Audi 50 TFSI e Avant
EA888 evo3 plug-in hybrid with 185 kW combustion engine and 105 kW electric motor. First generation of the Audi TFSI e plug-in hybrids. Watch for PHEV-specific issues with the high-voltage battery and charging electronics.
THE company car β but no driver's experience
The A6 TFSI e defines the German company car: spacious, quiet, technically complex and tax-efficient. Real-world users drive roughly 45β50% electrically. No driving fun, but that was never the point.
Engine Weaknesses 10
Defective cell modules in the Samsung SDI high-voltage battery can overheat during charging and in extreme cases cause a vehicle fire. Affects Q5 and A6/A7 TFSI e production years 2019β2024. KBA recall 93AD.
Symptoms: Warning message in instrument cluster for high-voltage battery; charging process aborts; vehicle refuses external charging; in rare cases smell of burning.
The S-Tronic hybrid gearbox shows premature failures on some TFSI e models. The PHEV gearboxes were developed under time pressure, leading to maturity issues on early examples.
Symptoms: Shift jerk on pull-away; gearbox shifts hesitantly or stays stuck in gear; gearbox fault message in instrument cluster; complete gearbox failure.
The EA888 evo3 timing chain can elongate excessively from around 100,000β130,000 km with neglected oil maintenance. Rattling on cold start and camshaft fault codes in the ECU are early signs.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start that subsides as engine warms up; engine fault codes P0016/P0017 (camshaft-crankshaft synchronisation); in advanced cases power loss.
The 14 kWh high-voltage battery loses capacity through ageing and thermal stress. After approx. 7 years, remaining capacity of around 70% is expected, reducing electric range to below 30 km.
Symptoms: Reduced electric range compared to new; charging time increases; battery capacity indicator in MMI drops; especially noticeable in winter.
The onboard charger and charge port microswitch are known weak points. Fault messages such as 'Charging cable connected' despite an empty charge port, as well as halved charging power, do occur.
Symptoms: Fault message 'Charging cable connected'; charging only works after multiple attempts; charge process does not start at public chargers.
On PHEV vehicles, the 12V battery is charged via the high-voltage battery. After long electric-only drives with a nearly depleted HV battery, the 12V battery can discharge.
Symptoms: Warning 'Battery low' after motorway drives in hybrid mode; vehicle will not start; 12V battery must be externally charged.
The EA888 water pump tends to leaks or failure at higher mileage. Missing coolant can be drawn by vacuum into other engine systems, causing secondary damage.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops with no visible leak; overheating warning; white steam from engine bay; P0299 fault code.
The EA888 evo3 in the PHEV variant tends to elevated oil consumption at high mileage despite improved piston rings. Direct injection without valve cleaning promotes valve coking.
Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between service appointments; bluish smoke from exhaust under load; oil burn smell; fouled spark plugs.
As a direct injector without port injection, the EA888 evo3 lacks the cleaning effect of fuel wetting on intake valves. Deposits reduce gas flow and impair cold-start behaviour.
Symptoms: Rough idle and cold-start stumbling; power loss in the lower rpm range; increased fuel consumption; misfires stored in ECU.
Since PHEV drivers brake primarily through regeneration, brake discs are rarely mechanically cleaned. Especially in winter with road salt, rear brake discs can corrode heavily.
Symptoms: Brake discs visibly heavily rusted; grinding noises when braking infrequently; MOT advisory for corroded brake discs.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Contamination of the bonding surface during manufacture can cause the rear panoramic roof module to detach. Affects A6 models produced in 2018.
On the A6 Avant (MY 2018), the rear glass panel of the panoramic roof was incorrectly bonded. Audi recalled 1,435 vehicles in Germany. Creaking/scraping noises and water ingress are further known issues with the panoramic roof.
Stress corrosion cracking can cause excessive play between the control arm and wheel carrier on the A6 C8 (MY 2019β2021), impairing driving stability. Recall by KBA (action 42L1), free repair at dealer.
High-voltage battery cell modules on A6, A7, Q5 PHEV models can overheat during charging (KBA 15722R / code 93AD). 53,449 vehicles worldwide, 17,012 in Germany affected (production period 08/2019β08/2024). Software update takes approx. 60 minutes.
The MMI infotainment system stands out for frozen displays, unexpected reboots and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto failures. Software updates only partially resolve the problem.
On some A6 C8s, water enters through a leaking wheel arch liner, causing musty smells and moisture in the footwell or boot.
