no longer an issue. The EGR cooler was subject to a BMW recall for potential fire risk — when buying used, always verify the recall was performed. In daily use a very balanced engine: even the base version is sufficient for relaxed driving, the 8-speed automatic pairing (ZF 8HP) is one of the best combinations in the segment. Real-world consumption 5-6 L/100km, documented mileages beyond 300,000 km. Weak points remain DPF with pure short-distance driving and typical diesel issues (EGR carbon buildup, injector wear from 160,000 km). Overall a solid, mature diesel — not maintenance-free, but in direct N47 comparison a different league.
- !! Timing chain elongation on early models (2014–2016) from 120,000 km
Early B47 engines (2014–2016) are prone to premature chain elongation. The tensioner can no longer compensate. Rattling on cold start is the typical warning sign before chain snap and engine damage.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering on cold start; subsides after warm-up; in advanced cases audible during driving; MIL may illuminate - !! EGR cooler leak with fire risk (recall) from 100,000 km
Overheating and leaking EGR coolers can vaporise glycol and trigger self-ignition. BMW recalled affected vehicles. If coolant enters the combustion chamber, hydraulic lock and engine damage are possible.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible leak; whitish smoke from exhaust; rough idle; MIL; limp mode; rarely smoke from engine bay - !! Turbo cascade failure from 130,000 km
Turbocharger develops axial play, blocks oil return and causes cascading damage to rod bearings, crankshaft and EGR cooler. Metal shavings circulate through entire oil system.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling under load, increased oil consumption, blue smoke, rough running

Modular four-cylinder turbo and workhorse of the current BMW lineup. Wide power range from the economical base version up to the punchy top variants. Structurally the best four-cylinder petrol BMW has ever built: timing chain at front, closed oil circuit, Valvetronic variable valve lift. Oil consumption stays under control when BMW-spec oil (LL-01 or LL-17FE+) is used. Typical wear items are the electric water pump (from around 80,000 km) and the high-pressure pump with direct injection. Not an engine to fear — but BMW service intervals are too long; those who care for their B48 change oil every 10,000-12,000 km.
- !! Timing chain guide rail breaks from 60,000 km
Timing chain guide rail can break; chain jump and engine damage follows. More common on early production years and with spirited driving.
Symptoms: Rattling, clattering from the engine, sudden power loss, engine damage - !! Oil filter housing leaking — coolant loss from 60,000 km
Oil filter housing with integrated oil/water heat exchanger leaks. Coolant loss and overheating risk from about 60,000 km.
Symptoms: Coolant level warning, oil puddle under engine, overheating - !! Coolant bleed line at cylinder head breaks from 70,000 km
A plastic bleed line between the cylinder head and expansion tank becomes porous and breaks. Coolant loss follows; the mounting location is difficult to access, so labour costs dominate.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level; coolant warning on the instrument cluster; faint sweet smell; no visible puddle under the car

The B58B30S combines the proven B58 inline-six with an electric motor integrated into the gearbox for a punchy system output. The transition between pure electric and combustion operation is almost imperceptible; the system manages both without a noticeable pause. The B58 itself is BMW-proven, but the hybrid drivetrain brings its own topics: wastegate linkage rattle on cold and warm starts — known B58 trait, BMW repairs on goodwill. The 25 kWh high-voltage battery carries an 8-year/160,000 km warranty — replacement afterwards will be five figures. ABS recall history and battery condition are the two critical checks when buying.
- !! Recall: Integrated braking system — ABS/DSC failure possible
Signal fault in the integrated braking system (Continental MK-C2) can disable ABS and DSC. Physical braking force is retained but no electronic intervention. 371,756 vehicles affected worldwide.
Symptoms: Brake warning in the cockpit. Check Control message. Increased pedal pressure required. ABS and DSC disabled. Take the vehicle to a workshop immediately. - !! Variable Oil Pump Failure from 80,000 km
The B58 variable displacement oil pump uses a thermoplastic pressure-regulating component that can fracture during cold starts. Sudden oil pressure loss risks severe engine damage.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning, drivetrain malfunction alert, engine shutdown on cold start - !! Coolant loss at expansion tank from 50,000 km
On early B58 units the coolant expansion tank seal is unreliable. Slow loss without visible leakage — insidious because it's noticed late.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible leakage. Whitish deposits at hose connections. Occasional coolant smell. In extreme cases engine overheating.

| Recall: HV battery cell contact fault BMW recalled several G60 models from 2023–2024 due to faulty cell contacts in the high-voltage battery. A defect can cause discharge and present a fire risk. Symptoms: High-voltage battery warning, unexpected charging stop, range drops drastically, in extreme cases smell of burning. | Low | |
| PHEV charging unit: early failures reported Related BMW PHEV models such as the X5 50e show CCU (Combined Charging Unit) failures below 2,000 km. Whether the M5 G90 uses identical components and is affected remains unclear — the model is too new for reliable data. Symptoms: Charging not possible, high-voltage system warning, car starts in combustion-only mode despite battery charge. | High | |
| 48V mild hybrid recuperation fails On the G60 occasional messages appear stating that recuperation is not working. After software updates BMW also significantly changed the hybrid drivetrain characteristics, which drew considerable criticism. Symptoms: Message 'Recuperation not available', suddenly stronger braking feel due to absent recuperation, changed pull-away behaviour after update. | Low | |
| iDrive OS 9 software bugs and connectivity issues The new BMW OS 9 operating system in the G60 still has various software bugs: voice control fails, assistant systems falsely deactivate, smartphone pairing is unstable. Symptoms: Voice assistant unresponsive, driver assistance systems trigger warnings without cause, smartphone disconnects, navigation loads slowly. | Low | |
| iDrive 8.5/9 CarPlay and eSIM connection drops Wireless CarPlay disconnects from the system sporadically; eSIM shows connection error on startup. Digital key sometimes cannot be set up. Issue occurs reproducibly for several i5 owners — often every third journey. Symptoms: CarPlay doesn't appear on display or HUD; eSIM reports 'No mobile reception'; restarting the car fixes it temporarily. from 5,000 km | Low |
